Should we stream videos from a subdomain or subfolder?
-
This is causing some hand-wrangling and I need some help.
Let's say we were developing rich video content for our products and our agency is hosting the content on a new external server. There are already plans to link to these videos from product detail pages, category pages, and landing pages on our main website: www.example.com.
Would it be better to create a new subdomain or to use a subfolder with a reverse proxy technique for this video content? It's not truly a microsite and will not have a gallery page to navigate the various videos.
For example, would it be better to use this: video.example.com/
...or this (executed with a reverse proxy www.example.com/video/
Of course, regardless of whether this new content will live on a subdomain or within a subfolder, we plan on creating a video Sitemap using guidance from Justin Hammack in this terrific post.

Thanks, Phil! I really appreciate your insights.

Cool.
To be honest, it really doesn't matter a great deal. i would be inclined to go down the subdomain route - just because it makes it easier if you want to shift things up and move them to another domain later on, but that's entirely personal preference.
Often video files are hosted on totally different domains, such as when you're using a 3rd party player and hosting solution and it doesn't seem to make any difference with regards to getting good video results.

Totally correct.

Hey Ryan,
I'm just want to be clear that i understand what you're planning here. Are you going to embed the videos on product pages across the site, but are wondering whether the actual video files (the .mov/.mp4 files) should be held on a subdomain or subfolder?
Thanks,
Phil

I believe it doesn't matter as the only concern is speed and it has nothing to do with SEO.

Our subdomain hosts content that can not be optimized (static videos) - should I de-index it?
We host static tours on a subdomain that points to the video tour host. I can not add meta or optimize any of these video pages and there are thousands. Should I de-index the entire subdomain? I am seeing errors for no meta, dup content etc in MOZ reporting. If yes, do I add the Disallow: /subdomain.root.nl/ to the primary domain's website/CMS or in DNS records ? Our web company is saying the no follow needs to be added in DNS but I feel like it should be added to the robots.txt file if SERP's are going to acknowledge the sub is no longer to be crawled and the primary is no longer to be penalized. Thank you so much in advance!

Should I use the Change of Address in Search Console when moving subdomains to subfolders?
We have several subdomains for various markets for our business. We are in the process of moving those subdomains to subfolders on the main site. Example: boston.example.com will become example.com/boston And seattle.example.com will become example.com/seattle and so on. It's not truly a change of address, but should I use the change of address tool in GSC for all of these subdomains moving?

Embedding Video for SEO? YouTube, Vimeo, or Wistia?
I believe Vimeo has the advantages of being able to embed your video on your website without advertising and the ability to brand the player with your company name. Can't do that with YouTube. However obviously Google give a bit more weight to YouTube videos in search results. But I'm talking about ranking the website, not the video. If the objective is to provide the biggest boost to the website's ranking (not the individual video), is it best to embed the YouTube video or can you post the video on both YouTube, Vimeo, and Wistia and embed the Vimeo or Wistia video? My gut feeling is that Google would see the direct linkage between the video on YouTube and the website it's embedded on and potentially that would have (albeit probably small) more benefit in the website's ranking than embedding the Vimeo or Wistia video? HOWEVER, re the SEO claims on this Wistia page true? Would the best strategy be to use Wistia for embedding and then also post the videos on a YouTube channel for maximum exposure? From Wistia: _Vimeo, like YouTube, is a powerful domain for SEO, but when you host your videos on these platforms, you are not doing your website's SEO a favor. When you upload your video to Vimeo or YouTube, the search engines are indexing the original url, not your website's. In contrast, when you embed a Wistia video on your website, your website gains all of the SEO benefits. Vimeo videos are ranked to drive traffic to Vimeo to keep users on their platform. Wistia videos drive traffic to your website—not ours._

Please share best practices for subfolders and paths in a domain name
I am seeking feedback on the best way to proceed with regards to a project I am working on. Say for example the domain was domain.com and this site wanted to target specific markets such as realtors, attorneys, churches, and restaurants. Which URL structure would be better? domain.com/industries/attorneys or domain.com/attorneys Can I get your feedback along with any supporting articles. This is for a large ecommerce site but these particular pages are solely going to be used for marketing purposes to bring those site visitors to the website to let them know we understand their needs. Thanks for your help> Malcom

Subdomain or folder for a section not focused on my core business
Hello there, I'm installing your analytics tool and it seems really great. I'm gonna use it for sure but I've a question that is more strategic and it's something the tool can't help me with 😛 I've a website active from 2008 and really well known in my country as a service website... we're like your "advisor" for utilities and insurances. The reason why is "savings" but really focused on utilities (broadband, gas, electricity) and check accounts or insurances. I’ve always used folders in my URLs instead of subdomains (for example www.site.com/section1 or www.site.com/section2 ). In this period I’m planning to open a new website section related to saving but not really close with what we really do in the rest of the website. This section is about coupons, vouchers and little offers. The problem is that with that section I’m going to write really a lot (a lot) of content trying to gain a lot of external links. It’s obvious that I already have a lot of contents about my core business and I’m going to write contents for original categories too. This section is anyway secondary for my business and my worry is that Google can identify me in the future as a website mainly focused on this new product. I’m really well indexed so I don’t want this decision to have any effect on my original situation. Finally the question 😛 Is it better to maintain for this section the same website structure with folders or indentify it as a subdomain to remark that it’s going to be like a totally different site with his dedicated news and all the rest? That’s why I’m evaluating a subdomain but I’m not really convinced cause subdomains can be considered as a different approach compared to original structure and of course using folder can be useful to gain root’s site rank. On the other hand, what can Google think about my core business? Thanks a lot for your help

Follow or nofollow to subdomain
Hi, I run a hotel booking site and the booking engine is setup on a subdomain.

The subdomain is disabled from being indexed in robots.txt Should the links from the main domain have a nofollow to the subdomain? What are you thoughts? Thanks!0 -
Flat vs. subdomain web structure
I am building a site which sells a product in 50 states and in each state we will have independt partners. From an SEO perspective, what are the tradeoffs in using a single domain vs. having each state a subdomain? Each state also has varying regulatory issues that are specific to that state.

Robots.txt disallow subdomain
Hi all, I have a development subdomain, which gets copied to the live domain. Because I don't want this dev domain to get crawled, I'd like to implement a robots.txt for this domain only. The problem is that I don't want this robots.txt to disallow the live domain. Is there a way to create a robots.txt for this development subdomain only? Thanks in advance!
