Seo & Real Estate Site?
-
I am a Realtor. I am also a web developer. I want to make a site about real estate and web development. Primarily how I use my unique skills with web to sell homes.
A real estate website caps it's Page Rank very low. There are not a lot of good backlinks to get when compared to the web development industry. There are millions of blogs I participate in about web development/seo. There are a lot of blogs I participate in about real estate too; however, the real estate websites all have low page ranks. This is obviously because the seo/web development industries know how to build page rank, which makes it easier to accumulate it. It's difficult finding good outlets to get link power from in real estate.
How confused would google be? Is there an acceptable strategy to making this a reality?
Please point out all of the variables I am not seeing. Pros and Cons. I'm not an SEO pro. I would be going for the keyword Pensacola Real Estate. I would accumulate backlinks from the real estate industry and the web design industry.

Don't know how much I can dumb down php lol.
Thanks Kane!

Also, I would add one comment: write all of your web dev-related content from the perspective of a realtor. That's the one thing that will make the content work with the rest of your site. If you start writing about advanced developer topics that are totally useless to a realtor reading the site, then that is typically going to be too far off topic.

Relevance is definitely important, and you'll want to be sure to get plenty of links from real estate related websites. But, you should take a broad view of what's relevant.
For example, if someone writes an article about "fun ways to keep your kids entertained during a day of house shopping" for a mommy blog, that's a relevant piece of content, on an otherwise unrelated website.
Say you write an article for YouMoz about "10 creative pieces of content that any realtor can use to earn links" - that too is a link from a relevant page on a site that is otherwise unrelated.
Don't worry too much about the relevance of the domain, especially if you can get the page-level relevance higher. Google is OK at understanding things on a domain level and a page level, but that doesn't mean that they'll discredit good links from sites that aren't in the exact same niche.
Also, don't forget about other forms of relevance. Local relevancy is a great one for your niche (ranging from neighborhood level to city level [Pensacola] to county level to state level [Florida]). Also, think vertically within your industry: house inspection, title insurance, mortgage brokers, and other homeowner-related sites all are relevant to your website in their own way.

Now I am excited. I've never combined my concepts. I operate a lot of domains that are not similar. I have always wanted to run a site about who/what I really am. An agent that focuses on the web :).
Can I get some more members opinions! Give me some advice on this please.
I could get a link from SEOMOZ now. LOL I never made a single backlink to my real estate sites because there was no relevance.

Yes, I understand. You're only going to get those links from web design sites if there is content on your site that is relevant to web design. So, you need to create that content on your site before you have anything to link to. Those pages won't rank for traditional real estate keywords, but the pages will pass link value to other pages on the site, and the domain overall.
The relevance won't be an issue - although you will have to build all of the normal realtor links as well as the web design-related links if you want to compete. However, the web design links will be a good way to exceed the competition.
Google will recognize on a domain level that the site overall is about both web design and real estate. They will also recognize on a page level that some pages are about a specific topic. You'll need to be conscious of what keywords you're targeting on each page.

Do you understand my objective? I want to back link to my site on sites about web design because they average a much higher Page Rank (I also spend MUCH more of my time on those sites). I want to RANK for Real Estate keywords.
I fear the relevance (web design) will not let me rank for Real Estate Keywords. I know I can get a high Page Rank, but will it help me rank for real estate because the PR is earned on web design...
I don't care about ranking for any web design keywords. I know how difficult that can be, lol. Forbid I mention ranking for... SEO keywords.

Google would not be confused - if you're building a site about web development for the real estate industry, they'll pick up on that very quickly. There's nothing wrong with that and frankly I think it's a good way to build yourself a niche.
If your question is regarding whether you'll be able to still target traditional keywords like "Pensacola Real Estate," I don't think that will be an issue.

SEO and PR
In the home improvement industry (windows, doors and conservatories) what is the best approach with regard to PR in order to build quality links. It's a lot easier if you are selling a computer, mirror, widget etc as you have an actual product that you can send magazines, bloggers, journalists to review/feature for inclusion in their publications. It's a lot more difficult if you are a builder, double glazing installer etc to get this PR coverage as you have nothing to send them to review, feature etc. What approach do the experts on the forum think that would work best in the double glazing industry to secure coverage across publications both online and offline?

Sort of lost my way - Links, SEO
Not sure where to start with this so please bare with me. I do the SEO for our company website (we're a small family business), I'm not an SEO'er by profession (I'm a carpenter/joiner) but been doing our site for ten or so years. About 12 months ago sort of let go of work & web things a bit due to very sudden family bereavement which kind of hit me hard. So when I did get back into doing bits on our site I probably then concentrated a little bit too much on content building rather than going after links etc. As a result we've dropped in the SERPS a bit, but having said that still just about clinging within the top ten for our terms. Since I've started again we've had Panda/Penguin and I'm a little unsure how to go about getting links in, most of my competitors are using things like blog commenting (just random blogs that are do follow) , recip linking (any sites as long as they give a link!) etc basically things that long term will hold no value long term (or possibly none even to begin with). All this brand stuff leaves me at a loss, we're a small family business as our the majority of our competitors so not 100% sure that the branding stuff I'm reading about is relevant? As I say I've got some pretty decent content, some of which I am trying to push with mixed results – we're not in a very sexy niche so not much chance of it picking up links naturally! Another thing I am noticing is in my niche I don't think any SEO companies are involved with my competitors, most of our competitors are ranking their home pages for every single related search term, whilst I've have always tried to create a page for each search term and I have these pages ranking. For example my main search term, lets say 'wooden doors' I rank an internal page for this term whilst everyone else seems to rank homepages. I'm finding it hard to get new links into this page, so one idea I do have is elsewhere on my site I have a guide to fitting the doors (with videos, pictures and text) so what I'm thinking is place this guide on my 'wooden doors' page making it a bit more linkable (it's fairly new and not yet gained any links, so no loss to move it) and would also mean a variation of anchor text. A good idea do you think? Some of my other content has been linked to by colleges in the UK, unfortunately all the links are behind moodle log-ins (give me a decent link you leeches! Lol) ! I am thinking of getting in touch with other colleges to see if the content would be useful, but actually getting hold of the person responsible for the subject is proving difficult! I've also done a bit of guest blogging, however I'm torn between writing decent stuff for our blog or giving it away (I wouldn't like to give something away thats poor, ok or doesn’t make sense) to other blogs. Sorry for the ramble (if you've made it this far then thanks for reading!)! Would appreciate all advice. Ultimately would love to get an SEO'er involved but looking around the good un's are out of our price range so I may seek some training as it may prove more beneficial.

Links from Related Sites with Low PR or semi-related sites with High PR?
Is it better to get a link from a site with lower PR but related content or higher PR but semi-related or unrelated content? For example, if I sell shoes, would a link from a PR1 or PR2 shoe or apparel site be better or a link from PR4 website that sells books be better? I'm not talking about sites with completely unrelated content, but how relevant is PR in obtaining relevant links if I am trying to raise the PR and rankings of my own site?

Should we fire our SEO Vendor?
Dear SeoMozers, We are working on ranking towards some hyper competitive keywords (each query has millions of searches a month) and working with an external SEO Vendor. We were not satisfied with the progress, therefore we asked them to send a revised SEO Plan. Here's what they proposed: 1. On Page Optimization (standard techniques) Off Page Optimization 1. Directory Submissions (100) 2. Article Marketing (Two unique 300 word articles to be submitted to 300 directories) 3. Press Release (Two Press Releases to 100 PR Sites) 4. Classified Ads Submissions 5. Business Listings 6. Link Reinforcement (Create wheel to circulate traffic) 7. Blog Submissions, Commenting, Forum Posting 8. Web 2.0 Link Building (Squidoo Lens, Hub Page, Link Wheel etc) 9. One Way Links (Not Specified how many) Our concern is that this sounds like low quality link building. We've given them 19 top keywords to achieve rankings for and will be paying $20-25K to achieve Top 3-5 rankings for the targeted terms. Do you think this strategy would work or should we change the SEO Vendor?

Backlinks from PR sites not showing in Open Site Explorer
Hi, Over the last year I have used a range of different PR sites to post news articles that link back to various pages on my site. However, barely any show up as link backs on Open Site Explorer, neither follow nor nofollow links. Can anyone explain why this is and whether or not the dofollow links count towards SEO if they are not picked up by OSE?
