Why does someone's FB page rank so highly?
-
Hi Everyone,
i recently ran a non-personalized search and saw that this facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tampapersonalinjurylawyers ranked very highly for both "personal injury attorney" and "tampa personal injury attorney." The page has very few likes, and they don't even post that often. From my limited knowledge, that leaves me guessing it's because its a quasi-exact match facebook page, but that can't be right...can it?
(Ranking screenshot is attached)
Thanks,
Ruben

This, in my opinion, is the BIGGEST flaw with Google's algorithm right now. In order to beat back spam, Google gives heavy preference to high authority domains. That's why you see the SERPs dominated by brands right now. If you Google "brown boots", you'll notice each of the top results has little to NO links pointing to that page, but a HUGE overall domain authority.
SEOs are taking advantage of this loophole right now. Because properties like Facebook, Yelp, YouTube, SlideShare, etc have so much trust and equity built up with Google, you can spam the HELL out of them and not get penalized. And even if you do get penalized, it's really no skin off your back because it's just a social profile. No one was finding it through Google before so it doesn't matter if they can't find it in the future.
I rank a ton of YouTube videos and SlideShare documents with really crappy gigs on Fiverr. Low quality social bookmarks, cheap web 2.0s and old school spam link wheels work really well. All the garbage is essentially filtered out by the high authority of the domain.
P.S. You can't find the links with OSE because the link index is only updated once a month, and even at that, OSE's link indexer is pretty sub par.

Actually, I just ran it through the free version of seo majestic and found a bunch. So, I guess I should be using more than one backlink checker from now on!
Thanks guys,
Ruben

Hey Dennis,
What did you use to find those links? I ran it through OSE, and I got nothing.
Thanks,
Ruben

Hi Ruben
For one, he built a lot of links to it
http://www.reflectivepractice.ca/program.htm
http://www.mymakhzenandme.com/the-director.html
http://www.sourceabc.com/alpha/T/
http://theislandpartypei.ca/news.html
http://www.besthotpick.com/alpha/T/
all from sites he probably controls.
If you are going to ask why it's not penalised, that's another long story which is probably already answered here in the QA area somewhere.

I would a keyword difficulty analysis on that keyword and check the scores of the other pages ranking there. Remember that the root domain authority still holds a ton of value in rankings (facebook's being 100). And you're right, it's also grabbing some exact match text in the h2, url and body.

Google Plus page - keep or delete?
Do you guys think that if we are not going to be able to maintain a Google Plus page, from a SEO standpoint is it better to keep or delete the page? Also, do you guys think there's still SEO value to having a Google Plus page in general? Is it worth it? Thanks! MS

Short Facebook page name/vanity URL
Does anyone know how to go about getting a page name on Facebook of less than 5 characters? I saw Moz was able to claim facebook.com/moz (BTW, congrats on the redesign!), and many other brands also have claimed page names under 5 characters. Has anyone else had success claiming a short page name? Do you have to know the right person at Facebook, or are there other requirements? We have around 35K likes on our page, and our site gets a pretty good amount of traffic. My boss doesn't like any of my ideas that are 5+ characters... she really wants the short URL. If anyone has any insights on what I need to do (or who I need to talk to at Facebook), I'd really appreciate it!

MyBlogGuest releases 'Viral Content Buzz' website
Hi, Looks like Ann over at MyBlogGuest has released a very interesting side project called 'Viral Content Buzz' (www.viralcontentbuzz.com). I have had a quick look and it seems to be something that could be very useful regarding social sharing of content. Basically you can put your article into a category to gain exposure for it (this costs 'points'), once in the gallery others can tweet the link to the article to gain themselves points - and it goes round and round. It does look like a good way of building up followers and exposure but in order to pick up points you need to tweet and you can not tweet until you have a certain number of followers (just so you know I like this). The only thing I can think of negatively is how real are those lists? I guess the proof would be in the retweeting and visits to the article. Anyone else looked at this service?

Facebook Page likes vs Webpage facebook likes - Social Media Query
I have a website and a facebook page. I have the Facebook Social Plugin on my website which shows my facebook page likes - This is currently at approx 140 likes. Is there a difference between facebook page likes and webpage likes? For SEO purposes, should I be concentrating less on the Facebook page and more on building facebook likes for the website? Are there any guides on this? What gets people to like a website as opposed to a web-page?

FB og: tags - why?
Hi everyone, Can someone explain the benefits of adding OG tags to a site? As far as I can see/read doing this 'enables a site to become part of the FB social graph' (or similar..) ...and that's what exactly? (confused smiley) Cheers.

Whats the SEO value of getting Likes to your brand's Facebook Page (not your site's URLs being Liked)?
UPDATED: I meant to say SEO VALUE, not just business value Lets say I have a site - www.company.com, and I set up a Facebook Page - www.facebook.com/company. I understand the SEO value of having the domain www.company.com "Liked", using the FB Like button on my homepage lets say, or the same goes for individual pages - www.company.com/page. My question is rather about having my Facebook Page - Facebook.com/company "Liked". Are those likes counted by the engines as a strong signal that www.company.com should rank well? Or only that the Facebook Page - Facebook.com/company should rank well in searches for that company?

How does Google 'see' Facebook shares?
With Rand's new post about the correlation between FB Shares and rankings, I wanted to ask... How is Google able to see what links are being shared? Does the profile have to be public? Or do they get anonymous info direct from FB as part of some deal?
