Images on their own page?

Hi Mozers,
We have images on their own separate pages that are then pulled onto content pages.
Should the standalone pages be indexable?
On the one hand, it seems good to have an image on it's own page, with it's own title.
On the other hand, it may be better SEO for crawler to find the image on a content page dedicated to that topic.
Unsure.
Would appreciate any guidance!

You need to clarify whether you mean images on their own page, or images on their own URL (two different things)
This is an image on its own page:

Depending upon the nature of the page, you may or may not want to de-index URLs like this. In the example of Bloodstock festival, it would be crazy to de-index their gallery images which many people are explicitly looking for. In other circumstances, you get 'weird' pages which end users are never meant to see. Fragments which have minimal styling and just the image, those can usually be de-indexed. Sometimes an image on a single page is very useful for users (imagine if Pinterest banned all actual pins from the SERPs) but other times they're just back-end fragments which have escaped. Know the difference
This is an image on its own URL:
When you load this up, there's no container. No HTML, no site at all - JUST the image on its own. Don't de-index these, or Google can't see your images - even when they're embedded on a web-page!

It depends on how it is implemented on your website. If it's just a plain page with a title and description, and just the image slammed into the page with no content, then it won't do any good for page or image SEO. Instead, it can even harm your indexability as the pages might consume some of the "crawl budget". You can read more about it in my answer here.
My suggestion would be to link to the images directly. If you want to however keep the image pages, you can set them not to be indexed through the meta no-index tag in the header. Regarding image SEO I would suggest you work more on optimizing the image file name, title and description on the page where you are using it, and keep creating quality links for your website and pages.

We have pages on our shopify site example - https://shop.example.com/collections/cast-aluminum-plaques/products/cast-aluminum-address-plaque That we want to put a rel canonical tag on to direct to our wordpress site page - https://www.example.com/aluminum-plaques/ We have links form the wordpress page to the shop page, and over time ahve found that google has ranked the shop pages over the wp pages, which we do not want. Category Page as Shopping Aggregator Page
Hi, I have been reviewing the info from Google on structured data for products and started to ponder.

You have a Category Page and it lists 8 products, each products shows an image, price and review rating. As the individual products pages are already marked up they display Rich Snippets in the serps.
I wonder how do we get the rich snippets for the category page. Now Google suggest a markup for shopping aggregator pages that lists a single product, along with information about different sellers offering that product but nothing for categories. My ponder is this, Can we use the shopping aggregator markup for category pages to achieve the coveted rich results (from and to price, average reviews)? Keen to hear from anyone who has had any thoughts on the matter or had already tried this.0 -
Null Alt Image Tags vs Missing Alt Image Tags
Hi, Would it be better for organic search to have a null alt image tag programatically added to thousands of images without alt image tags or just leave them as is. The option of adding tailored alt image tags to thousands of images is not possible. Is having sitewide alt image tags really important to organic search overall or what? Location Pages On Website vs Landing pages
We have been having a terrible time in the local search results for 20 + locations. I have Places set up and all, but we decided to create location pages on our sites for each location - brief description and content optimized for our main service. The path would be something like .com/location/example. One option that has came up in question is to create landing pages / "mini websites" that would probably be location-example.url.com. I believe that the latter option, mini sites for each location, would be a bad idea as those kinds of tactics were once spammy in the past. What are are your thoughts and and resources so I can convince my team on the best practice.

Would changing the file name of an image (not the alt attribute) have an effect of on seo / ranking of that image and thus the site?
Would changing the file name of image, not the alt attribute nor the image itself (so it would be exactly the same but just a name change) have any effect on : a) A sites seo ranking b) the individual images seo ranking (although i guess if b) would be true it would have an effect on a) although potentially small.) This is the sort of change i would be thinking of making :  changed to

Should my back links go to home page or internal pages
Right now we rank on page 2 for many KWs, so should i now focus my attention on getting links to my home page to build domain authority or continue to direct links to the internal pages for specific KWs? I am about to write some articles for several good ranking sites and want to know whether to link my company name (same as domain name) or KW to the home page or use individual KWs to the internal pages - I am only allowed one link per article to my site. Can too many "noindex" pages compared to "index" pages be a problem?
Hello, I have a question for you: our website virtualsheetmusic.com includes thousands of product pages, and due to Panda penalties in the past, we have no-indexed most of the product pages hoping in a sort of recovery (not yet seen though!). So, currently we have about 4,000 "index" page compared to about 80,000 "noindex" pages. Now, we plan to add additional 100,000 new product pages from a new publisher to offer our customers more music choice, and these new pages will still be marked as "noindex, follow". At the end of the integration process, we will end up having something like 180,000 "noindex, follow" pages compared to about 4,000 "index, follow" pages. Here is my question: can this huge discrepancy between 180,000 "noindex" pages and 4,000 "index" pages be a problem? Can this kind of scenario have or cause any negative effect on our current natural SEs profile? or is this something that doesn't actually matter? Any thoughts on this issue are very welcome. Image Maps
Hey forum, I'm curious about Image Maps. Few things I'm not sure about: 1. Will the links be followed? If so, will Google respect rel="nofollow"? 2. Will the image be considered 1 image? (indexed as image, etc.) Or will each map segment be treated as a separate image? 3. Any other SEO pros\cons to consider when adding an image map to an existing page? Thanks, Corwin.
