Agency footer link, do we keep it ?
-
Hello !
I was wondering if it's still a good idea to let a do-follow link on the bottom of agency released websites.
Because they obvisouly come from different websites with no link with a web marketing agency.
- Do we have to keep them in the footer in no-follow ?
- If we do so, how to get some link juice from the different websites ?
It sounds a bit stupid but one of my partners went from PR7 to PR5 recently. I guess Penguin 2.0 did not like all its links from its customers' website.
Tks a lot !

Mum ... I never really looked this as a problem until the last Google updates.
So if I got it properly:
- Keeping one link on the home may not hurt my website (now)
- Keeping the footer link on all website would be the last thing to do
- Keeping the link in nofollow can bring me some new customers (now) and penalize my site soon
I think I'm going for the nofollow option now.
What do you think ?

Short answers: Don't do it.
Chris did a great job at explaining why as well.
Having said that, if the agency is a highly respected an ethical agency, then you could consider it, but nine out of 10 times, they won't be, so I'd advise removing the links.

There was an interesting discussion related to this sometime back on Google Groups. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/webmasters/pX0sI1KOnTM/60MmAnGN5fsJ
The conclusion I would say is that you can link from the client websites, but make sure you do not stuff keywords in the anchor text. As long as someone is linking with the brand name, it shouldn't have any issues.

While those footer links back to the agency that created the website used to be commonplace and sought after, it's shaky ground today--even just one or two no-followed links from a client's site could get you in trouble--in the future.
Today, a followed link or two from the footer of a client's home page and another one from some an interior page (each link having different, non-exact match anchor text) may still provide your site some advantage--and that's the problem. Using those links to your advantage may help your authority in the present but you shouldn't be surprised if that authority is stripped at some point in the future. You know what it looks like when authority is stripped? A penalty.
If you are still getting a followed footer link or two from each of your clients, that shouldn't be your only means of building authority--it should be a supplemental means. You really need to work just as hard as any other site in any other industry to build editorial links back to your site in order that you not suffer an authority adjustment down the road.
The best practice is to nofollow those links in order to prevent them from giving you problems in the future.

Links to category pages unnatural?
If people are linking to your site, it would seem natural that the vast majority of those links would point to the homepage, product page, or a article/content page. Let's say you have 100 links pointing to your site, and 40 of them are pointing to category pages. Would this seem unnatural? Does Google or other search engines have a way of determining this as a factor in ascertaining whether the links are natural or not? Is there a rule of thumb when it comes to the pages that are linked to on your site?

Has anyone used Capterra and will I get penalized for paid links?
Hello - I'm contemplating buying a directory listing on the software promotion website http://www.capterra.com/ . It's a site that gets quite a bit of traffic for people searching for software products and I was interested in promoting my software product there, but I don't want to ruin our very good standing with Google at this time if Google deems Capterra as selling paid links. I'm not interested in this for links but instead as a good source of referral traffic for my software site. If anyone has used Capterra or has advice on whether Capterra might injure my SERP rankings, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Jeff

Google Site Links question
Are Google site links only ever shown on the top website? Or is it possible for certain queries for the site in position #2 or #3 or something to have site links but the #1 position not have them? If there are any guides, tips or write ups regarding site links and their behavior and optimization please share! Thanks.

Do links from unrelated sites dilute your rankings for your key phrases?
do links from unrelated sites dilute your rankings for your key phrases? i've always heard don't get links from unrelated sites but if that mattered, then how would sites with totally diverse pages such as newspaper sites, sears, and other catalogue sites rank for these diverse subjects on their site? How does Facebook rank when it gets 100,000 links a day from sites that have nothing to do with a social media site? I'd love to hear everyone's opinion on this. Also, Do links from unrelated sites give less push than related links? Take care,

Too Many On-Page Links
After running a site analysis on here it has come up and said that I have a lot o pages with too many on page links and that this might be why the site is being penalized. Thing is I am not sure how to remedy this as one page that says it has 116 links is this one : http://www.whosjack.org/10-films-with-some-crazy-bitches/ Although there is only one link in the body Then again our home page has 165 http://www.whosjack.org which again it says is too many. The thing is is that surely it doesn't count on links all over the page as other wise every news homepage would be penalised? For example what would happen here on this home page? : http://www.dazeddigital.com/ Can anyone help me see what I am missing? Are there possible hidden links anywhere I should be looking for etc? Thanks

Redirected old domain to new, how long before seeing the external links under the new domain?
Before contracting SEO services, my client decided to change his established root domain to one more customer-friendly. Since he had no expertise on board, no redirects were set up until 6 months later. I ran stats right before the old domain was redirected and have a report showing that he had roughly 750 external links from 300 root domains. We redirected the old domain to the new domain in mid Jan 2012. Those external links are still not showing in Open Site Explorer for the new domain. I've tested it a dozen times, and the old domain definitely points to the new domain. How long should it take before the new domain picks up those external links? Should I do anything else to help the process along?
