Is this Directory Guide by SEOmoz still accurate?
-
I need to pay for some directories, but I don't know if BOTW, Business.com, Joe Ant and others are still worth it. Anybody know if this is still viable?
http://www.seomoz.org/directories
All Mozzers, can you please give me a 'thumbs up' so I can get more MozPoints?
-
I would do it only for the most trusted of brand name directories - Yahoo!, Better Business Bureau, and maybe Best of the Web, but probably very little else.
-
As always, this area of paid links seems to bring about differing opinions. Are paid links on directories still valid? Listening to the likes of Ken McGaffin over at Wordtracker, he seems to suggest we should never pay for links or directories.
Moreover, if it is acceptable to go with a legitimate list such as this one is there such a thing as too many of these (in this list) paid directories?
SO.... is there a final definitive word (at least for today!) - paid directory links - still acceptable and will it harm if I did 30? 50? 200?
-
We're actually going to analyze them as part of a project: https://plus.google.com/u/1/111294201325870406922/posts/MMFUVjTqHYN
I expect that while many "crap" directories that existed just for SEO will be affected, these will remain high quality and generally valuable.
-
I was wondering this very thing! Especially after you're hearing all this Penguin directory stuff. Is the directory listings still good, as of May 2012? We're all wondering!
Because... Rand... I need some links!!
-
Thank you so much - I managed to miss the link in that post somehow when I looked at it previously...
-
Hi Joseph,
The new list became available in late September of last year. See my previous post above that has a link to the blog post Cyrus made with some more information.
-
Just found this post while searching the forums and wondering if the new list ever became available?
-
Hi! We updated this directory in late September. See the post at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices for more information.
-
I'm sure it will be worth it in the end. Just to make sure im not going to post to any directories ( apart from DMOZ ) until Rand and the team get back to us all!
-
Just wanted to leave a quick note saying that SEOmoz has upgraded our Link Directory! You can view a post Cyrus wrote with more information about the directory update and link building via directories at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices
-
Thanks for updating this directory. I can't believe there were over 2,000 people who viewed my post.
-
Since the full-fledged version is very significant, I've asked the team to come up with a mimimum solution; possibly just another list without comment/submissions functionality. I hope to have that up very soon (possibly even just as an Excel download or Google Docs accessible with a password.
-
Yeah, I heard that too. He is having a company do it for us. I'll send him a message through twitter.
-
Yes I am waiting for the updated directory list too.
-
Please give us the top 10/20 at least. It has been too late. We can wait for the perfection, but please give us a stop gap solution.
-
Well remembered David...I am also keenly awaiting the update
-
Me again
Any news on the planned replacement? Would love to have an hint as to whats in store
-
Hey Rand, Just curious, any update on this?
-
Just thought I'd revisit this discussion to see if there's been any movement. Any updates for us at all?
-
Not too close, unfortunately. We have the project specs and Justin Briggs from Distilled is working with Cyrus and Casey at Moz to finish the feature, but getting it onto the site soon will be challenging. My best guess is late September or early October, but will cross fingers that we see it sooner.
-
It's been about 60 days, how close is this to reality?
-
Hi,
Could we also divide the directory by country?
The existing directory list is very US centric. I can understand why of course, but if we could also put together a UK list that would be great!
If you don't ask you don't get!
-
Rand states "We plan to have an updated version ready to launch in the next 60 days." posted on the 6th June - so Early August 2011 looks to be the target re-launch date.
-
Awesome! Thanks for the update! I've been using the Open Site Explorer to find high ranking directory lists. However, it would be nice to have an experienced source for that info.
-
Sounds good, directories are still an easy win for smaller or niche sites where there is not much discussion out there. II am working on a site for a carpet manufacturer, not a hot topic in the blogosphere for some reason.
-
Great News.
-
Just FYI (as an update), I met last week with some folks and spec'd out a project to replace the directory list. We plan to have an updated version ready to launch in the next 60 days. It will be WAY better, have some very cool interactive functionality, and feature three sources - web, social + local directories (all of which will have subcategories, too).
I think this replacement will be awesome and can last for years to come.
-
Come on guys, Any chance pro members can get an up to date version?
-
Very much looking forward to seeing a revised list. Any guestimate when one will be available?
Dave
-
I think a note or "warning" would suffice. There is still good info on there, it's just not as relevant as it was a year ago.
-
As I mentioned above, I'm keen for a user generated one! I'd be willing to contribute!
-
Maybe it could be a feature where Users could add and then vote up and down the directory to keep it fresh, relevant and up to date. Obviously you'd have to implement something to stop spammers...
That said, I've still got a couple of good niche links from the current list
-
I pose this question as an SEO newbie: I know I'm meant to handpick which directories I submit to and go for quality rather than quantity.
Problem: the site that's keeping me off top spot has got there by getting links from 500+ directories -- low-rent ones, at that.
Why does this tactic still work in 2011?
-
I tried sending you an email and this is what I got: "This user is currently not accepting private messages"
-
I am starting a Google doc today, and will start populating directory links with information. Anyone that wants to help put the new list together, shoot me a personal message from my profile here and i will share the doc with you!
I will probably start a new Q&A post specifically for this so we can collaborate and have a dedicated section- so keep your eyes out and join the discussion.
-
I'd second that! There is a lot of UK seos that use seomoz. That said - any volunteers?
-
It may be a little out of date...but hey just proceed with caution! I always find that the seomoz juicy link finder is great for finding the more niche directories.
-
I recently submitted to JoeAnt after looking at the SEOMoz directory list. The page I wanted to submit to had a SEOMoz page authority of 39/100 and about 5 links on the page, which looked promising enough to pay 39.99. The good thing about JoeAnt is you don't have to pay every year like other directories.
-
as others have suggested it might be an idea to make a directory we could all contribute to and maybe even sort it by country (doing a dynamical domain who is look up?)
-
Did you create this.... I am up for this!!!
-
Yeah it's not great and is out of date, has broken links etc, but as with a lot of SEO advice is useful as a guide as to the sort of places you'd benefit from being listed in.
-
I like the idea of crowd sourcing the directory list. I agree with the "Dont take it down". Lets all be honest here... we mostly use the directory listings for one-way link building, and whether it actually sends traffic or not- dont really care. I know if it did send traffic, it would be crappy traffic.
I would be more than happy to contribute to a PRO generated list, only available to PRO members. That would be a nice perk, and a great value add. i think we all want to know what directories work for each other This is probably the only place i would fee ok sharing.
-
It may also be an idea to have a List for UK results separate to the US one?
-
This is good to gather the information. Let me know if this happens as i would like to have an input.
Cheers
-
Okay, well I can create a google doc and however wants to contribute can be an editor. After we finish the directory list, we can submit it to Rand and he can update the post.
-
We (all the other mozzers on here) could help to compile a new list, we've got quite a big list with comments on each at our office which we keep fairly updated... maybe everybody could share lists to compile a big one and then somebody go through it to ensure it's all a-ok
-
I also am in the group of, don't take it down. People just need to see the publication date and make their own judgments.
-
I hope you don't take it down Rand.
Frankly, I picked out one of the resources this past month and found the one site had a sister site that literally 10X's my traffic over 2 days. Of course, it wasn't the best of traffic, but it definitely was a great resource along with providing me some other great SEO benefits. If you listed just the top 10 and this site wasn't in there, I wouldn't have had as much fun as I did over those few days.
We can make the judgement call or gauge the quality on our end. You just keep spitting out the ideas like you do and I'll continue to be a follower/subscriber for as long as you do.
-
I think if it is outdated and it is not maintained then it may be creating unnecessary focus and wasted energy. I'd suggest taking it down until it is updated. Perhaps in the meantime replace it with a top 10.

I found this post from Rand from 2008 http://moz.com/blog/headsmacking-tip-1-link-requests-in-order-confirmation-emails 5 years later I'm wondering in a "no-follow" for all unnatural links in the google world we currently live in, is it still a good idea? Also does is really work? or does it annoy the customer? would it be better to use that space to up sell to your customer?

Is directory submission still a valid practice?
Hi Guys, I have few doubts running in my mind on directory submission, do you think it is still a valid practice in link building?. If your answer is "YES", then please correct me.. How submitting to directories is a natural link practice? According to Google, links should not be purchased, it should to be created naturally, but if you see, a lot of high authority directories charging amount from people to index links, why Google not stopping those directories (I mean penalizing) and stopping the people who are trying to get indexed by paying. According to me directories holds only bunch of links to some external domains (I hope I am not wrong), then how submitting to them can bring rankings to me?. Sorry, if I sound stupid in any of my points, but expecting some good answers from you folks.. 🙂

Paying for directory inclusion
I just wanted to see what the general opinion was on paying for directory entries. How high should the PR be to justify paying for it? Or how much is justifiable for entry into a directory with a lower PR? I have recently submitted my site to Yahoo Directory but I have only seen my rankings increase in the Yahoo search engine. Are there any directories that Google like?

Which Directory Sites to Choose?
Hi All I am a newbie to SEO and have a quick Q. Assuming that appropriate steps would be to; a) Ensure all onsite matters are are correct, title tags, meta descriptions, redirects, canonical issues. b) Submit to Directories c) Build Links I am approaching step b) Which Directories are worth submitting to? For those which require payment, how can I decide which are value for money or should I just use SEOMOZ list of links and assume that theyre worth the $50 - $100 if my higher ranking competitors have links from these directories. Also, can this be looked opon as grey/black hat 'buying of links'? Thank you Sean www.pretavoir.co.uk
