.png vs .jpg - Which ranks better or does it matter?
-
Hi Moz community,
I am working on a SEO project (ecommerce) and most of the images on the website are .png and I notice they do not rank but yet the .jpg do. Do you recommend I change all the .png to .jpg? They all have alt text and keyword filenames (no spam
Here is the website www.moldear.com.ar. Notice the swimming pool coping tiles are .png and the swimming pool images are .jpg. I cannot get the coping images to rank for some reason
Thanks
Carla

Thanks Lynn,
I see what my issue is. I need to rename some with more generic keywords...

One thing that I want to chime in about and discuss is image size and image compression and optimization for speed purposes, as images are a significant factor in the page load time of the site. + Image optimization helps with site load speed.
Just a little different between the two types: PNG is better for crisp images with a low number of colours, and JPG is better for a low-bandwidth image - however it is not as crisp and therefore not very good to be used for the layout of the website. Generally, JPG is for photos and pictures, whereas PNG (or GIF) is for website layout or for computer generated graphics.
Great resource here which is better for image compression and/or optimization if its of interest.
Not directly important to ranking but important in general sense of ranking.

the cleaner/bigger the image, the better they perform for me. I tested this in the "sexy celebrities" niche where you get to compete with thousands of new players everyday and authority sites. Ive gotten great organic image traffic just by optimising it there.

There is no preference at all that the rankings is influenced based on extensions.
if the images with png tend to be in a higher competitive search queries it might be it.
are all png and jpg original images?

Hi Carla,
I have never heard of one file type being better or worse for image ranking, I would think it makes no difference so use the type that makes the most sense for the kind of image it is (ie jpg for photos, png for logos and generally whichever will give you a lower file size). That being said, I did a search for 'Línea Solarium Recto' and your images are the first ones shown so it might depend on what phrase you are trying to rank for with certain images, the pngs in other words are certainly showing up for quite specific searches.

They seem to have alt text which is good how long have you given it as like most thing in SEO it can take time.

Switching from ranked PDF to normal page ...
Hi folks, I have a project which is ranking well for specific product-keywords. The problem is, that the ranking pages are PDF files of those products (datasheets). But i do have a normal (html) pages for each product as well. Each of these pages has grade a for the specific keyword and is well crawled, etc. How can I urge Google to "switch" from these PDF files to the specific html pages. I was trying this by testing it robots.txt to disallow to index the PDF file (I tested it with one for first). I would add rel=nofollow to the link to the PDF on the specifi product html page (?) ... Any ideas? Seb

Google Places / Map Results CTR vs Top Organic Result
I have a client who is currently ranking close to the top of the Google Places results for a handful of important local keywords. They have a competitor who is pretty consistantly ranking in number #1 and #2 organic positions, above the Places results. Does anyone know the average click through rates for results similar to these? Do the #1 and #2 organic positions still outperform the lower placed Google Places (with side map) results when the search intent is very local? I just wonder if they are possibly in a better position as-is if people are more likely to use the map or places listings on the SERPs page, rather than click through to another site. Thanks 🙂

SEO for Explicit / Medical Pictures - Will It Hurt Rankings?
I have a client with page 1 rankings for several keywords. He wants to make some updates to his website. He is offering a new service and wants to show before and after photos of the procedure. He is an OB/GYN, so the before/after pictures are very explicit and have full nudity. How will this affect his rankings? Is there something that I can do to tell Google and other SE's that these photos are medical and not pornographic? Should I host them on another domain? Just looking for thoughts and insight. Thank you in advance!

Local Keyword vs Business Name in URL
I am working with a local business owner who has purchased multiple domains. One includes the geographic area she serves and the type of business she runs. The other includes her business name and the type of business she runs. She is unsure of which domain she would like to use as the main URL for her business website. When choosing a domain for a small, local business, would you consider it advantageous to have the main geographic area that the business serves in the URL rather than the actual name of the business? What would be the best use of domain name which isn't selected from a SEO standpoint?
