Should I replace underscores in page file names with hyphens?
-
Many of the 1000s of pages at our Web store that were established several years ago but still relevant today have underscores separating words in page file names. For example: http://www.audiobooksonline.com/whats_new_compact_disc_audiobooks_audio_books.html
Should I replace the underscores with hyphens like this:
http://www.audiobooksonline.com/whats-new-compact-disc-audiobooks-audio-books.html
or should I duplicate pages with underscores using hyphens and have the older pages with underscores 304 re-directed to the new pages with hyphens?

No worries. And, I agree with you on the drawbacks. I know I've made changes like this before and caused more problems than I think I had in the first place

Shoot, I just realized I linked to the same video. Thumbs up for that.

Hi Larry,
Truth be told - I would leave them alone.
It's true that Google treats underscores differently than dashes - or at least they did as recently as 2011. In this Webmaster Video, Matt Cutts explains that underscores act as a "joiner" - joining the two words together.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=AQcSFsQyct8
But he also states that it's a minor effect, that's it's not worth changing if you don't have to.
I happen to agree with Matt on this. Changing your urls and/or redirecting them usually doesn't cause much problems, but in certain cases it can have a negative effect on your SEO, resulting in a loss of traffic and rankings. We generally advise folks not to change your URLs unless you have to - and in this case you don't have to.
CAVEAT: The only situation I would actually advise you to make this change is if you were overhauling your website/CMS and had to change your URL structure anyway. In this situation it would make sense, and you would want to redirect the old URLs via 301 to the new structure.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

Check out the attached video.
If it were me, I would look at the link profile of the pages that could potentially change and, assuming I didn't find something that told me to just keep it as is, I'd make the change and then 301 all of the underscored URLs to the rewritten URLs.

Will Reducing Number of Low Page Authority Page Increase Domain Authority?
Our commercial real estate site (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com) contains about 800 URLs. Since 2012 the domain authority has dropped from 35 to about 20. Ranking and traffic dropped significantly since then. The site has about 791 URLs. Many are set to noindex. A large percentage of these pages have a Moz page authority of only "1". It is puzzling that some pages that have similar content to "1" page rank pages rank much better, in some cases "15". If we remove or consolidate the poorly ranked pages will the overall page authority and ranking of the site improve? Would taking the following steps help?: 1. Remove or consolidate poorly ranking unnecessary URLs?

2. Update content on poorly ranking URLs that are important?
3. Create internal text links (as opposed to links from menus) to critical pages? A MOZ crawl of our site's URLs is visible at the link below. I am wondering if the structure of the site is just not optimized for ranking and what can be done to improve it. Links / Top Pages by Page Authority ==> pages shouldnt be there
I checked my site links and top pages by page authority. What i have found i dont understand, because the first 5-10 pages did not exist!! Should know that we launched a new site and rebuilt the static pages so there are a lot of new pages, and of course we deleted some old ones. I refreshed the sitemap.xml (these pages are not in there) and upload it in GWT. Why those old pages appear under the links menu at top pages by page authority?? There's a website I'm working with that has a .php extension. All the pages do. What's the best practice to remove the .php extension across all pages?
Client wishes to drop the .php extension on all their pages (they've got around 2k pages). I assured them that wasn't necessary. However, in the event that I do end up doing this what's the best practices way (and easiest way) to do this? This is also a WordPress site. Thanks.

Links to Facebook pages
I would like to ask if anyone has any knowledge regarding linking to a company's facebook page. I have built a few links to a client's facebook page in an effort to have it rank better in SERPs. I just learned that unlike twitter and linkedin, it is apparently not possibly to directly link to facebook pages. At least it is not possible from a search engine's perspective. If you follow any facebook page link while you are not logged into facebook, you are redirected to the facebook home page. I can't think of any way around this obstacle. I'd love some clever solution such as providing a URL which includes a basic dummy facebook login but there is nothing I am aware of to achieve this result. Does anyone have any ideas on this topic?
