If you have a picture of the link profile you are trying to build (usually based on competitor analysis) then that helps guide you.
However my one guiding principal has always been to try not to be overly reliant on too few tactics. That probably means I've missed out on some easy wins over the years. However it also means that I have sites that have been sitting at the top of their industry results for over a decade, never leaving page 1.
Mix it up. Find something that works - then find something else. No reason why articles can't be part of that, but if you are producing that content anyway then why not put some aside for guest posting? If you are researching guest posting opportunities why not see what else those sites are looking for?

I don't believe it helps as much, no. Particularly as the lowest quality end.
I think that a small part of that is algo based, but really that a lot of the article directories have been devalued as a result of algo change - so have less juice to pass.
However it's still a way to get links, with anchors you control, from a diverse range of IPs. Hard to ignore that.

Hi mat,
Thanks mate - much apprciated..
Do you mean that article submission to help with SEO does not help that much anymore??

Hi Gareth,
There is a pretty comprehensive list here, that also shows follow/nofollow status of links, Google PR and alexa ranking: http://www.vretoolbar.com/articles/directories.php
I'd imagine you'll find something there!
In this post-panda world the benefit from article submissions is slightly harder to reap, but it's still there. I'm favouring dealing in smaller numbers on sites where you can build more of a profile. Plenty of those in that list.
Hope it helps.

Community Discussion: Can 10x content be short-form content?
In his (intentionally very short) post on Tuesday, Rand makes the case that long-form content isn't necessarily great content: "Rather than applying a tactic like long-form content universally or setting length as the bar (or even a metric) for greatness, we instead match our content to our audience's needs and our business/personal goals. 700 more words will not help you reach your goals any more than 7 more words. Create content that helps people. Do it efficiently. Never write an ultimate guide where a single image could more powerfully convey the same value. Trust me; your audience and your bottom line will thank you." I think this is something we all struggle with as online marketers, in one way or another. As someone who casually consumes online content on a regular basis, this also resonates with me on a personal level. I'm curious, what are your hesitations with focusing on shorter-form content that packs a wallop, and what excites you about it? Can you think of any examples of content you've come across that you consider 10x short-form content?

Wordpress Old Articles date - Update or Not
Hey there! Been reading around and I believe that there isn't a perfect answer to this question, but I surely want to know your opinion. It's a fact that google likes new content but also updated content, so whats your position concerning the wordpress articles. Meaning, when I decide to update articles from 2011 on its content, should I also update the date? If I make a search and an article from 2011 will be shown, its unlikely that I will click on it... So that you can understand my point.

How to Get Rid of Duplicate Content Captured on Article Lists
We have a ton of articles and blog posts on our site. Currently, we display summary lists of articles that contain the first paragraph of the article in the summary list. However, in my reports, this is coming back as duplicate content with the full article itself. How do I fix this? Ex: article main page- http://www.robots.com/articles/10 First article on that page- http://www.robots.com/articles/viewing/grippers-for-robots (which shows up as duplicate content with the main artilce page). With our blogs, we have the most recent 5 blogs (in the same summary format) listed on our main blog page. We then have categories that people can sort by. But again, this is causing us duplicate content because those pages show the first paragraph of the blogs related to that category. Ex: blog main page- http://www.robots.com/blog. First blog listed on that page- http://www.robots.com/blog/viewing/robots-and-automation-bringing-jobs-back-to-the-united-states (which then shows as duplicate content with the main blog page). And then you can also select categories to see related topics: http://www.robots.com/blog/category/buying-a-robot which is showing as duplicate content also. Help! How can I prevent this? Thanks! Removing and resubmitting an article to another blog
I received a guest post earlier from an SEO company. I have published it, and it's been indexed in Google. Now the person wants me to remove the guest post, probably because they already have a guest post with a link pointing to the same client on my blog. I don't mind removing it, but are their any negative aspects in republishing that same article on another blog? Would it be a mistake to remove that article from my blog?

Article Distribution - Duplicate content or not?
Many SEO's disagree on this subject so I wanted to see what everyone thinks. Producing an article and then distributing to multiple article directories. In the eyes of Google is this considered spam(duplicate content) or it is not? As I understand unique content is good SEO. However, I also understand that visibility of the content on multiple sites is very important. What do youthink?
