      Hello -

I'm working on a website selling fashion accessories.  The site just went through a site migration from Yahoo! to Big Commerce.  Now we have a high level of warnings and errors from the crawl.  Few are mentioning sites I never seen before on the Yahoo! platform. I also notice that the pages crawled has doubled.  How can I fix or did I do something wrong with migration?

I was running the website with minimal errors and now overwhelmed with errors all the error updates.  If I can get some assistance on what could be wrong, I would greatly appreciate.

      Thanks.

Well, I myself can't tell you why those pages would have errors - I don't know your site to know what is right/wrong or what your folder structure needs to be to ensure the path is correct. Or, as things that have happened to me, for example, in Google Webmaster tools, I'll get notification for 404's to my site pages...even though those pages don't exist. What do I mean? I mean someone linked to my site, but messed up the URL so they (unintentionally) created a bad URL that Google associated with my site. So when you say you have a high amount of errors/warnings, I'd just suggest looking at what  tool is providing that information to determine how credible that is.

As for those URLs you shared, are all those legit pages but aren't rendering correctly? Or, are they not real pages at all but somehow the URL was created in the move? (Someone else may be better at chiming in there other than myself.)

I suggest going back and redirecting all the bad pages to a good page, or serve up your 404 page for any bad links you want to fall out.

Even with errors, sites can do better with traffic if the migration means that the site is more crawlable and that along with the migration, if it's easier for search engines to figure out what your site is about and match it to search queries.

Thanks much Andrea, I'm so very new to SEO and all the errors freaking me out!

Yes the migration changed the URL structure.  I thought I went through them very carefully to make sure each URL matched (not sure why not all of the URL successfully submitted with matched URLs).

I also upload all the previous redirects via Yahoo onto the new platform.

I updated the new sitemap to the search engines (Google, Yahoo)

For example, the below links showing as errors and can't figure as too why.  I updated the sitemap:

          http://www.shopchameleon.com/a-black-mesh-bow-belt/index.html

          http://www.shopchameleon.com/a-black-mesh-bow-belt/privacypolicy.html

          http://www.shopchameleon.com/ballerina-cool-earring/testimonials.html

But also strange that when migrated and w/ all these errors the website is getting double amount of traffic??

Wondering if you can give a bit more background -  so did the migration change your URLs/URL structure? If so, what was your link plan to set up redirects from the old URLs to the new ones? Did you update your site map to indicate to the search engines you've migrated? Did you 404 any old content that you weren't moving?

As for your comment "Few are mentioning sites I never seen before on the Yahoo! platform" I'm not sure what you mean - what sites are you referring to? Yours? Sites that were linking to your old site...?

Sitemap error in Webmaster tools - 409 error (conflict)

Hey guys, I'm getting this weird error when I submit my sitemap to Google. It says I'm getting a 409 error in my post-sitemap.xml file (https://cleargear.com/post-sitemap.xml). But when I check it, it looks totally fine. I am using YoastSEO to generate the sitemap.xml file. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this a big deal? If so, Does anyone know how to fix? Thanks EwTswL4

404 Error Pages being picked up as duplicate content

Hi, I recently noticed an increase in duplicate content, but all of the pages are 404 error pages. For instance, Moz site crawl says this page: https://www.allconnect.com/sc-internet/internet.html has 43 duplicates and all the duplicates are also 404 pages (https://www.allconnect.com/Coxstatic.html for instance is a duplicate of this page). Looking for insight on how to fix this issue, do I add an rel=canonical tag to these 60 error pages that points to the original error page? Thanks!

Hundreds of 404 errors are showing up for pages that never existed

For our site, Google is suddenly reporting hundreds of 404 errors, but the pages they are reporting never existed. The links Google shows are clearly spam style,  but the website hasn't been hacked. This happened a few weeks ago, and after a couple days they disappeared from WMT. What's the deal? How big is the problem: 404-errors as result of out of stock products?

We had a discussion about the importance of 404-errors as result of products which are out of stock. Of course this is not good, but what is the leverance in terms of importance: low-medium-high?

How to create site map for large site (ecommerce type) that has 1000's if not 100,000 of pages.

I know this is kind of a newbie question but I am having an amazing amount of trouble creating a sitemap for our site Bestride.com.  We just did a complete redesign (look and feel, functionality, the works) and now I am trying to create a site map.  Most of the generators I have used "break" after reaching some number of pages.  I am at a loss as to how to create the sitemap.  Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Backlinks that we have if they are 404?

Hi All, Backlinks that we have if they are 404? Open site explorer shows 1,000 of links and when I check many are 404 and those are spammy links which we had but now the sites are 404 I am doing a link profile check which is cleaning up all spammy links Should i take any action on them? As open site explorer or Google still shows these links on the searches. Should we mention these URL's in disallow in Google webmaster. Thanks

Increase 404 errors or 301 redirects?

Hi all, I'm working on an e-commerce site that sells products that may only be available for a certain period of time. Eg. A product may only be selling for 1 year and then be permanently out of stock. When a product goes out of stock, the page is removed from the site regardless of any links it may have gotten over time. I am trying to figure out the best way to handle these permanently out of stock pages. At the moment, the site is set up to return a 404 page for each of these products. There are currently 600 (and increasing) instances of this appearing on Google Webmasters. I have read that too many 404 errors may have a negative impact on your site, and so thought I might 301 redirect these URLs to a more appropriate page. However I've also read that too many 301 redirects may have a negative impact on your site. I foresee this to be an issue several years down the road when the site has thousands of expired products which will result in thousands of 404 errors or 301 redirects depending on which route I take. Which would be the better route? Is there a better solution?
