Medical / Health Content Authority - Content Mix Question

Greetings, I have an interesting challenge for you. Well, I suppose "interesting" is an understatement, but here goes.
Our company is a women's health site. However, over the years our content mix has grown to nearly 50/50 between unique health / medical content and general lifestyle/DIY/well being content (non-health). Basically, there is a "great divide" between health and non-health content.
As you can imagine, this has put a serious damper on gaining ground with our medical / health organic traffic. It's my understanding that Google does not see us as an authority site with regard to medical / health content since we "have two faces" in the eyes of Google.
My recommendation is to create a new domain and separate the content entirely so that one domain is focused exclusively on health / medical while the other focuses on general lifestyle/DIY/well being. Because health / medical pages undergo an additional level of scrutiny per Google - YMYL pages - it seems to me the only way to make serious ground in this hyper-competitive vertical is to be laser targeted with our health/medical content. I see no other way.
Am I thinking clearly here, or have I totally gone insane? Thanks in advance for any reply.

I like Robert's ideas about making a site structure that segregates the topics by folder and by internal linking.
My sites have very diverse topics and they rank well. I believe that it is more about the vigor of your publishing efforts, the quality of your content, and how well your visitors engage it.

No, you're right. If that's the degree to which your content is diverging, it may be necessary to have 2 completely separate domains. One set does not have anything to do with the other, and that will absolutely affect relevance and compatibility when it comes to linking practices.
You could go with a subdomain structure and diverge your link profiles - it would have much the same effect as going with 2 separate domains. That being said, it makes life really difficult if you are moving domains or redirecting in the future, so a subdomain structure is pretty permanent and not ideal if most links are coming back to your Home Page.
You could attempt a social media bridge for both sites, but that may be a bit beyond what you are trying to accomplish here. I think you have the right of it based on the facts presented.

I think the "content divide" is even more severe for us, since we don't have the patients vs providers issue. All content is consumer-facing.
We truly have two radically different buckets of content. For example, copd symptoms vs. how to get rid of ants, or living with atrial fibrillation vs. aries daily horoscope, or ways to lower your blood pressure vs. how to deal with a difficult coworker. These topics are incongrous to me, and I don't see a way to keep them on same domain. Feel free to disagree!

Interesting question is right! I did some consulting for a pharma client recently who was having this exact same problem. They had a divergence of domain authority because they were attempting to appeal to 2 different markets (i.e. 2 different sets of keywords - one for patients and one for providers) using the same domain. Their original answer was to create a subdomain which could be ranked separately so they could appeal to their patients and their providers simultaneously, but that split their link juice too much and they lost out both ways. This is when they contacted me.
My suggestion was to create a site architecture that reflected the needs of the 2 groups that were approaching the site. In other words, creating 2 funnels, 1 each for patients and for providers. Since we instituted that change 3 months back, we hit 1st page and continue to improve. That would be my suggestion here:
Build out 2 niche lines using site structure for health vs. non-health to create relevance in the eyes of Google - that should be enough to take care of the issue you're outlining here. Let me know if there's anything I'm missing here.

[Very Urgent] More 100 "/search/adult-site-keywords" Crawl errors under Search Console
I just opened my G Search Console and was shocked to see more than 150 Not Found errors under Crawl errors. H3 Tags - Should I Link to my content Articles- ? And do I have to many H3 tags/ Links as it is ?
Hello All, On my ecommerce landing pages, I currently have links to my products as H3 Tags. I also have useful guides displayed on the page with links useful articles we have written (they currently go to my news section). I am wondering if I should put those article links as additional H3 tags as well for added seo benefit or do I have to many tags as it is ?. Sites in multiple countries using same content question
Hey Moz, I am looking to target international audiences. But I may have duplicate content. For example, I have article 123 on each domain listed below. Will each content rank separately (in US and UK and Canada) because of the domain? The idea is to rank well in several different countries. But should I never have an article duplicated? Should we start from ground up creating articles per country? Some articles may apply to both! I guess this whole duplicate content thing is quite confusing to me. I understand that I can submit to GWT and do geographic location and add rel=alternate tag but will that allow all of them to rank separately? www.example.com www.example.co.uk www.example.ca Please help and thanks so much! Removing Content 301 vs 410 question
Hello, I was hoping to get the SEOmoz community’s advice on how to remove content most effectively from a large website. I just read a very thought-provoking thread in which Dr. Pete and Kerry22 answered a question about how to cut content in order to recover from Panda. (http://www.seomoz.org/q/panda-recovery-what-is-the-best-way-to-shrink-your-index-and-make-google-aware). Kerry22 mentioned a process in which 410s would be totally visible to googlebot so that it would easily recognize the removal of content. The conversation implied that it is not just important to remove the content, but also to give google the ability to recrawl that content to indeed confirm the content was removed (as opposed to just recrawling the site and not finding the content anywhere). This really made lots of sense to me and also struck a personal chord… Our website was hit by a later Panda refresh back in March 2012, and ever since then we have been aggressive about cutting content and doing what we can to improve user experience. When we cut pages, though, we used a different approach, doing all of the below steps:

1. We cut the pages
2. We set up permanent 301 redirects for all of them immediately.
3. And at the same time, we would always remove from our site all links pointing to these pages (to make sure users didn’t stumble upon the removed pages. When we cut the content pages, we would either delete them or unpublish them, causing them to 404 or 401, but this is probably a moot point since we gave them 301 redirects every time anyway. We thought we could signal to Google that we removed the content while avoiding generating lots of errors that way… I see that this is basically the exact opposite of Dr. Pete's advice and opposite what Kerry22 used in order to get a recovery, and meanwhile here we are still trying to help our site recover. We've been feeling that our site should no longer be under the shadow of Panda. So here is what I'm wondering, and I'd be very appreciative of advice or answers for the following questions: 1. Is it possible that Google still thinks we have this content on our site, and we continue to suffer from Panda because of this?
Could there be a residual taint caused by the way we removed it, or is it all water under the bridge at this point because Google would have figured out we removed it (albeit not in a preferred way)? 2. If there’s a possibility our former cutting process has caused lasting issues and affected how Google sees us, what can we do now (if anything) to correct the damage we did? Copying my Facebook content to website considered duplicate content?
I write career advice on Facebook on a daily basis. On my homepage users can see the most recent 4-5 feeds (using FB social media plugin). I am thinking to create a page on my website where visitors can see all my previous FB feeds. Would this be considered duplicate content if I copy paste the info, but if I use a Facebook social media plugin then it is not considered duplicate content? I am working on increasing content on my website and feel incorporating FB feeds would make sense. thank you

/%category%/%postname%/ Permalink structure
Mostly everyone seems to agree that /%category%/%postname%/ is the best blog structure. I'm thinking of changing my structure to that because now it's structured by date which is bad. But almost all of my posts are assigned to more than one category. Won't this create duplicate pages?
