Google images not showing on SERP
-
Hi,
I recently noticed that after a specific name search, Google images on the 'Web' SERP are no longer showing up. About a month ago, there were atleast 4-5 headshots of this particular person showing up whenever his name was searched. Now no images are showing, just the ten organic links and two links from adwords campaign we have going. The images are still optimized and some are even from editorial sites.
Does anyone know what may have caused the images to disappear and what we can do to bring them back to the main SERP? (Not sure if it matters but we are in Canada)
Thanks

Good Morning!
First off, I would need to know a bit more information before throwing out an exact answer, but from my experience, anytime I'm optimizing a new word/image/video I usually notice it fall in and out of rank on an almost weekly basis. The general trend appears to be upward, but it takes a little bit before the rankings become solid.
As far as other aspects, is the original site that hosts the photo still up? How long ago were the photos put up? Are all the tags correct/optimized to the persons name?
Being in Canada may or may not have an impact, although I highly doubt it, unless this person is a local legend. Google is putting a heavy push on local searches so if you are in mexico looking up a Canadian local municipal legend then I might think yes.
Anyway, hope that helps a little!

Would you recommend changing image file names retroactively?
We'll be optimizing file names moving forward, but it hasn't been done in the past. I have probably 1,500 that would need to be changed, so want to make sure it's a valuable use of time/worth the effort. 🙂 Also, has anyone used Media File Renamer for wordpress? Seems this would be a good way to rename files without needing to reupload everything. Thanks!

Is it a legal requirement for a website to have alt tags for all images?
Someone told me it is a legal requirement for a website to have alt tags on all of their images. Is this right? Or is this bad for SEO?

Moving Images to Subdomain: SEO Impacts
For sever work- load enhancements we are planning to move our images to a sub-domain. so the files would be located at something like images.domain.com Rather than domain.com/images/ We are a large Ecommerce site so we have a lot of images. These will be self hosted so we are not using a CDN. I'm hoping someone has done the same and if there were any steps they had wished they had taken before making the move/ if they noticed any traffic impacts things like that.

Metadata stored in images read by search engines?
Does anyone know if metadata stored in images is read by search engines? My company stores images in digital asset management systems and metadata keyword tags are added to the images, so they can easily be found within the system. Since these keywords are stored in the image file, I was wondering if search engines can read them once the image is placed on the website, but I'm not finding any evidence of this in my research.

Google Places / Map Results CTR vs Top Organic Result
I have a client who is currently ranking close to the top of the Google Places results for a handful of important local keywords. They have a competitor who is pretty consistantly ranking in number #1 and #2 organic positions, above the Places results. Does anyone know the average click through rates for results similar to these? Do the #1 and #2 organic positions still outperform the lower placed Google Places (with side map) results when the search intent is very local? I just wonder if they are possibly in a better position as-is if people are more likely to use the map or places listings on the SERPs page, rather than click through to another site. Thanks 🙂
