Moz didn't shut down, but if you're asking about temporarily shutting down a site for maintenance, it's recommended to use a 503 error code to avoid negatively impacting SEO ¹. According to Google's Matt Cutts, short downtime won't affect search rankings, but extended downtime might ¹.
