Best Video Sitemap plugin for wordpress? And do I need both a video sitemap and a normal one?
-
Hi all,
I currently use the Google XML Sitemaps plugin on my wordpress site.
But we've recently began adding (self-hosted) videos that we've been careful to markup with the relevant schema.
However, there's a couple of things I don't understand and am hoping someone could help:
- Do we need a separate video sitemap that either works alongside Google XML Sitemaps or replaces it?
- If we do need a video sitemap, what's the best video site map to get? (we are using the Thesis theme so can't use the Yoast one unfortunately as they don't play nice together...)
Thanks for your help!
Andrew

That wont work as the plugin only works with YouTube videos.

- Do we need a separate video sitemap that either works alongside Google XML Sitemaps or replaces it?
You can integrate the video tags within your normal sitemap - or submit a separate one, whichever is more convenient for you. I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with the Google XML sitemaps plugin, but from what I do know, i don't think it included video tags within the sitemap - so if you wish to continue using this plugin, you'll need to submit a separate video sitemap
2. If we do need a video sitemap, what's the best video site map to get? (we are using the Thesis theme so can't use the Yoast one unfortunately as they don't play nice together...)
Yoast is the only video sitemap generator for Wordpress that is any good IMO - the rest don't work properly. So, unfortunately if you can't use that - then you'll need to manually create the video sitemaps or use something like this tool i built https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhK1-u_-nIZhdE5KdEFTYVJCN3M4Yk9Xb2pfY0hrQkE&usp=sharing to scale it out in excel.

Thanks Branden - I really like Wistia and if I wasn't going self-hosted for various reasons would definitely choose them.

have you considered a 3rd party video hosting service? Wistia (recommended by SEOmoz) automatically creates a XML Video sitemap for videos hosted with them. And Wistia can capture email to play video & integrate email marketing campaign (if you want), heat maps, call to action link at end of video & CNAME codes, etc. A 3rd party video hosting can also ensure quick playback of videos, and you wont receive any surprise hosting costs from your current website hosing company.
Great blog post about this http://www.seomoz.org/blog/hosting-and-embedding-for-video-seo

You could try this one: Google XML Sitemap for Videos
It seems that it only includes posts that contain (or link to) videos in a file called sitemap-video.xml, so you'll probably need your regular sitemap plugin too to generate a full sitemap.xml file.

thanks but unfortunately yoast confirmed it won't work on a thesis suite

it's not free but yoast SEO have this awesome WP plugin, adds microformats etc - see benefits @ http://yoast.com/wordpress/video-seo/
used it for a client, well worth it- adds something competition don't have for the most part

Does Autoplay video effect SEO?
I'm trying to find out if autoplay videos (muted) on the homepage effect seo in anyway? Currently our site ranks around position four on the first page, but we have noticed one competitor we monitor have long auto playing videos on their sites and were wondering if they are a good or bad factor? Any info you would like to share would be great. Thanks

Updating Youtube Videos: Does this Reset Your Views to 0?
Hello Moz Community, Our team is looking to update a few videos in our Youtube channel but are concerned that doing so will reset the current amount of views to 0 once the change has been made. Would anyone happen to know if this happens or if the views remain the same? Also, how do the updates to the videos affect rank and visibility? Thank you all for your help.

Do I need to use a CNAME for wistia video hosting?
I'm using Wisita for video hosting. My strategy is to allow other sites to embed videos to get links - I want the video linking back to my site not wistia or the embeding site. Do I need to use the Wistia CNAME or is a wistia subdomain acceptable?

What is the best way to include video transcripts on your pages?
I just posted a question as a comment on this blog post (http://www.audiotranscription.org/6-reasons-you-need-to-have-your-sites-videos-transcribed/comment-page-1/#comment-4311) and realized I probably should have asked the question here because it is really SEO-related. We are in the process of transcribing all of our videos. Can you someone recommend how best to post the transcript file on our product pages? For example, here's a product page that has a video review on it: http://www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/product/behringer-x32-digital-mixing-system. Would it be best to post a link to the transcript file or insert the iframe transcript file from DotSub.com (in that case wouldn't DotSub.com be getting credit for our original content?) or, should we just let our captions on the YouTube stream from there (which is what's happening right now)? Will Google still crawl the transcript if the only place it's available is on YouTube? If so, doesn't YouTube get credited for that content, and not our site? Even if we do post a trascript on the page, if it appeared at YouTube first, wouldn't YouTube get credit for the original version? We want credit for that content...just not sure how to get it? I understand that moving to Wistia.com would probably solve most of these issues. What I'm trying to figure out is how best to handle new transcripts for existing videos over at YouTube?

Best tools for checking competitors citations.
I am using whitespark and brightlocal to run citation checks for my clients. I was curious if there was a good tool to compare competitor citations + other local metrics easily without paying per report.

Are multiple embeds of the same video considered content duplication?
We are considering using Wistia to host our “new” video content on our website. Currently we use YouTube and find many people watch our technical videos (Eg. Fitting videos have10k + views, which is very high for our niche industry) We currently have “the same” YouTube videos embedded on several different blog posts on our website, as the video is still relevant to what the post talks about Question: Since Wistia updates our video Robot.Txt file, would multiple embeds of the “same video” be seen as content duplication on google & “be harmful” as a result? Thanks
