This is more of a technical question than pure SEO per se, but I am guessing that some folks here may have covered this and so I would appreciate any questions.

I am moving from a WordPress.com-based blog (hosted on WordPress) to a WordPress installation on my own server (as suggested by folks in another thread here).

As part of this I want to move from the format blog.<mydomain>.com to www.mydomain.com\blog. I have installed WordPress on my server and have imported posts from the hosted site to my own server.

How should I manage the transition from first format to the second? I have a bunch of links on Facebook, etc that refer to URLs of the blog..com format so it's important that I redirect.</mydomain>

I am running DotNetNuke/WordPress on my own IIS/ASP.Net servers.

      Thanks.

      Mark

Thank you. Yes, that's pretty much the plan I am executing now. Right now I'm struggling to get this working with the URL rewriting module in IIS 7 but I am sure it's possible.

        Thanks again.

Yes, do what Alan is suggesting.

Create the blog.yourdomain.com folder on your own server and then put in 301 redirects from blog.yourdomain.com to your www.yourdomain.com/blog

After the redirects are setup, change your DNS from Wordpress.com to your installation of blog.yourdomain.com.

On Apache servers you just need to create a htaccess file in your blog.yourdomain.com folder, but I don't have any experience with IIS/ASP server.

ah gotcha.  I paused initially reading, and was remiss in getting clarificatni.  So if you have full control, you're in better shape to do it yourself.

Set up the DNS so that blog.yourdomain.com is pointed to your server, then you can implement the server level 301s on that subdomain yourself on that server.

Thank you, Alan. I want to make sure I understand this.

I have full control of my DNS zone entries. I currently link a CNAME record for blog to the <myblog>.wordpress.com. My hope is that I could:</myblog>

              • Update the DNS entry to point to my own server (so, blog.<mydomain>.com would just be directed to that machine)</mydomain>
              • Implement some sort of server-side redirect that translates the old format to the new format.

This way I have no reason to keep WordPress.com in the picture (with the redirection service) - I basically just create new links to www.<mydomain>.com</mydomain> and have all old links redirected as above.

              Would that not work?

              Thanks again.

                Hi Mark

You are going to need to rely on WordPress' own 301 redirect solution.  301 Redirects have to happen on the server where the original content resided (you can't set up a 301 redirect on your own site's server, since  the original files and domain weren't hosted there).

                Here's the official solution http://en.support.wordpress.com/site-redirect/

How do you fix redirect chains and temporary redirects?

Hi, I have a lot of issues popping up with temporary redirects and redirect chains. I'm still confused as to what exactly redirect chains are and I don't know how to find where the "chains" are or how to fix them. I'm having two issues mainly:1. Temporary RedirectsI have around 100 pages on our www.twowayradiosfor.com website that are being flagged as temporary redirects. All of them have one thing in common: they are review pages (basically, when a customer clicks on the Review button to review a certain product, they are redirected to a review page for that product).URL Example:  https://www.twowayradiosfor.com/reviewhelpful.asp?ProductCode=CLS1410-COMBO&ID=44&yes=noI went into our website and set any URL containing the following as noindex:/review.aspWill that fix the issue? If yes, will I also need to do that for any URL containing /reviewhelpful.asp?2. Redirect ChainsIt seems like basically every product page on my website has this issue (over 100 pages). Here's an example of one:https://www.twowayradiosfor.com/Motorola-CLS1110-p/cls1110.htmI don't see any broken links on this page or links that redirect to another page that redirects, etc. What is causing this? Is it something on my header bar that is redirecting (since that header bar appears on every page, maybe that is why this issue shows up on a lot of pages)?I am new to Moz and still trying to figure this stuff out. I really appreciate any help. Thanks, Sawyer

What do you do with product pages that are no longer used ? Delete/redirect to category/404 etc

We have a store with thousands of active items and thousands of sold items. Each product is unique so only one of each. All products are pinned and pushed online ... and then they sell and we have a product page for a sold item. All products are keyword researched and often can rank well for longtail keywords Would you :- 1. delete the page and let it 404 (we will get thousands) 2. See if the page has a decent PA, incoming links and traffic and if so redirect to a RELEVANT category page ? ~(again there will be thousands) 3. Re use the page for another product - for example a sold ruby ring gets replaces with ta new ruby ring and we use that same page /url for the new item. Gemma

                  My homepage redirects to itself?

Hi there - I'm not a SEO so help would be appreciated! Moz is telling me we have a redirect loop but the URLs are the same. https://www.example.com/ to https://www.example.com/ Why is my homepage creating a redirect loop to itself? We use Wordpress and I do not have any redirects listed for our homepage. Could this have something to do with switching to https in April? Thanks, Katherine

Can you have a /sitemap.xml and /sitemap.html on the same site?

Thanks in advance for any responses; we really appreciate the expertise of the SEOmoz community! My question: Since the file extensions are different, can a site have both a /sitemap.xml and /sitemap.html both siting at the root domain? For example, we've already put the html sitemap in place here: https://www.pioneermilitaryloans.com/sitemap Now, we're considering adding an XML sitemap. I know standard practice is to load it at the root (www.example.com/sitemap.xml), but am wondering if this will cause conflicts. I've been unable to find this topic addressed anywhere, or any real-life examples of sites currently doing this. What do you think?

Www vs non-www which is better?

Is it better to have all your pages point to the www version or non www version.

What is the best method to block a sub-domain, e.g. staging.domain.com/ from getting indexed?

Now that Google considers subdomains as part of the TLD I'm a little leery of testing robots.txt with something like: staging.domain.com
                  User-agent: *
Disallow: / in fear it might get the www.domain.com blocked as well. Has anyone had any success using robots.txt to block sub-domains? I know I could add a meta robots tag to the staging.domain.com pages but that would require a lot more work.
