Our ranking strategy - what to add and would it work?
-
Hello everyone, this is actually my first time to ask here so please be kind to me.
I won't consider myself an expert on SEO, I originally studied to become a writer. I've been learning SEO for the past 1 1/2 years but recently I've encountered a wall. One of our clients wanted to rank high on Google in DIFFERENT countries. So far here are what we're doing:
- Keyword research + integrating keywords in content
- Site optimization (inserting keywords on meta tags)
- Blog development (10+ times a month with use of keywords)
- Linkbuilding (Local directory submission, submission on free PR sites, making sure client is listed on their partners' pages)
I've always thought developing more content would help the site rank higher. Should we build links for a specific page that has our main keyword so that it would also rank higher? Or building links for the root domain just as good?
Your comments and suggestions will surely help! Thanks!

Thank you so much Mash!

Hi Keri, we insert the keywords on the content of the meta tags - meta title and description. Sorry for the confusion.
-
Can you elaborate on the inserting keywords in meta tags? Google doesn't look at the meta keywords tag. Maybe I'm not mis-understanding?
-
Yes, blog commenting would work BUT spend your time searching for ONLY relevant industry blogs. Again, number is not important. You have to post relevant and useful comments on relavant high quality blogs and they could add to your efforts. Also, make sure you do not comment on posts which are just space fillers and/or trash. The posts you comment on must be written for people and not for spam. If the post looks like junk or spun, just ignore and move on.
-
Thank you Mash and Chris!
I see, so I'll probably do away with posting to press release sites. But would you agree blog commenting would work? The problem with the website I'm handling is that it offers business services - facility building, data construction services, investment consultation, etc. I agree, interesting content that would be shared would be great, but the content will be interesting to CEO/managers who probably wouldn't bother to share as they're busy enough. I wanted linkbuilding strategy that would be effective and work fast.
Agree also on using social media and guest blogging. We'll definitely do those.
Thanks again!
-
I agree with Mash. Free PR directories and link directories won't give your site much value. I would add the following:
-Guest Blogging
-Social Media
-Create one really good resource such as an e-book or e-mail course or something, and then tell people about it
-
Of the the 4 activities you have listed the first 3 are ok but I would not bother too much with the 4th one. Link directories and Free PR sites are not worth getting links from. In fact, they may even hurt your rankings.
You should focus on getting organic links to the internal pages and the best way for this to happen is to write unique and interesting content. If you are just creating 10+ posts as space fillers with 500+ words, then you are probably wasting your time. Instead you should focus on 2 or 3 high quality posts that are well researched and interesting.
Do not go for "building links" - instead focus on creating interesting content such as infographics, industry related white papers or cheat sheets etc that people will feel like sharing or linking back to.

Has anyone heard or worked with penwarriors.co
I had someone from penwarriors.co approach me about putting some content on my site. The content is good. It's unique. It's very relevant and any links out are reasonable. But when I started to look into it, they seem to be churning out a hell of a lot of content for the companies they're doing outreach for and the companies themselves don't seem to be very active on social. I can't find the person they are attributing a guest blog to and I can't find the person that I've been communicating with on linkedin etc. Something doesn't feel right. Any ideas? Simon

Will Testimonial Backlinks Work?
Hey guys, I am pretty new to the whole SEO thing. I did have an idea though. There are things that I like, IE restaurants in my neighbourhood. If I did a testimonial for say, my local pizza place that I really like, with a backlink to my site, would that be useful. IE "Jimmys pizza makes the best pizza in the neighbourhood by far

Ranking Riddle: Too many anchor text links, or not enough of the right ones???
This question is about one of my ecommerce sites (www.BestDryingRack.com) which is ranking really well for one of it's money words, and not at all for the other. See the attached screenshot for a quick overview of the riddle we are facing.... Looking at the "Anchor Text" tab in my MOZ Campaign or in Open Site Explorer would lead you to think that I have WAY too many links with my #1 money phrase. (clothes drying rack, or laundry drying rack, as they are synonyms). And since my product page doesn't rank at all for that keyword, that's what I thought too. (My home page does show up on page 3 or 4 when Googling clothes drying rack) On the other hand, my #2 money phrase (umbrella clothesline, or outdoor umbrella clothesline) has it's product page ranking quite well in the middle of the first page of Google results. Digging deeper into the links spreadsheet from Open Site Explorer shows that most of the links are NOFOLLOW (which means they don't really count, right?) As the screenshot shows, here is the breakdown of links that count: FOLLOW links with Brand and URL anchor text totals 17 FOLLOW links with #1 money phrase anchor text totals 10, with only 1 to proper product page FOLLOW links with #2 money phrase anchor text totals 3, with all 3 to proper product page So the riddle is... Can we improve the ranking of the #1 money phrase by just getting a small number of matching anchor text links to the proper page? (making it like #2's situation) Or do we also need to get rid of some of the 9 links with the #1 anchor text that are pointing to the home page? (since the home is outranking the proper product page for this phrase) BDR-anchors-040614.jpg

Maintaining or improving keyword ranking
I started a second website recently and it is doing very well. I am on the first page for a competitive keyword - spot 5 according to Moz. It is actually a category page that is ranking so well which is a surprise to me as I have read many times that I should deindex category pages due to duplicate content! My questions: 1. How do I get backlinks to a CATEGORY page?! I have been able to get backlinks to certain posts because my website is a deal blog and other deal blogs give me credit for popular deals by linking to my post. 2. How can I maintain this high ranking? Of course I want in spot 3 but this website isn't even 2 months old so I know I should be patient. At this point, I just want to stay on the first page. What is the best way to do that? I am about to fill out the SEO stuff for the category page which I haven't done yet. Thanks!

Can You Rank Without Backlinking?
With all the new emphasis on on-page metrics and social metrics, would it be possible to rank well without putting much emphasis on backlinking if your content is significantly better than the rest of the ranking pages? Say #1 to #5 are pages of 500 word generic content. We come in with 2,000 word specific, high-quality content. Can we get by without spending as much time/energy on backlinking? Would the on-page factors make up for it, or has the game not changed that much?

Ranking dropped by 7 positions for many keywords
Hey, Since yesterday my ranking dropped by in average 7 positions for most keywords. iIm not 100% sure whats the matter. I rank under the top3 for a quite comptetitive keyword since several months. During the last 4 weeks it wasn't that stady (between 2 - 4) because the competition is using an aggressiv link building method.

I'm adding constantly new content and the link building is also quite natural. Maybe I linked the same sites from some of my blogs too often... and Google may see it as a "link network". I experience the same for two of those sites. Maybe I should remove those links? Any suggestions? Thanks!0
