Google Webmaster Tools - International SEO Geo-Targeting site with Worldwide rankings
-
I have a client who already has rankings in the US & internationally.
The site is broken down like this:
- url.com (main site with USA & International Rankings)
- url.com/de
- url.com/de-english
- url.com/ng
- url.com/au
- url.com/ch
- url.com/ch-french
- url.com/etc
Each folder has it's own sitmap & relative content for it's respective country.
I am reading in google webmaster tools > site config > settings, the option under 'Learn More': "If you don't want your site associated with any location, select Unlisted."
- If I want to keep my client's international rankings the way it currently is on url.com, do NOT geo target to United States?
- So I select unlisted, right?
- Would I use geo targeting on the url.com/de, url.com/de-english, url.com/ng, url.com/au and so on?
-
Very interesting answers. Thanks to all of you!
-
I agree, trying to target many locals may stuff you up.
-
I agree. Let Google decide unless you need to target a specific country.
-
My tip here is to use this geotarget feature only, and if only, you want to target ONE specific country. Otherwise, let Google decide.
-
Here is where the traffic comes from.
-
60% of the quotes come from people in the United States
-
40% of the quotes come from people in their own country, not usa.
It sounds as 'if' I GEO target url.com to US (this has the rankings), my international keywords will disappear because I am telling google that url.com is only in the US. 40% of my traffic would go away by geo targeting URL.com to the US. I see that you said URL.com/us, but then I would have duplicate content. Url.com would equal url.com/us, unless I rewrote everything. I think url.com will go as unlisted. "If" I create url.com/us with original content, then I will be competing for the same keywords.

I would set your GEO to USA as international is fairly untargeted and much of the people that typically use Google.com are US users, any of countries would typicallly use the local GEO domains.
You can set url.com and all the subdirectory locations seperately, i would consider setting url.com/US as a GEO of focused directory and then you can leave url.com as untargeted.

Multiregional / Multilingual SEO - What do you do when there is no equivalent page?
Hello, We're building out a small number of pages for the US in a sub-folder .com/us. The idea is to show US specific pages to users in that location. However, we also have a number of pages which we will not be creating for the US as they're not relevant. I am planning on geo-targeting the US folder to instruct the search engines that this subfolder should appear in the US SERPS but since it isn't an exact science, there is a chance that US visitors may land on these non-us pages which could potentially give them a bad user experience. What should we do in instances where a US user lands on a non-us page with no equivalent page? Any help would be much appreciated!

International Market
Hello Moz friends, I am new to the tool and I was wondering if anybody has a best practice for international markets. I used to work with a different tool before and handling international markets has definitely been a challenge for it. What is the best way to set up campaigns/ keyword lists? By country? By topic? How helpful is the keyword explorer and reporting for international markets? I really appreciate your help.

Splitting a site into 2 international sites
Hi all, I have a client that currently has a .com domain that ranks in both the US and the UK for various search terms. They have identified a need to provide different information for UK and US visitors which will require 2 versions of all pages. If we set up a .co.uk domain and keep the .com obviously that will be a brand new UK site which will have zero rankings. Any suggestions as to the best way to introduce this second version of the content without losing UK rankings? Thanks

Suggestion for Baidu Keyword Rank Tracking Software?
Does anyone have a suggestion for the best keyword rank tracking software in Baidu? The keywords would be in Chinese. We currently already have keyword rank tracking software for Google/Bing/Yahoo so we just need to expand to Baidu. I am looking forward to comparing my research with what the Moz community has to say! Thanks!

Hello, I would like to know if there are certain factors that determine SEO difficulty between different languages or countries. Is doing SEO more difficult in Japan than in the United States? What would be some factors that could help determine the above? Thanks in advance,

Does publishing your physical company address increase your Google Trust?
The question is in the title: Does publishing your physical company address increase your Google Trust? I.e. on the contact page of the website, providing a physical address. The address would match the WHOIS entry for the domain, and allow customers to contact you via post.
