FAQ page structure
-
I have read in other discussions that having all questions on an FAQ page is the way to go and then if the question has an answer worthy of its own page, you should abbreviate the answer and link to the page with more content.
My question is when using some templates in WP, they have a little + button you can click and it reveal the answer to the question. Does this hurt SEO versus having all text visible and then using headers/subheaders?
An example of the + button https://fyrfyret.dk/faq/

Makes perfect sense. Thanks a lot. Just the type of feedback I was looking for.
-
Thanks. That was kind of my thought. I wasnt convinced the setup as now is the best. Thanks for the feedback, it is much appreciated!

^^ these are both great answers.
I'll add one thing: I often view FAQ pages as a great opportunity to earn featured snippets for specific questions related to a brand. I can't say for certain, and this may not at all be a goal of yours, but the HTML structure this WP theme element utilizes probably doesn't lend itself to stand out for earning any featured snippets. If you break them out of the FAQ element, utilize headers well, and maybe even consider schema markup, there's a chance you could earn a featured snippet or two among those frequently asked questions.

I'm afraid we're in a bit of a state of limbo on this issue, Nickington.
Currently, Google's ranking is based on the desktop version of the site for both desktop and mobile results.
Google has clearly stated, and many tests have confirmed, that content which is not visible unless a user interacts with the page (such as having to click the drop-down for the FAQ result) is deemphasized in search results.
BUT! Google has also stated that they are in the midst of changing to a mobile-first index which will mean that the mobile version of websites will be used for ranking assessment. In addition, they've been quite clear that at that point, since things like accordion drop-downs are so much better UX for mobile users, that kind of hidden content will no longer be "penalised".
Unfortunately, there's been no declared date for when the switch to the mobile Index will occur. Instead, they've said that it will be rolled out gradually to individual sites as they detect that the mobile version of a site is ready for it. This means it's entirely impossible to assess when the changeover might apply to your site.
So for absolute best SEO, the solution is unfortunately a bunch of extra work for a hybrid solution My best recommendation would be to build out the FAQ content using headers and sub-headers so the content is fully visible on the page and gets full indexing authority from the search engine. Then keep an eye on the mobile indexing of your site to detect when it appears that it has moved fully into the mobile-first Index stage, and at that point redo the FAQ page to utilize the accordion drop downs instead.
The alternative would be to build out the page using the accordion drop downs to start with, and accept the fact that it will be some time before that hidden content has a chance to rank effectively. this would definitely be a second-best option in my opinion.
Does that all make sense?

Hi Nickington,
Good question!
The FAQs are for better UX.
Also, thinking on mobile UX it is great to have a list and quickly find out the option that I really need.
Browseo's amazing tool might help you to kow out what are the signasl that the algorithms can read about a page of your website.Said that, I think that your FAQs page is doing great.
Although you might consider to check the Moz SEO Guide on regard the Meta Keywords. Good luck!Mª Verónica

Duplicated page titles
Dear friends, We have a problem which occurs on our page with duplicated page titles. Landlords are posting rooms on our page and most of them are giving the same name to the rooms and after that, we are getting more and more duplicated page titles. We are applying random whit this title tag: Accommodation for students in {city.name}: {name}. English title

Why is my contact us page ranking higher than my home page?
Hello, It doesn't matter what keyword I put into Google (when I'm not signed in and have cleaned down my browsing history) the contact us page ranks higher than the home page. I'm not sure why this is, the home page has a higher page authority, more links and more social media shares, the website is an established one. When I have checked Google Analytics my home page gets more people landing on it than the contact us page. It looks like people are ignoring the contact us page and scrolling down until they find the home page. I'd appreciate any help or advice you might have. Thank you.

Index Page Content
Mozers, I am of the believe and as a person who puts the utmost emphasis on the index page of any website I am trying to rank, especially with a new domain ... insuring content is relevant, structured, optimized and we have some link juice flowing in. I find once we get the index page ranked, Google's little bots then start to index and rank accordingly the rest of the website ... and we start producing results. We also develop websites (dare I say its where we expertise in) and unexpectantly the client has asked us to carry out SEO work additionally to their web development. Problem lies here, their index page, has absolutely no written content at all, just one large image with a logo (Fashion Website) ...Which I identify as a huge issue as per my explanation is paragraphs one or two. I am sure withe the many more qualified SEO experts and gurus within the SEOmoz community, you have also come across this issue So a few questions, if you don't mind adding advice. 1 - Am I putting too much emphasize on content within the index page, in terms of indexing and actually ranking ...yes I appreciate that terms within the website will be ranked against other pages other than the index page, but will it harm us for having no content at all within the index page 2 - If so, and yes is the answer to above, how do we handle it, we have spoke with the client and he is pretty adamant that he want the index page as is, he has been through out the whole website building process. As suggested, any advice would be really appreciated, its a difficult market to rank within a it is, and i can only see this index page making the task a lot more difficult Cheers John

Keep our category navigation in tree structure but move our URLs to a more flat structure. Good plan?
In our Magento store, products are arranged into categories, subcategories and so on. We typically have 3 or 4 layers of category depth. This makes it nice and easy for customers to find stuff, but it means that the end categories have massive long urls. I'd like to keep our category tree structure in place from a navigation point of view, but I feel the url structure is pushing some important stuff to the back of the shop as it were. We have something like 200 categories in total. So, assuming every individual category has an a unique name, I'd like to rewrite the urls so that: ourshop.com/car-parts/
On-Page Optimization | | DWJames
stays as
ourshop.com/car-parts/ ourshop.com/car-parts/suspension/
becomes
ourshop.com/suspension/ ourshop.com/car-parts/suspension/springs
becomes
ourshop.com/springs/ ourshop.com/car-parts/suspension/springs/thismake-lowering-springs
becomes
ourshop.com/thismake-lowering-springs/ and so on....
I'll need some custom magento URL rewrite work done, but that's another story. The real question is whether you guys feel this is worthwhile? Are there any other stores with a deep categorised navigation structure, but a flat url structure? thanks, James0 -

Woah, my A-grade optimized pages that were on the first page have all vanished outside the top 50 in Google... is this Panda?
Yep as mentioned, I had some pages hit the top ten pretty quickly after ensuring they were A-grade for pretty uncompetitive keywords however, today, all bar 2 have just vanished from the top 50! All were ranking in Google.co.uk and I know we were predicting the Panda update to hit soon but WOW! My client is understandably a little upset, what on earch do I tell him and what should I do about it? Cheers! jT
