How to find and fix 404 and broken links?
-
Hi, My campaign is showing me many 404 problems and other tools are also showing me broken links, but the links they show me dose work and I cant seem to find the broken links or the cause of the 404.
Can you help?
-
Hi Yoseph,
If you liked the broken link checker Chrome plugin then you could check out another Chrome plugin that the company I work for created. It's called Redirect Path and I use it all the time. It's a handy header and redirect checker that flags up any 301, 302, 404 & 500 errors on any page you visit.
Hope that helps!

Only a plus to Adam's response: remember to design custom 404 pages. It's a good idea to include links to pages you want to rank, a search box or a list of featured pages (post, categories, etc.) At least, it may help to keep users staying in your website.
Hope it helps.
Sergio.

Adam, any more good links and tools that you can share with me? I see you know "something" about SEO and web-building...

No problem. Happy to help.

Thanks Adam, Great help!!!!
You made my life much easier!

Hi Yoseph,
To find broken links I like to use the Check My Links plugin for Chrome.
As for the 404 errors. I believe there is a way to view which pages are linking to them using the SEOMoz tools but I prefer to just use the Screaming Frog spider. Once you have crawled the site with this tool, all you need to do is select the response codes tab at the top, filter by Client Error (4xx) then click on the links and select the In Links tab at the bottom to see the linking page.
Hope that helps,
Adam.

Thanks for your time.
I just cant find any broken links... I don't understand what you answered

I think you need to post the URL! Have you tried the links from every page? Although personally I would use an include file to reduce errors and maintenance time, but not sure if you are...

How do fix twin home pages
Search engine analysis is indicating that my site has twin home pages (www.mysite.com and http://mysite.com). The error message I'm getting is: "your website resides at both www.mysite.com and mysite.com. My uploaded index page is a .htm page (not .html). I don't know if that matters. Can someone explain how this happened and what I can do to fix it? Thanks!

Mass 404 pages
Hi Guys, If I were to have to take down the majority of my site, taking all content and links pointing to that content down. How would the search engines react? Would I get a penalty for the majority of the site all of the sudden missing? My only concern is the loss of traffic on the remanding pages. Thanks!

How do you find bad links to your site?
My website has around 900 incoming links and I have a Google 50 penalty that is sitewide. I have been doing research and from what I can see is that the 50 penalty is usually associated with scetchy links. The penalty started last year. I had about 40 related domains to my main site and each had a simple one page site with a link to the main site. (I know I screwed up) I cleaned up all of those links by removing them. The single page site still exist, but they have no links and several of them still rank very well. I also had an outside SEO person that bought a few links. I came clean with Google and told them everything. I gave them all of my sites and that the SEO person had bought links. I gave them full disclosure and removed everything. I have one site that I can't get the link removed from. I have contacted them numerous times to remove the link and I get no response. I am curious if anyone has had a simular experience and how they corrected the situation. Another issue is that my site is "thin" because its an ecommerce affiliate site and full of affiliate links. I work in the costume market. I'm also afraid that I have other bad links pointing to my site. Dooes anyone know of a tool to identify bad links that Google may be penalizing me for at this time. Here is Google's latest denial of my reconsideration request. Dear site owner or webmaster of XXXXXXXXX.com. We received a request from a site owner to reconsider XXXXXXXX.com for compliance with Google's Webmaster Guidelines. We've reviewed your site and we believe that some or all of your pages still violate our quality guidelines. What Are The Page Linking Options?
Okay, so I'm working with a site that has pretty good domain authority, but the interior pages are not well linked or optimized. So, it ranks for some terms, but everything goes to the home page. So, I'd like to increase the authority of the interior pages. The client is not wild about spreading targeted juice via something like a footer. They also don't like a "Popular Searches" style link list. The objection is that it's not attractive. They currently use cute euphemisms as the linking text, so like "cool stuff" instead of "sheepskin seat covers." In that made up example, they'd like to rank for the latter, but insist on using the former. What about a slide show with alt text/links? Would that increase the authority of those pages in a term-targeted kinda way? Are there other options? Does it matter how prominent those links are, like footers not as good as something higher up the page? They currently use a pull-down kind of thing that still results in some pages having no authority. Do bots use that equally well? Thanks!

404 help
Hello all, firstly let me apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this question. I have a site www.promptresponseaccidentmanagement.com which gets a 200ok when checked for crawl issues, however pages such as /whiplash-injury-compensation-claims.php , /road-traffic-accident-compensation-claims.php and quite a few more return a 404. That's fine (usually) as I can quite happily fix that most of the time. However if you actually go to those pages in your browser, or click through to them on any part of the site you will see that they are in fact not redirecting to a 404 and everything is fine!? Any body got any ideas? Best H
