Permanent URLs for Twitter?
-
Hi everyone -
The site I am working on is going to start giving users the option to tweet that they completed an action. It reads, for example, "I just took the first step to ( ) with (site): (shortened link) via (Twitter name)"
Here's my question:
Should I worry about the fact that the shortened URL (we're possibly going to use Twitter's shortener T.Co, but I'm not dedicated to it) changes each time? Should we instead have a permanent short URL for the homepage (where we are going to direct people who click the link in the tweet)?
Thanks!

Rand talks about URL shorteners and their effect on link juice etc here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/is-there-anyway-for-redirected-links-to-still-provide-seo-value - Very good info (as you would expect from the bearded one...)

Roger, I do not think it is necessary, but from a branding perspective, to stand out from the crowd of normal bit.ly users (I'm one of them, btw), it could be a good idea. It may be for my site.
I'd say it depends on the site and the niche.
-
Is your own shortner really necessary? I can't imagine it is.
-
bit.ly pro would work. Personally I use yourls.org
-
Thanks. This is great info.

The actual URL takes up too much space. Also, you rarely see people using full URLs in tweets. From a "we know what we're doing here" perspective, the full URL might not be a great idea. Do you disagree?
Matt Cutts said (in the video linked to above) that any decent shortener will 301 redirect the shortened URL and thus pass link juice. I guess I am more concerned about it from a branding/tracking perspective now.
-
This sounds like a good idea. What service do you recommend for creating a custom short URL? Would bit.ly PRO work fine for this?
-
Exactly. It's why I created the http://seoaud.it shortener for my own needs.
-
Can use use the actual URL? That would get you a direct link.
Or, your idea of a permanent short URL that is 301 redirected on your main site would be a good alternative.
Links from tweets are sometimes used elsewhere and getting that linkjuice would be nice.
Also, if you use the actual URL or have complete control over the shortened URL you don't have to worry about it being changed on you.

I would not be worried about the different URLs. Almost all url shorteners 301 to the destination URL and pass link juice. Even though the shortened URLs are different, they would all be passing the juice to the same spot.
-
It's ultimately irrelevant from an SEO perspective - so it comes down to click tracking. If you have different actions, you'd want a unique shortened URL for each action.
I'd also suggest considering setting up your own URL shortener, rather than relying on 3rd party. As great as Bit.ly is, and as much as Twitter offers their own, the only way to ensure a short URL that's generated is always going to be around is to have your own.

Twitter and SEO
Hey Moz folks, I would like your input on this matter: Twitter recently made a new agreement with Google regarding the SEO & their Tweets. At the moment I have 12 different websites across 12 different markets and I`d like to know how could I use Twitter for all markets, so I can get the most out of the new deal between Twitter and Google SEO wise. If I create 12 different accounts for all my 12 websites and create tweets for all of them, it would really be a very time consuming process, but on the other hand if I only use 1 account how can I target multiple websites ? Let me know what do you think. Thanks, Andrei

Can Hootsuite Really Monitor Competition Activity Across the Facebook, Linked & Twitter?
I'm going round and round in circles with this one as everytime I ask Hootsuite they tell me the same thing and it does not work so here we go... I want to monitor another competitors social media activity. Specifically i want to see if they are active in Facebook, Twitter & Linked in. But am i right in saying you can only monitor social activity of a competitor if you can connect Hootsuite to there social media account via a stream. Put another way imagine Lacoste say - "Right give me a report on what Nike is doing on facebook". Is Hootsuite useless unless you can connect it to Nikes Favebook business page? My misery is best explained by this url - http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/tracking-via-hootsuite-3jpg_zps2fa47469.jpg If Hootsuite has this limitation then whats the point in Hootsuite promoting itself as a socail listening tool when as soon as you want to monitor a competitor you hit the proverbial brick wall. Maybe I'm using the wrong tool & hootsuite is limited or I'm a bit thick & it can be done. Any help welcome, I'm likely to be see jumping out of an office window in a town near you very very soon 😉

About url shorterner like ow.ly - does it count?
Hi there, I want to ask do you know does Google counts web pages' links in social medias like Facebook, Twitter etc when they are shortened like that: And is it better not to be shortened like that? http://ow.ly/2uk0Ow I am using HootSuite to post in those social medias and it automatically shortens them like that when there is a new post in rss emission.

How much power does using keywords on Facebook and Twitter have from an SEO perspective?
Hi all, When we add a new Christmas party package onto our website I always tweet about it with a link to the party page, utilizing a tweet such as : "New Manchester Christmas parties", followed by the link. How much power (if any) does utilizing the key phrase Manchester Christmas parties have on SEO for that page? Bearing in mind the link is shortened and doesn't mention the keywords anywhere in it, they are only present in the tweet itself. Similarly, on our company Facebook page I always post a link with a title such as "check out our new Manchester Christmas parties". Does this have much SEO benefit for the page I'm directing the link to? Many thanks!!
