    Hey there,

So I'm sure this question must of been asked before but I was curious of whether or not it truly does carry some weight when it comes to SEO.

As an example, lets say my domain name was "kokkle.com" if I left comments (non-spam comments) on articles that were related to the some-what the same niche. And as the comment name I left it as Kokkle would that seem like your commenting just for SEO purposes?

I want to leave actually good comments that will carry on discussions within various sites/blogs but I'm afraid to put my domain name on the comments.

What do you think? Is blog commenting a good form of building backlinks? If so, how should one go about it?

    Thanks

Thanks for the input. So what type of links would be counted? Guest blog links perhaps?

          Hi Savio,

I think that you will find this whiteboard Friday very interesting in relation to comment marketing - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/comment-marketing-as-an-inbound-tactic-whiteboard-friday

In terms of links carrying any weight, I think it is important to think about quality and building trust in a community before posting links. I would also be very careful with anchor text. What you have to remember is that since Google's Penguin update link profiles have been under more scrutiny than ever so having some blog comments from appropriate blogs in your niche will carry weight. If a link is no followed then it won't pass link juice and so help add to your authority but what you have to look at is what other value it passes in terms of referral traffic, recognition etc.

People have tended to stay away from using blog comments as a form of link building because this leads to spammy practises of just posting for links sake. If you have a lot of anchor text from random blogs then it will stick out like a saw thumb when Google looks at your link profile and you are likely to get hit. However if you use comments properly and it is appropriate to link to your site occasionally then you are more likely to add value to your site in the eyes of the search engines...

As you say you are leaving good comments and adding value so this is a natural practice, but purely looking at it as a good form of link building then I think you need to rethink things. As Rand says; using comments correctly will help you build authority and gain recognition in these communities which will help with exposure to your site and work. From this you will pick up links naturally.

_"_You are not, not trying to build links. No, not directly anyway. Eventually, over time, one of the goals is hopefully to get some links, maybe to get a blogger to mention you, point over to your stuff, not to build profiles, which, essentially, is just a form of link spam or of reputation management where you're building all these profiles across different sites, and not to comment without adding value." A quote from Rand's WBF from the link above.

I believe there is indeed talk of Google factoring in nofollow links from reputable sources (Wikipedia for example) however I'm almost certain that blog comments won't be included within this.

As far as I know a nofollow link will not give any link value. Regardless the site it's on.

Doesn't Google now count some nofollow links from high authority sites? Or am I wrong on this belief?

Blog and forum comments containing links are almost universally rel="nofollow" meaning you'll get no value from an SEO point of view.

Course that does precisely nothing to discourage the blog spammers.

AdultBlock scam? Is there a downside to doing this instead....?

So our IT guy just sent me an email from our domain registrar, encouraging us to sign up for an annual 'adultblock' service. For those that aren't sure what this is... Adultblock represents a straightforward mechanism that enables qualifying organizations to block the registration of any domain that falls under their trademark. This includes unlimited variants based on the holder's labels. Instead of worrying about registering and managing many different adult related TLDs, it is possible to block trademarked domains under all four TLDs for up to ten years through just one action. Unfortunately, this service is not cheap, and I'm starting to wonder about the 'downside' of NOT doing it. Does anyone know if just purchasing the adult related TLDs for our domain, and then just sitting on them, would have any sort of negative effect on our SEO?  Alternatively, could we just set an alert for when / if those domains ever get purchased and then just disavow those sites in search console? Thanks!!

Changed the trailing slashes - how it effect SEO?

Hi,  I'm doing a project called https://www.machinerygate.com/ Due to trailing slashes issues, our developer requests to remove the trailing slashes from the URLs. However, the homepage with and without trailing slashes the same effect right. How about the inner pages affect SEO. Because we just started to do SEO and not even one single link of Inner pages done with the process. However, for example, the URL for https://www.machinerygate.com/machinery/cranes/ is before with trailing slashes and it is on google indexed with trailing slashes. Due to some bug, google inspection tool has been not functioning nowadays and I'm finding hard to index the new URL without trailing slashes https://www.machinerygate.com/machinery/cranes to index on Google. If this gets indexed, how the URL with trailing slashes will be, does it automatically redirect to URL without trailing slashes or not? Please share your thought about this concern.

Why not just use an alias if the only change is a different domain Name?

We are rebranding our store with a new name. We have purchased a NewDomainName.  Can I just make the "Old Domain Name" an alias for the "NewDomainName"? The site will not change in any other way than having a new logo.  This is an e-commerce site with over 100 categories of artisan made products.  So once we move the site, the old domain will be empty. Thank you Stephen

How does the background on my product photos impact SEO - step and repeat vs. plain background

I have a new e-commerce site and I'm focused on optimizing it for SEO. If I am taking product photos, will having a step-and-repeat (background with our logo repeated) in the background of the product impact how the images are scanned by Google? In other words, would I benefit from having a plain background behind my item shots vs. a backdrop with our logos all across it? I don't want Google to think I'm spamming my logo across all our items, but also want our photos to be recognized as ours. I want to gain SEO from my effort and definitely not hurt it! Thanks!

Backlink Badges - Good or Bad

One of my free tools for creating web pages automatically inserts a back-link to my home page as a footer, or 'badge' from the free web pages it creates. Hence there are tens of thousands of low quality sites out there linking back to my home page. While this was great ten years ago, Google looks on things differently these days. So the question is, will Google penalize me for this? Does the negative outweigh the positive - should I remove the insertion of back-link badges from the product? Thanks, Peter

Do you have to pay Yext at this point?

Over the past several months it seems more and more local listing sites are now using Yext for their listing information.  Some of these include Local.com, American Towns, Hot Frog, etc.  I'm not even seeing a way to claim listings anymore with these sites without going through Yext. If Yext has the wrong information, is there any way to correct these listings without paying Yext?  I used to be able to claim listings with the actual listing sites.  It was more labor intensive, but I didn't have to pay Yext $500/year.  I could pay an assistant a lot less and they could do it.  It seems that option is going away. Do any of you know of another way of correcting listings without using Yext (or at least without paying Yext)?  If not, do you know if Yext has an enterprise solution for SEOs so we don't have to pay the $500 for every client? Thanks. Kurt Steinbrueck

                    1 Website, 2 Business Names, 2 Locations

I took on a dentist office as an SEO client. They have 1 website, 2 business names and 2 locations. Each location has it's own business name. They are both within the same city as well. I'm not exactly sure where to start with them since they have 2 different business names. If it were 1 name with multiple locations I would just create a Contact Us page for each one, but is that the best thing to do when the location names are different? Should I create a different website for each location or is that smart because then they are competing against each other? Any help from the community on the direction I should take would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
