International SEO
-
My client just launched a german version of their site:
English Version:
www.domain.com/en/....Germain Version:
www.domain.com/de/....Is there a best practice to get the new section of the site indexed in www.google.de? Are you able to submit a different sitemap to each Google domain? How do you go about doing keyword research, its got to be different search trends than google.com, right?
A am complete beginner when it comes to international SEO so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Regards - Kyle

We are fortunate enough to have a native speaker translating for us. Thank you for all your help!
-
Yep, do try to get them to translate the content by a native speaker, not by machine. And optimize like any other page. The new title tags (because of the language) should start showing for searches in that language.
-
Thank you for the awesome and detailed reply. Spoke to the client, they where not looking to target the country specifically. This was just a translation since a large portion of there client base is out of europe (germany specifically).
So the sell barcode scanners for production lines. For their english version of the site we target the different types (camera barcode, laser barcode, etc). So we would optimize the german pages for the same keyword just in the different language?
Thank you for all the help!

Hi Kyle!
Before I go into this, let me explain one thing. Search engines operate by country, not language. So if your client has made a German language version of their site, a duplicate of their English site, then it should not just target Germany. There are many other countries and people that speak German. Rather, I would submit a sitemap to google of the german content only and let them crawl the content in German. The indexation should raise over time naturally, and if you track that subfolder in Analytics, you should be able to see what countries are landing on the German language content naturally.
If you wanted to launch a site for the German people (citizens of Deutschland), you should recommend that the content and business be developed for that country and either launched as a subfolder or their domain.de acquired. Only if the content is different because different targeting is required should you launch a site (or area) just for a country. In terms of the TLD, this is simply because if you launch a new domain and target to the country, that is a whole other site that will need link building. That's a lot of work. If you launched to target with a subfolder, you could actually target with WMT to the country Germany, but again, the content needs to be different than the main site.
So ask them what the point is, just to translate or to target Germany. That changes what you should do. But I think it's just the language, so I say let it happen, track indexation and the language subfolder in Analytics and make sure the SEs understand that it's german language content. That'll be shown to users in any country that wish their content to be in German.

How do you select which keywords to push in SEO?
Hi Guys Selecting the right keywords that a website can realistically rank for is a key to gain top rankings relatively quick. I am just curious to hear how you guys do it (the methodology) when selecting which keywords to push? I mean you need to check the competition for each keyword as well so how to check this quickly to see what we realistically can rank for? Cheers John

Technorati - SEO Benefit?
Would listing my content / blogs on Technorati have an SEO benefit? A few months ago, I did a piece of analysis on our competitiors' link profiles and then ranked the linking root domains to get the highest scores. Technorati was one of the domains with a high domain authority and is also relevant to our business. On the other hand, I've seen on whiteboard Friday's that directories are losing their importance. My gut feeling is that this is something that is worth doing because it is easy to implement but that we shouldn't expect amazing returns in terms of traffic / page authority scores. Your opinions would be much appreciated 🙂

Is there an SEO benefit to purchasing domains for a website?
Greetings Mozzers, I wanted to see if someone could clarify the power of domains for me a bit. Is there an SEO benefit in purchasing fresh domains for a specific website? Something that would effect certain metrics like parking keyword domains to pages that target that keyword? I'm not talking about buying pre-existing domains that have value and are for sale. I'm talking about newly registered domains. Thanks for any advice/clarification.

Crazy SEO question (maybe I'm missing something?)
OK - so one of our customers just called us and told us an interesting story: A local SEO company called her yesterday to try to sell their services to her. She's in the process of starting SEO services with us, so she told them she wasn't interested. The sales guy told her that they were better (without even asking who she was currently using) and asked her for a term that she'd like to rank higher for. She said she'd like to rank higher for "spray in bedliners northern ky" and he said "Gotcha, call you tomorrow" He called back just now and told her to look at Google. She's now ranking number one for that term. He didn't have access to her site, so he wasn't able to change anything on her site. He won't tell her what he did, and told her it was legitimate - but it seems to me that with only off-site tactics, it'd be nearly impossible to white-hat her site to number one overnight... Any ideas what he's doing? First of all, we want to be able to tell her what he's doing, because she's curious. More importantly, we want to be sure he's not doing anything black-hat that's going to hurt our client's site. Thanks for your help, Mozzers!

SEO Strategy Questions on an International Domain
I'm going to try not to get too wordy with my question. Any help that could be provided would be much appreciated! We recently purchased a Germany-based company. They were using two domains (possibly more) for their website. Domain1 and Domain2. I'm sure for duplicate content reasons, only Domain1 ranked well. We in the US wanted to use Domain2, as it contains the brand name and would add legitimacy to our website in the US. Problem is that they also wanted to use it in Germany. So we split it using GeoDNS. Any international traffic goes to their server. Any US/Canada traffic goes to ours. From what I've read, we in the US should have the advantage here in terms of getting our pages indexed on Google, because Google will crawl from the US. So to Google, it should be as if we've changed all of our URLs. The problem is that Google has not recognized these changes for our homepage and it has been about a month since I submitted a sitemap and changed our geo-targeting to the US in Webmaster tools. They've picked up other pages of ours, but the Title and Meta descriptions for the homepage are in German still. We also rank about 23rd for our own brand name. Bing and Yahoo have picked up the changes without issue and we rank 2nd for our brand name. My other issue is that the old distributor in the US (whom we have replaced) is ranking first for our brand name. I'm working on increasing our inbound links, but is there anything else I could be doing to jump ahead of them in the rankings? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!

Starting SEO
Hi everyone, I am new to SEO basically learning as I go and trying to catch up on all of the information needed to successfully move a website up the search engine ranks. The website I am trying to optimize is www.luxurylifestylevacationhomes.com/. Right now I have determined which keywords I want to use, I have saturated them into the website in an organic way and have submitted the sites to various engines, also I have created a Facebook fan page which has 606 active monthly users in it's first month ( I don't know if that's a great number), as well as started writing a blog where I am putting links to the page in each relevant blog. My question has 3 parts 1. what else should I be doing to improve my ranking? 2. how do I find quality relevant websites that want to link exchange? 3. What is the best way to really get volume/ quality links to a relatively unknown site?Any advice or Ideas help and are very appreciated. Thanks
