How to Fix 404 Errors
-
Hey Moz'ers - I just added a new site to my Moz Pro account and when I got the crawl report back there was a ton of 404 errors (see attached). I realize the best way to fix these is to manually go through every single error and see what the issue is... I just don't have time right now, and I don't have a team member that can jump on this either, but realize this will be a huge boost to this client if/when I get these resolved... So my question is:
Is there a quicker way to get these resolved? Is there an outsourcing company that can fix my clients errors correctly? Thanks for the help in advance:)

Thanks Joe - I'll check the settings right now for NextGen and see what I find. I appreciate it.

Good morning Travis,
I put your site in the system last night and have all the errors to see now. I do see what is going wrong ... but not exactly sure why.
I pulled up a few of the error codes: http://www.felco-ind.com/products/roller-attachment/nggallery/page/1?page_id=27 Example: if you remove nggallery/page/1?page_id=27 and use this link http://www.felco-ind.com/products/roller-attachment/ you do not get an error.
I did the same process for a few different 404 errors you have.
So the question is why are the urls adding the N Gallery code and the extra page id. I am thinking there could be a setting in next gen gallery you can fix. I would check all the plugin settings in the backend. You should also check Next Gen Gallery support forums as well to get the quickest fix from a Next gen gallery ninja over there that knows the plugin inside out. That way you have an idea if it is the plugin itself or a conflict with another issue or plugin on your website.
I also noticed these links in your source code that I would change to absolute links instead
About | FAQ's You should change
all of these links to the full url Page title HereSorry i could not figure out an exact answer of how to fix it for you, but hope I pointed you in the right direction to get it figured out.

Michael - thanks for the reply. I'd send you a screenshot of what I have for permalinks but now I can't even use the backend without getting a fatal error. Something went haywire in this last update we did it seems...?
Once we get this issue fixed, I'll send over a screen grab of our permalinks settings, and yes will replace our current SEO plugin with Yoast. Much appreciated.

Hey Travis, 404 status codes pages are soft errors but causes problems if you have large number of 404 pages. I would suggest to use screaming frog to list up all your 404 pages and redirect all 404 pages to newly create corresponding pages. This is the best solution ever seen and could boost your trust rank, site performance and indexing.
moreover, If error is associated with WP plugin, then better to deactivate it or use SEO Yoast, as said by Michael Edwards.

I am agree with you. Follow this instruction Travis Wiley. I think this instruction help you.

I have run the site through ScreamingFrog. You have masses and masses of 301 redirects going on which you need to resolve. It looks like you could have some permalinks issue going on. What do have set in Settings >> Permalinks? I'd also look at installing Yoast Wordpress SEO as I recall there are options in there to handle permalinks as well.

Joseph,
No need to keep private I need all the help I can get:) Here's the site : www.felco-ind.com.
It appears that most of the 404 errors are coming from a plugin that is used on the site called NGGallery... Not sure what the deal is with it, but looks like it is creating a handful of URL's that do not exist? Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Hey Travis,
Can you send me the website url, or a few of the 404 error urls and links and I'll have a closer look for you.
If it's a website you want to keep private you can send them in a private message as well.
Joe

How do I fix 5xx errors on pdf's?
Hi all, I'm having a huge (and very frustrating) issue-- I have 437 pages with 5xx errors and have no idea how to go about fixing them. All of them are links to pdf's, and when I click on the link on the Site Crawl page, it opens just fine. I've been trying to find the answer to how to fix this issue for weeks with no luck at all. I tried linking the pdf's to their parent page, tried renaming the links to be more concise and crawler friendly, and I've searched all types of articles involving pdf's and 5xx errors, all with no luck. Does anyone have any idea why these pages are getting this error and how I can fix them? Huge thanks in advance! Daniela S.

Spammy inbound links: Don't Fix It If It's Not Broken?
Hi Moz community, Our website is nearing the end of a big redesign to be mobile-responsive. We decided to delay any major changes to text content so that if we do suffer a rankings drop upon launch, we'll have some ability to isolate the cause. In the meantime I'm analyzing our current SEO strengths and weaknesses. There is a huge discrepancy between our rankings and our inbound link profile. Specifically, we do great on most of our targeted keywords and in fact had a decent surge in recent months. But Link Profiler turned up hundreds of pages of inbound links from spammy domains, many of which don't even display a webpage when I click there. (shown in uploaded image) "Don't fix it if it's not broken" is conflicting with my natural repulsion to these sorts of referrals. Assuming we don't suffer a rankings drop from the redesign, how much of a priority should this be? There are too many and most are too spammy to contact the webmasters, so we'll need to do it through a Disavow. I couldn't even open the one at the top of the list because our business web proxy identified it as adult content. It seems like a common conception is that if Google hasn't penalized us for it yet, they will eventually. Are we talking about the algorithm just stumbling upon these links and hurting us or would this be something we would find in Manual Actions? (or both?) How long after the launch should we wait before attacking these bad links? Is there a certain spam score that you'd say is a threshold for "Yes, definitely get rid of it"? And when we do, should we Disavow domains one domain at a time to monitor any potential drops or all at once? (this seems kind of obvious but if the spam score and domain authority alone is enough of a signal that it won't hurt us, we'd rather get it done asap) How important is this compared to creating fresh new content on all the product pages? Each one will have new images as well as product reviews, but the product descriptions will be the same ones we've had up for years. I have new content written but it's delayed pending any fallout from the redesign. Thanks for any help with this! d1SB2JP.jpg

404 even after Successful 301 Redirection
Hi, I've got quite few 404 error links on my site and I manually redirected all of them one by one with 301. They are redirecting successfully. But when I check my MOZ analysis, it still shows me as 404 error. I've done this about 4 days ago and MOZ crawled to my site couple times after that if it's not everyday. Do you know what the issue could be? And how can I fix it? PS: I've used Wordpress Redirection tool for it first and redirection did not work. Then I had to install the Simple 301 Redirects plugin to get it done.

Error on duplicated content, but when checking shouldn't been possible
Dear all, Every week I look at the different crawl reports for our website, since the start of my SeoMoz membership the Errors for duplicated content and duplicated Title is rising. But if I take out the .csv file and look in more detail, and select a pages which is marked as duplicated content, a canonical is actually existing on this page. So it shouldn't be an warning, I have no idea what the issue could be. For example pagesare marked as duplicated content, <colgroup><col width="966"></colgroup>

To overcome duplicated content we coded that a canonical tag onis placed on every page with parameters and the main page is http://www.zylom.com/es/descargar-juegos/3-en-raya/ but it doesn't seem to work, because my error warnings are still rising. Duplicate page error from SEOmoz
SEOmoz's Crawl Diagnostics is complaining about a duplicate page error. I'm trying to use a rel=canonical but maybe I'm not doing it right. This page is the original, definitive version of the content: https://www.borntosell.com/covered-call-newsletter/sent-2011-10-01 This page is an alias that points to it (each month the alias is changed to point to the then current issue): https://www.borntosell.com/covered-call-newsletter/latest-issue The alias page above contains this tag (which is also updated each month when a new issue comes out) in the section: Is that not correct? Is the https (vs http) messing something up? Thanks!
