Changing Servers + Effect on SEO
-
Hi,
I am currently with a very slow server. Our website takes quite a while to load, FTP is very slow and content changes with Wordpress are slow because even the database connection takes a lot of time.
However, my website ranks very well. Traffic has doubled in the last year. Our domain has been registered with this company for over 10 years. I am wondering if changing to a different hosting provider would have an effect on my rankings due to the change in IP.
-
It's not my website, it's the server but thanks for the advice!
-
I second that. You need to look into optimizing your website. In most cases it's not a server/hosting company issue. Check their main website or other sites on the same server / IP and see if they have the same issue as yours. But to directly answer your question, no it would not impact as long as the country of the hosting company stays the same. I hope that helps.

I use WP Super Cache but it hasn't helped.

Like the other responses said, moving servers or hosting companies won't affect your rankings or search performance. That is assuming everything else stays the same during the move obviously.
EGOL's response is right though - it may not be the fault of the host. Have you talked to your host about the server? Many times there are configuration changes that can speed things up, especially if you are on a dedicated or VPS environment.
When it comes to your code, since you are in WordPress, have you tried the Super Cache plugin? I've had success with this to help speed up WP sites, even on slow, shared hosting environments. Here is a link to that: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/
The other tool I've had some luck with when it comes to load issues is Cloud Flare. You might want to check that out as well. Here is the link to that: http://www.cloudflare.com/

If you simply move a site from Server A to Server B or from Hosting Company A to Hosting Company B there should be no change in your rankings.
Sometimes slowness is not the fault of the server or the host. There are lots of things that you can do to speed up your site. These include: optimizing images, removing code bloat, caching pages on the server, reducing the number of files called per page, and much more.
We cut average load time by nearly two seconds per page by doing the above.
If you are calling in widgets, images or data from other domains they can really add to your load time.

Hi Mango Man,
If your hosting provider is in the same country there shouldn't be any negative affects as long as you do the technical part right.
I've moved sites more times than I can remember and never seen any negative affects.
I've attached a video from Matt Cutts explaining this.
Hope this helps!

WordPress Themes and SEO
I am helping out a client with updating their website.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | cangelmarketer
The theme they currently have hasn't been updated in ages (I am going to guess years). Would there be a difference in updating to the most recent version of their theme and changing them to a completely different theme? Or because they update in the current theme is so large anyway, it won't make a difference in terms of SEO. The reason I ask is that they don't know their Themeforest details to log in and download the most recent version of the theme, so they would have to re-purchase it, and with the hosting, they have access to a range of themes includes in their package. Webjaguar SEO shortcomings
Hey All. I have a client whose ecommerce site is build in Webjaguar. Does anyone have experience with this platform. It appears to be loaded with technical SEO challenges (duplicate content, weird URLs, etc). Interestingly, when I Google "webjaguar SEO challenges" and things like that....nothing comes up. Suspicious, methinks. I appreciate any thoughts from SEO folks. Thanks!

SEO Monthly Strategy
Out of curiosity, do any Mozzers use a monthly spreadsheet style SEO strategy that is set on a daily basis like this: Day 1 - purchase/write 3 articles
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | fertilefrog
Day 2 - comment on 5 blogs
Day 3 - upload article 1
Day 4 - directory submissions
Day 5 - blog promotion
Day 6 - etc..... If so, do you find this to be the most effective way of working, with this rigid structure?0 -
Is a Dedicated Server a Worthwhile Investment?
Greeting MOZ Community: Our site is hosted on a virtual private server. Apparently there are dozens of other web sites hosted on the same server. The performance is usually pretty fast, with the site downloading in 1-3 seconds. However, a few times per month, the performance slows down, to say 5-6 seconds. Please see the attached image. I suspect this may have something to do with the other web sites on the server. Currently we pay about $60/month. A dedicated server would cost about $120/month. Would site performance be more consistent on a dedicated server? Could we enjoy potential SEO benefits by having our own server, i.e. could we rank slightly higher if the speed was more consistent and the performance slightly faster? Thanks, Alan 6D7kK61

SEO issues with Magento
Hi Everyone, We use Magento CMS for our site and we are having a frustrating time resolving our SEO issues. The site was very poorly managed in years past and in the past year I have redesigned and cleaned up many things. However we are recently having trouble with indexing and keyword ranking. Issue #1: Our main keyword ranking has dropped quite a bit while our other less important keywords have steadily risen. I suspect a very strict robots.txt implemented back in early January may have been the culprit. We have since been modifying it with out much luck. Many of our pages are still blocked. 12/05/12 : ranked 12th 1/09/13: ranked 19th 1/16/13: ranked 35th Now: out of top 50 (52nd) Issue #2: Not a single image is being indexed. We are 0 for 582 according to Webmaster tools. Not sure why... Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated as I have great determination and interest in learning the correct way to fix/do this. SEO for an exponentially growing site?
Hey Mozers! I was having a quick chat with a friend the other day on doing SEO for a site that grows in page size at an exponential rate and was just wondering how you would go about optimizing it? The example that we used would be a site that allowed users to upload videos and then have people vote on two videos against each other. So, if there are 100 uploaded videos and each of them are pared up with the other 99 to create a unique voting/battle page which has it's own unique URL, the site can get very large, VERY quickly. Meaning if just one more video is uploaded there would be How exactly would you go about optimizing the site? My biggest area of confusion would be generating sitemaps. I'm aware of best practices with large sitemaps (i.e. having a sitemap of sitemaps, not going over 50k in entries per sitemap etc..) But, how would you go about creating the sitemaps for this website if it's growing at an exponential rate, if at all? If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I'll clarify it. Thanks! 😃 **TL;DR How would you optimize a site that grows at an exponential rate? **

Changing Domain / Site Name - An SEO Nightmare?
My company will be changing its name and moving to a new domain in about a month. What can I do from an SEO perspective to get ready for the big move? Do I just need to 301 redirect all my URLs to their new corresponding pages? Thanks!

Does font size affect SEO?
In the eyes of Google, would the font text size of say a news article affect SEO? For example, a slightly larger font being easier to read by those with bad eyes? Accessibility? If so, what size would be ideal? 10, 12, 14? Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
