Minimising the effects of duplicate content

Hello,
We realised that one of our clients, copied a large part of content from our website to his. The normal reaction would be to send a cease and desist letter. Nevertheless this would probably mean loosing a good client.
The client dumped the text of several articles (for example:
http://www.velascolawyers.com/en/property-law/136-the-ley-de-costas-coastal-law.html )Into the same page:
http://www.freundlinger-partners.com/en/home/faqs-property-law/I convinced the client to place our authorship tags on this page, but I am wondering if this is enough.
What do you think?

Yikes. I think that would be a good one to counsel them to re-write, otherwise I do not know of a way to divide up the canonicalization tag.

These are all valid points. Educating a client is always better than confrontation. Just a last question. The clients copied several articles coming from 25 different pages from my site into a single page. I suppose I have just to chose a single article (for example the article appearing first) and tell the client to place a canonical link pointing to it. I suppose there is no way to tell google that the content of the client's page is coming from several pages of my site.

The big point here to make as Hashtag mentioned (nice name BTW) is to explain to the client how it harms them. I have one site were we have literally thousands of local businesses that work with us and they will do things like this - mostly because they do not know any better. It is often due to a marketing assistant or outsourced firm that does not know what they are doing.
You actually have an opportunity here to show off your expertise and help your client and get this fixed (whether it is with a canonical or a rewrite). Staying focused on how this practice 1) hurts them and then 2) how you can help them fix it, makes you a winner and makes it an easier conversation than what you think it might be.
If you think about it, for this type of situation, this is the best possible scenario. It is a gift! You can most likely fix this as a you have a good relationship with the client, and even be able to improve your relationship with them (and make more money). If this were some random scraper, there would be nothing you could do besides filing a complaint.

Good morning! Well, there are a few things to keep in mind here. Matt Cutts has said a lot in regards to duplicate content, and people taking content. If someone posts an article & then it is copied and then posted somewhere else Google looks at a lot of factors to determine who will get credit for the article; who posted first, who has more authority and trustworthiness etc.
In this case, not only does your website appear to have more authority, but you also posted first, so on a surface look, it would appear like this is going to hurt them more than going to hurt you. Adding the rel-cannonical tag is basically telling search engines that you know this is the same content as somewhere else, and that you only want one version to be indexed. Search engines have also said that they pay attention to them, but are not obligated to follow it.

My advice, encourage them to rewrite your their content because it will help them bring business and rank better with Google! You kill 2 birds with one stone. You get your page back, and they get their own content!

Content relaunch without content duplication
We write great Content for blog and websites (or at least we try), especially blogs. Sometimes few of them may NOT get good responses/reach. It could be the content which is not interesting, or the title, or bad timing or even the language used. My question for the discussion is, what will you do if you find the content worth audience's attention missed it during its original launch. Is that fine to make the text and context better and relaunch it ? For example: 1. Rechristening the blog - Change Title to make it attractive

5. Change the timeline by adding more recent statistics, references to recent writeups (external and internal blogs for example), change anything that seems outdated Also, change title and set rel=cannoical / 301 permanent URLs. Will the above make the blog new? Any ideas and tips to do? Basically we like to refurbish (:-)) content that didn't succeed in the past and relaunch it to try again. GWT Duplicate Content and Canonical Tag - Annoying
Hello everyone! I run an e-commerce site and I had some problems with duplicate meta descriptions for product pages. I implemented the rel=canonical in order to address this problem, but after more than a week the number of errors showing in google webmaster tools hasn't changed and the site has been crawled already three times since I put the rel canonical. I didn't change any description as each error regards a set of pages that are identical, same products, same descriptions just different length/colour. I am pretty sure the rel=canonical has been implemented correctly so I can't understand why I still have these errors coming up. Any suggestions? Cheers

Duplicate Content on SEO Pages
I'm trying to create a bunch of content pages, and I want to know if the shortcut I took is going to penalize me for duplicate content. Some background: we are an airport ground transportation search engine(www.mozio.com), and we constructed several airport transportation pages with the providers in a particular area listed. However, the problem is, sometimes in a certain region multiple of the same providers serve the same places. For instance, NYAS serves both JFK and LGA, and obviously SuperShuttle serves ~200 airports. So this means for every airport's page, they have the super shuttle box. All the provider info is stored in a database with tags for the airports they serve, and then we dynamically create the page. A good example follows: http://www.mozio.com/lga_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/jfk_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/ewr_airport_transportation/ All 3 of those pages have a lot in common. Now, I'm not sure, but they started out working decently, but as I added more and more pages the efficacy of them went down on the whole. Is what I've done qualify as "duplicate content", and would I be better off getting rid of some of the pages or somehow consolidating the info into a master page? Thanks!

Duplicate Footer Content
A client I just took over is having some duplicate content issues. At the top of each page he has about 200 words of unique content. Below this is are three big tables of text that talks about his services, history, etc. This table is pulled into the middle of every page using php. So, he has the exact same three big table of text across every page. What should I do to eliminate the dup content. I thought about removing the script then just rewriting the table of text on every page... Is there a better solution? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Duplicate content with same URL?
SEOmoz is saying that I have duplicate content on: http://www.XXXX.com/content.asp?ID=ID http://www.XXXX.com/CONTENT.ASP?ID=ID The only difference I see in the URL is that the "content.asp" is capitalized in the second URL. Should I be worried about this or is this an issue with the SEOmoz crawl? Thanks for any help. Mike

Duplicate content
I am getting flagged for duplicate content, SEOmoz is flagging the following as duplicate: www.adgenerator.co.uk/ www.adgenerator.co.uk/index.asp These are obviously meant to be the same path so what measures do I take to let the SE's know that these are to be considered the same page. I have used the canonical meta tag on the Index.asp page.
