Changing URIs
-
About 2 months ago, my client changed its domain—using 301 redirect—and took the hit in search results. Here's my question: If I convince the client to revert to their old URI, will that help or hurt their SEO?
Follow-up, can it hurt to change interior URIs to something that better reflects the page content?
Thanks.

Thanks for your time, Ryan. I appreciate it.

Reverting will likely further extend whatever effects they're experiencing in the time delay that goes along with a domain name change... Take a look a this post from a couple of years ago regarding site migration: http://moz.com/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos. From that you can likely find some missing steps or URLs along the way that would benefit from being fixed. Again, reverting is no guarantee at all that rankings will return or that they would return quickly. Best to move forward with the new site and possible fixes that relate to keeping it on it's new domain as aggressively as possible. Good luck!

Domain Change -- Drop in Rank
So I had a client that recently decided to change their URL to make it more "searchable"/shorter. Since doing so, I have noticed a significant drop in rankings for a number of the keyword terms we were previously ranking for. Is there a way to push the links to the new URL or is the only solution to revert back to the old URL?

Should you change Temporary redirects 302's to a 301 even if page is not important/intended for ranking ?
Hi Whilst i appreciate its best practice to 301 redirect permanently moved pages, what if the page is say a login page or other page you not really interested in ranking or transferring juice to ? is it still important/best practice to do so simply because the page has permanently moved hence should still be a 301 even though you don't really want it to rank ? cheers dan

Changing the anchor text of a big amount of links at once is bad for SEO?
Hi there, Our service at fotograf.de is a shopsystem for professional photographers. The customers can build their own website with our tool including an onlineshop to sell their pictures. We have a lot of links from our customers linking to our homepage. The links come from subdomains of our domain and from external domains. We are now thinking about changing the anchor text of half of the links (round about 300.000 links). Do we have to fear a penalization of Google for changing so many anchor texts at once? Do we get better rankings if we choose a more optimized anchor text or does this have no effect because most of the links are from subdomains (each customer has its own subdomain) of our domain? Thanks for answering! Sebastian

Once we make changes to our site is there a way to force the engines to re-crawl it faster?
After we implement canonicals URLs, or make some other significant change to our site that is going to impact our SEO, is there a way to force Google or other search engines to re-index us faster? Would manually re-submitting a sitemap do this?

Frequent server changes
Hey guys. I have a server related question. One of our websites is hosted with a nasty slow company, and we want to make a change. The problem we have is that the site is 6 months old so it started on one server, the client then moved it to this slow host about 2 months ago, we now want to move it again. Will this negatively affect search engine rankings? As ever, thanks in advance 🙂

Site Change of Address - best method?
When changing domains, there's the obvious anxiety about sacrificing the value of your old domain. A client recently changed domains, immediately killed the old site (did everything properly with 301s, Webmaster Tools etc etc etc) and lost rankings completely for weeks. Turns out the site had been 'burnt' by the previous owner and it took a reconsideration request from Google before things recovered. Cost them rankings and cash with extra PPC spend. My question is: In order to avoid this potential hazard, what are your thoughts on submitting a change of address in Webmaster tools, but then leaving old site live for a few weeks to see how things pan out? I have never tried it and it seems to go against the grain, but interested to hear other people's experiences and how they have managed to change domain with minimal temporary damage. Thanks.
