ECommerce & Reviews when generated by 3rd Party uses Javascript
-
Hi all,
I am trying to optimize our product pages and I know one of the important factors is showing customer reviews. While we have plenty of reviews to show they are collected by a third party (Shopper Approved) and the way we have been told to display them on our pages is via a Javascript. My question is, is this sufficient for search engines to be able to crawl and interpret the Javascript or are we missing out on user generated content since it is displayed via Javascript. If so are there best practices or recommendations to help us?
Thank you!
Dinesh

Dinesh,
Go look at the code for any site using BazaarVoice and you'll see that they have found a way to do this. If Shopper Approved doesn't think this is important enough to fix then perhaps you should look into another review vendor.

Everett

Hi Everett,
Below is the response I got back from the owner of Shopper Approved, it really does not make much sense to me as I am not a developer but is what he is saying below hold true that it is indeed difficult to implement?
Thanks,
DineshHi Dinesh,
I talked to our main programmer here in the office, and adding a noscript tag with some testimonials in it is easy. The issue is that it is very difficult to change the reviews once they're there, without involving the installation of additional files, additional programming, and testing on the clients end, which opens a huge can of worms.
There's just not an easy way to do it.
We've explored every way we can think of to try and add text reviews to our client's pages dynamically in the past, and javascript is the only cut & paste way to do it universally across all platforms, but the downside is that Google can't read it.
If your programmer has any ideas as to how we can pull it off and make it drop dead simple (cut & paste), then I'm definitely open to it. Otherwise, the next best option is for you to display the reviews via the javascript widget primarily for Social Proof benefits, and then for us to get as many review pages and 5-star ratings indexed in Google as possible to send you as much traffic as we can.
Anyway, let me know if your programmer has any ideas.
Thanks,
Scott

@Dinesh, I had been reading this thread and decided to get Shopper Approved for my clients. I talked to Brendan and he told me all about Shopper Approved. I was comparing ResellerRatings.com, TRUSTPILOT.com, ReviewCentre.co.uk, and Local.viewpoint.com.
Shipper Approved seems to have the most value. Tell Scott Brandley that you are landing him 2 subscribers. I see there is an affiliate link there. Your affiliate commission % is 25% lifetime of the customer.
PM me and I'll have my clients use your affiliate code. We are probably going to sign up next week.

Hi Everett,
I have the good fortune of actually having a relationship with one of the co-owners Scott Brandley since MyFairyTaleBooks was one of the first stores to implement Shopper Approved back in 2009/2010.
So I reached deep into my rolodex and contacted him this afternoon (he answered!) and I gave him the explanation you provided above and he said he had no idea that was the case and he had me write it up and email him so he could pass it over to development to get a fix in place right away! I will keep you posted on how things go, but it sounds promising that they will get it done.
I guess the whole relationship building thing Moz'ers push actually has some merit huh
Thanks again,
-D -
OK so Shopper Approved is one of the review sources used by Google Shopping. That's great! They sound like a really good service. All I would change would be to put the noscript tag in the code with all of the content that appears via the script. Let us know how it goes. If they can fix that issue for you I think I'll keep them in my back pocket in case someone asks for a good review service.
-
Hi again,
So Shopper Approved I believe is 100% legit the way it works is the review is captured at the order confirmation page, meaning once the order is placed and paid for a window pop's up and asks them three basic questions. Then on the backend I have it configured so after 2 weeks (since our products are personalized) we send 3 more questions asking them to rate the delivery, the product and customer service. I do not think there is actually a way to enter a review outside of this process or even manually (I could be wrong!)
If you Google Shopper Approved MyFairyTaleBooks you will see all the pages that they generate and are listed by Google.
Also in the back end system they claim to have a feed / partnership with Google in by which they provide the "Feed" of reviews directly too them. I am not sure how they do this but they make me complete my profile with Store Name, Address, etc
EDIT - Also shows up here for example http://www.google.com/products/seller?hl=en&q=myfairytalebooks&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbo=u&tbm=shop&source=og&zmi=myfairytalebooks.com&sa=X&ei=vP7RUajTG4aH0QGX14HYDQ&ved=0CDYQqQwwAA
Thanks,

I'd like to add that you want to make sure you're going with a company that doesn't hire people to leave fake reviews on your site to populate that content. The Shopper Approved website says that all reviews are from "actual paying customers" so I'm guessing you're ok there.
I looked at the Shopper Approved site and saw this:
"Every rating you collect is added to a static, search engine optimized page, that can show up in Google, Yahoo, and Bing to boost your reputation."
You should find out where that page lives because I couldn't find any review content from several different products in the SERPs, and I didn't see any indexable version of the content in the code on your product pages.
-
Hi Everett,
Thank you for the response just like I suspected I will reach out to SA and see if they will populate a
<noscript>field. </p> <p>Dinesh</p></noscript>
-
The way the page is set up now that content is NOT indexable. The good news is that it isn't indexed on any other domains either. Sometimes these review companies will allow your reviews to be indexed on their domains, but not yours. They claim ignorance, but I think that type of arrangement is downright low. They'd be stealing your content and your traffic.
What I would advise for you to do if you're going to stay with the company is ask them to populate a
<noscript>field with the content contained in the script. This is what BazaarVoice / Power Reviews does, and I've seen it work first-hand. It is a 100% honest and correct use of the noscript tag. The thing with BV/PR is you have to disallow the reviews subdomain from being indexed or you'll have duplicate content on your own subdomain.</p></noscript>

Ecommerce Canonical Question
Hi all, first question (eek) Could I pick the brains of fellow users around an issue we are having with canonical urls on a magento website. At the moment we do not have these enabled as it seems to break our indexing. Cut a long story short, we have thousands of products but haven't rewritten many of the descriptions from the manufacturers yet and so have noindexed all the product pages (freeing them as we go). The goal, for now, is to pull in traffic via the filtering options we have on the site The goal, for now, is to pull in traffic via the filtering options we have on the site. For example, if you go to Dresses, there then are several filtering options which would allow you to choose a colour, shape and material - if you wished to filter that precisely. These filtering options are all crawlable and so we would then have a page that google could index for, for example, Green Lace Maxi Dress. All good there, few people search for specific products and a lot search for types of products so we are covered. To get back to the issue at hand. If we enable the canonical option on our magento plugin it will stop us from being able to target these terms. Whereas the filtering option would create domain.com/dress/green/maxi/lace with the page title of Green Lace Maxi Dress, if we enable the canonical part of the seo plugin the canonical link which would be added to the page would be - instantly removing our ability to rank for longer tail dress related searches (we are not going to compete with the big players on the premium terms, yet!). There are alternative plugins we can buy for magento to add the correct tag, however, if every page's canonical just points back it itself like this, is there really much point spending nearly $1000 on the 4 licences we would need to cover our range of sites. Is it really necessary, in this case, that we have a canonical for the product filtering? Sorry for the long post, hope it made sense. Thanks for any assistance.

Can you use multiple keywords for on page for ranking?
I understand using a keyword (or phrase) and correctly building that into the site structure (URL, Title Tag, body, etc). So, this question is going to be elementary, but I am starting to question myself as I write content. I have a client, for example, that has a new site and a page for Chocolate cakes. Now the other pages they built out are for Cheesecakes, Cupcakes, etc. So we optimized the Chocolate cakes page with our keyword throughout (Getting an A+ on page content grade). But now they are asking me why they can't be found for chocolate eclairs, chocolate fudge cake, devils chocolate cake, double chocolate cake, etc. My first quick answer is that they should build more pages. But am I doing this wrong?

Moving from Local to National Audience - Ecommerce Site
I have an e-commerce site that was optimized for local results. We’ve been receiving traffic from all over the nation so recently we've decided to optimize the site for a more national audience by removing the local business indicators. I have below a list of things that I’ve done, I’m contemplating doing and other various questions. One note I want to make is that we offer installation services – which we would still like to rank locally for. I have done the following: Remove [city] from all of the title tags (except for the installation pages) Removed NAP (name, address, ph#) from site wide footer – I’m not sure if I should have done this. Inserted NAP at the bottom of the body content of the installation pages Questions Right now my installation pages are located in a sub-folder (ex: www.mydomain.com/installation-services). Should I create a sub-domain for installations (ex: city.mydomain.com/installation-services)? My thoughts are that it would make that sub-domain all about our installation services while keeping our root domain focused on our products and not dilute it with installations. However, this sub-domain will have less juicy juice. What should I do with our G+ business page? In the back end of the business G+, there are boxes I can check for “my business has service areas where I visit my customers at their location” and “I serve customers at my business address.” If checked, will these make my site less likely to rank Nationally? We DO have a storefront and we DO visit people to do installations, so I would like these to be checked but not if it hurts my national rankings. There are local “7 pack” results for my main keywords and their installations. So, I would want my root domain to show up locally for “widgets in [city]” and my sub-domain to show up for “widget installation in [city]". Is it against Google’s TOS to create another G+ business page for the sub-domain? Is this even possible? Do I even need to do this or will Google know that I have a sub-domain all about installation and have my site show up in the local results? Is there anything in GWT that I need to make sure to have done? I put the geographic target to United States. Is there anything else? Of course, there is always the option of creating a new domain and optimize it for the installations. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What is the most effective eCommerce product / category structure?
Hi all, We sell musical equipment, and we have been debating about how to structure our website in terms of products and categories. These are our two options: Each category page lists sub-categories _and _all of the products contained within each of these sub-categories, so e.g. the "Guitars" category page would contain links to "Electric Guitars" and "Acoustic Guitars" as well as a big list of electric and acoustic guitars. Each category page lists only its sub-categories, unless it is a "leaf" node, in which case it lists all the products, so e.g. category "Guitars" just has two links - to "Electric Guitars" and "Acoustic Guitars" - and no products. Option 2 means customers don't see products until they've decided which category they want, which doesn't seem ideal to me, but SEO-wise, which is best? Thanks! Alex

Slow page load times from asynchronous javascript
Our analytics are showing that our homepage takes, on average, ~14 seconds to load. All of the content on the page loads fairly quickly, while it takes a few seconds to load the social media stuff (which is mostly asynchronous javascript that is running in the background). The question is this: Does Her-Magesty-Google take into account the amount of time it takes to load everything, including the social media stuff from asynchronous javascript? Or does Google see that the content loads fairly quickly and doesn't ding me for the js that is running in the background?

Should I use my blog posts in a sub folder
Ok I did a search and didn't see an answer to this exact question. Most of them were about if a blog should be in a sub folder and not the blog posts themselves... so here it goes. I have a blog on my website the blog itself is in /blog/ but the blog posts themselves are situated in the root folder so it looks something like mydomain.com/cool-seo-blog-post/ Is there any reason I should change this and make it read mydomain.com/blog/cool-seo-blog-post/
