Thanks for the good advice.
Money is not really the issue, just not a fan of all the directories online, probably somewhat affected by all the directory-services calling me trying to sell me listings for insane amounts of money. (Local services here in Norway.)
Good tips on using opensiteexplorer. Will definately take a look there.

Have you taken a look at your competitors and the pages they get backlinks from yet?
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org
For me it works fine to find free options (most of the times).

I know this one is good, but very hard to get into as not many sites qualify.
Other than that I am not sure how many more out there would classify as Free AND Quality.
Although there are good sites out there that you have to pay for, paying is not a sign of being bad, just like free is not a sign of good.
If money is the issue then this a completely different story,
But if it is just that you do not like paid directories, then in my opinion look at the directories on more factors other than that..
Last Cache data?
Do they rank for their own brand name?
Are they a PR 0? (Bad sign)
Are they laden with Adsense and Affiliate links? (Bad Sign)
Do they serve a purpose other than another directory in the thousands of directories?
Are the sites all properly categorized?
Do they allow bidding? (Bad sign)
Do they allow all sites? or do they have strict rules on Pharmaceutical, Gambling, Drugs ect....
This is just a few things to look at
hope this helps

How to handle pre-existing backlinks on new site.
Hi - We built a new site on a URL that had previously been used. We are noticing a lot of spammy backlinks pointing to our current site and ending up on a 404 page. Any recommendations on how to handle this?

Do links from such sites as TripAdvisor give any weight or support for SEO
And what about other sites like quora or other niche forums/blogs where one might leave answers, with a link to their profile, which has a link back to the owner's website? _Cindy

Is it safe to submit the same article to multiple sites?
Hello, I am just getting into SEO and I need some guidance with article submissions. I have read in many different places that submitting articles to other sites (EzineArticles, Digg, Etc.) is a great way to build links back to your site. My question is, can I submit articles already posted on our site to these sites or is it best to write new articles?

How does this site rank higher than a seemingly better one??
Ok, I'm really trying to wrap my self around all this SEO stuff. Right when I think I'm grasping it, I come across something like this. When running a keyword difficulty report for the term "essay editing", the top two results are: www.papercheck.com/essay-editing.html www.gradesaver.com/essay-editing/ The first result has a PA of 37, 2 linking page domains, DA of 48, and 197 root linking domains. The second has a PA of 65, 32 linking page domains, DA of 68, and 2,572 root linking domains. What the heck is going on here!?!? I can't understand it. I checked anchor text and that doesn't appear to be it. The only thing I can find is that the papercheck has a link from a site (marketwire) with a DA of 90 while the #2 guy's highest linking domain has a DA of 60. However, I have a really hard time wrapping my head around this considering the total linking domain stats compared to one another. Any insight is much appreciate... this is frustrating trying to grasp these situations! Thanks!

Linking strategy between my own sites
Hi, I have one main site, let's call it food.com I also have 10 smaller sites, let's call them mexicanfood.com, indianfood.com, italianfood.com etc food.com is on its own separate dedicated server the 10 smaller sites are all on a shared IP in hostgator I don't want Google to think that I have created the 10 sites for only purpose of creating links to each other. So, would you recommend that all those 10 sites link to each other? or should there be no interlinking within those 10 same IP domains? What about linking from those 10 sites to my main site? How should I structure my own backlinks not to get penalized by Google ?

Site stuck on 2nd page on Google - how can it improve?
Hi I am working on a site http://www.harrisbassett.co.uk that for search terms such as 'Chartered Accountants Swansea' appears near the top of the 2nd page of Google. When looking at what is listed on the 1st page for 'Chartered Accountants Swansea' I would appreciate any advice/guidance on what else could be done to give the site a final push to get on the 1st page of search results. Over the past 2 weeks I have been building inbound links from local citation sites yelp, qype etc along with sites from competitor analysis via opensiteexplorer. Looking at the sites that are on the 1st page I cant understand why many of them are ranking higher than me? Any insight and plan of attack would be most appreciated from any search experts on the forum. Many Thanks

Which Directory Sites to Choose?
Hi All I am a newbie to SEO and have a quick Q. Assuming that appropriate steps would be to; a) Ensure all onsite matters are are correct, title tags, meta descriptions, redirects, canonical issues. b) Submit to Directories c) Build Links I am approaching step b) Which Directories are worth submitting to? For those which require payment, how can I decide which are value for money or should I just use SEOMOZ list of links and assume that theyre worth the $50 - $100 if my higher ranking competitors have links from these directories. Also, can this be looked opon as grey/black hat 'buying of links'? Thank you Sean www.pretavoir.co.uk
