How long does it take for a new website to start showing in the SERP'S
-
I launched my website about 6 weeks ago. It was indexed fairly quickly. But it is not showing up in the Google SERP. I did do the on page SEO and followed the best practise's for my website. I have also been checking webmaster tools and it tells me that there is no errors with my site. I also ran it through the seomoz on page seo analyzer and again no real big issues. According to seomoz I had 1 duplicate content issue with my blog posts, which i corrected.
I understand it takes some time, but any ideas of how much time?
And f.y.i it's a Canadian website. So it should be a lot easier to rank as well.
Could my site be caught in the Google 'sandbox effect' ?
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help Andy. I will give it some more time and work on content.
-
Another point here is 'don't try too hard' - you can actually knock yourself out of the SERPs by doing too much SEO, so just keep the site content fresh, unique and share it everywhere you can.
Also, don't chase highly competitive phrases - start with long tail that you have a chance of ranking for and work back from there.

Thanks, I have read it twice. I did reread that chapter again. I do understand the whole concept of link building and have been doing it. I am not seeing any results. I'm not looking to go from page 4-5 to page 1-2. I'm just trying to find my site in pages 50-100. Something so I can start monitoring.
That's why I was wondering about the 'Sand Box Effect'
-
Thanks Andy
Yes I do have a Google + acct. set up and have linked all my website url's to it. I have Authorship set up as well. And it seems to be showing in webmaster tools.
I am a newbie to seo. I do understand all the standard seo check list things ie: url, title tags,h1 tags, meta description, back linking etc.. The the thing that is really confusing me about this is the 'sandbox effect'. I have had all kinds of 3rd party tools crawl my site and not one of them have indicated any major issues.
I have seen some of my linked In connections out rank my websites keywords. Simply because they are linked to that keyword from my linked In profile. That just doesn't seem right. I can't seem to find any answers. that's why I was wondering about the 'Sand Box effect. Again the Canadian land scape is no were near as competitive to the U.S. I am not looking for page 1,2,3. I looking for something in the top 50-100 just something to start monitoring. There are website that do not even work, not optimized, not even trying to rank for that key word and are simple because google happened to find a snippet with that key word in it. The snippet with that key word was the only time that keyword was used on the entire site. It shouldn't take much to out rank these kinds of sites, but maybe I'm wrong on that.

Please take the time to read Chapter 7. http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo
You need to grow the popularity of your website by building links. Also, you may to buy the MOZCON 2012 video and watch Paddy Moogan's "35 Ways to Get Links" .

Thanks Dana - quite effective and I start all my clients' sites like this now - advantages are what we make of them now

I like this suggestion Andy. Curt, this might be worth a try if you haven't done it already.
Also, have you compared your link profile to your competitor's link profile in Open Site Explorer? You might get some insight there as to how your competitor is buidlng their Page and Domain authority.
How old is your competitor's site? This would also be a factor.
Good luck Curt!
-
If you haven't already done so Curt, setup a Google+ account, setup authorship through your site and G+ and start sharing your content. You can find it is indexed with results much faster
I have had content in the SERPs in a matter of days using this method - days of the 'sandbox' are all but history.

The key words are competitive; however I did say that I was Canadian website trying to rank in Google.CA. I do know it is a lot easier to rank in google.ca than google.com.
For ex. one website has my keyword once on his site. Also to note this site is not optimized period. They are ranking in the 6th position for that key word.
-
Thanks. Like I said there is no crawl issues with my site according to WMT. I have submitted site maps. My site is optimized the content is good. WMT and every 3rd party tool i have tried does not show that I have any issues with my site.
-
Thanks for the Info. yes I am indexed that's not the problem. I have tried several rank checking tools and they don't go deep enough to find my site. That's my frustration My site is good and it is optimized but it is no where to be found in the serp's. I have manually searched the first 30 pages and nothing. In google.ca there are a lot of non-optimized site's ranking for my key word. They have the key word once on there entire site and are ranking 6th position, without even trying to rank for that word.
-
How competitive are the keywords you're targeting? If you're trying to get onto page 1 or 2 for something like "women's shoes," that could take years. On the other hand, if you're targeting something like "cthulhu pajamas," you could end up on page 1 right off the bat.
Remembering that rank is a combination of relevancy and authority. It's pretty easy to make a site that's relevant for a keyword, as long as you know the basics of KW density, title tags, img alt tags, and so on. At that point, Google will try to determine how authoritative, trustworthy, and popular you are. Is anyone linking to your site?
-
It really depends, I've seen pages rank in a matter of days, and others take months. One thing to consider is findability. By earning more (legitimate!) links to your site from reputable sources, it is more likely that Google's Spiders will find your site. I'd also make sure that your not doing anything like blocking search engines through robots.txt, and submitted a sitemap to Google through WMT.
Hope this helps

Have you looked at your site by typing "site:http://www.YourDomainName.com" in the Google search bar?
If you see any results there, it means that you have been indexed. Even for sites experiencing the "sandbox," they are in the SERPs, they just aren't ranking very high.
Have you tried also viewing your site using the tools at http://www.semrush.com? It could be that you are ranking for some terms, but they might be obscure.
Hope this is a bit helpful. New sites can appear overnight, take a couple of days or a couple of weeks to start showing up in SERPs. It's much faster now than it used to be as Google has become much faster. If it's been 6 weeks, I am thinking you are indexed, but maybe just not very high up yet.

Why google is not visiting any website from past 10 days
Hi, I observed why Google is not visiting www.SubhaVastu.com from past 10 days, later I checked thoroughly, not only for my site, google stopped visiting all websites from past 10/12 days. Is Google releasing any new updates to the crawler? Any new system is releasing soon. I am expecting Google updated their crawler by this Sunday night and it may visit as usual to all sites from 12-midnight pacific time. Has anyone observed it, any information regarding on this Google step. Thanks.

Is it bad from an SEO perspective that cached AMP pages are hosted on domains other than the original publisher's?
Hello Moz, I am thinking about starting to utilize AMP for some of my website. I've been researching this AMP situation for the better part of a year and I am still unclear on a few things. What I am primarily concerned with in terms of AMP and SEO is whether or not the original publisher gets credit for the traffic to a cached AMP page that is hosted elsewhere. I can see the possible issues with this from an SEO perspective and I am pretty sure I have read about how SEOs are unhappy about this particular aspect of AMP in other places. On the AMP project FAQ page you can find this, but there is very little explanation: "Do publishers receive credit for the traffic from a measurement perspective?
Algorithm Updates | | Brian_Dowd
Yes, an AMP file is the same as the rest of your site – this space is the publisher’s canvas." So, let's say you have an AMP page on your website example.com:
example.com/amp_document.html And a cached copy is served with a URL format similar to this: https://google.com/amp/example.com/amp_document.html Then how does the original publisher get the credit for the traffic? Is it because there is a canonical tag from the AMP version to the original HTML version? Also, while I am at it, how does an AMP page actually get into Google's AMP Cache (or any other cache)? Does Google crawl the original HTML page, find the AMP version and then just decide to cache it from there? Are there any other issues with this that I should be aware of? Thanks0 -
Whats the best method to tackle website traffic drop?
ON 14th November following a DNS error (which seems to have been a google error as local servers were not effected and it happened to many people everywhere) my traffic started dropping. Within 5 days it was down 50%. In a panic to resolve the situation I thought it was because i was on a shared host and moved to VPS which was a disaster. Ive had server errors since. After desperately looking everywhere for news on the DNS error and whether there as algorithm change etc I decided i should have a look at my site @ www.mutantspace.com and see if there were any internal issues. In Google Webmaster forum a helpful moderator suggested that I do 2 things: 1. Deal with the fact that I had keyword stuffed my <alt tags="">. Basically i run an arts blog so have 8 - 10 images per post and was putting the same text in each one i.e [artists name][artform][name of artwork]. I stupidly didnt realise what i had been doing and have since been deleting my alt tags for every image except one per post. However i have 17,000 images so its going to take a while. </alt> 2. She also linked me to https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/overview/subdomains/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.mutantspace.com%252F and wondered why i had such volatile inbound links. I dont know why. And cant figure it out As far as everything else goes I dont know what I could be doing wrong to deserve penalty - if it is a penalty. I dont back link so all my links are natural (from artists, galleries, art blogs, tumblrs, etc) I dont sell advertising (yet anyway) Having said that ive been told i have too many links on each page (i run a wordpress site and so have categories, etc) so im wondering if i should nofollow my categories? In short im wondering what advice anyone has on doing a systematic shake up of my site. Im currently doing the following: 1. deleting most of the <alt tags="">on my posts. Ive got back as far as 2012 and will keep going til theyre all done.</alt> 2. Redirecting all crawl errors 3. No Following more outbound links and links to social networks 4. Checking all inbound links to see if there is an suspicious domains 5. Sorting out the fact that ive had numerous server errors for the last 2 weeks (would that affect SERPS?) Is there anything else i can do? Should do? much appreciated

Does it impact over ranking of any website if their same content being used some other external sources
Hi Moz & members, I just want to make sure over website www.1st-care.org , does it impact over ranking this website if the same content (of about us or home care services) being used some other external sources or local citations places. Do those published same content create any ranking drop issue with this website's and making its content strengthen week? . As I was on 9th position in Google.com before, now it has slipped to 29th position. WHY? is there content issue or anything else which i am not aware.

Are Some Websites "White Listed"?
I track several niches that I am not in so I am not to biased with my own, and I noticed one site despite its rather mediocre quality, never moves. I have seen other websites rise and fall in rank, a few with pretty good content. He writes reviews, but very obviously never touched the products he reviews. However I see some other sites with real photos, and good advice for making a decision - they will sit on page two or three. I havent done a lot of research other than the size of the sites, and the links, and they are about equal. Sometimes the ranking site is smaller (its about 90 pages in google). The other sites I have seen have more content on one topic as well, which is interesting google opts for his one page "once over" review over something more in depth and authentic. It got me thinking about whether some sites are white listed by google, as in hand picked to rank despite what else is out there. Is this possible?

How did a competitor's brand name get in google's related search list?
When doing a google search for the term "ulster county real estate" the related search list at the bottom of the serp includes 7 obviously related search terms and 1 brand name of a competitor. (see attachment) The competitor doesn't rank for this term organically at all yet he enjoys a link on the first page with those of us that do by being in the related search list? I don't get it. Anyone know how something like this happens? Innhs.png

When Panda's attack...
I have a predicament. The site I manage (www.duhaime.org) has been hit by the Panda update but the system seems fixed against this site’s purpose. I need some advice on what i'm planning and what could be done. First, the issues: Content Length The site is legal reference including dictionary and citation look up. Hundreds (perhaps upwards of 1000) of pages, by virtue of the content, are thin. The acronym C.B.N.S. stands for “Common Bench Reports, New Series” a part of the English reports. There really isn’t too much more to say nor is there much value to the target audience in saying it. Visit Length as a Metric There is chatter claiming Google watches how long a person uses a page to gauge it’s value. Fair enough but, a large number of people that visit this site are looking for one small piece of data. They want the definition of a term or citation then they return to whatever caused the query in the first place. My strategy so far… Noindex some Pages Identify terms and citations that are really small – less than 500 characters – and put a no index tag on them. I will also remove the directory links to the pages and clean the sitemaps. This should remove the obviously troublesome pages. We’ll have to live with the fact these page won’t be found in Google’s index despite their value. Create more click incentives We already started with related terms and now we are looking at diagrams and images. Anything to punch up the content for that ever important second click. Expand Content (of course) The author will focus the next six months on doing his best to extend the content of these short pages. There are images and text to be added in many cases – perhaps 200 pages. Still won't be able to cover them all without heavy cut-n-paste feel. Site Redesign Looking to lighten up the code and boiler plate content shortly. We were working on this anyway. Resulting pages should have less than 15 hard-coded site-wide links and the disclaimer will be loaded with AJAX upon scroll. Ads units will be kept at 3 per page. What do you think? Are the super light pages of the citations and dictionary why site traffic is down 35% this week?
