What to do with localised landing pages on listings website - Canonical question
-
Hi
Run a pet listings website and we had tonnes of duplicate content that we have resolved. But not sure what to do with the localised landing pages.
We have everything pointing back back to the main listings URL http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale-stud-and-adoption/ but haven't pointed the URLs that show pets for specific towns and cities eg http://www.dogscatsandpets.co.uk/for-sale/dogs-and-puppies/in-city-of-london/ back to the main url. Obviously this is giving us duplicate content issues, but these pages do rank in local search and drive traffic into the site.
So my question is should we canonicalise the local pages back to the main url and if we do will this mean our local landing pages will no longer rank? Is there any alternatives?

I usually recommend noindexing search results pages, since Google has said they don't want "search results in their search results."
I was thinking about this this morning and I think one way to go would be to give advice on owning a dog in different areas of the city. For example you could say something like "In the City of London, the area is more urban and green spaces are fewer and far between. Dog owners in the City should expect to take their pups to a dog park for some regular exercise, and may want to consider smaller, lower-energy breeds who don't need as much time to run." Something like that. You could talk about nearby parks and dog-friendly attractions, endorse some local vets, list nearby pet hospitals, that sort of thing. It will take time to build out this content, but you can prioritize based on the existing organic traffic each page is getting, or start with your top converters and go from there.

Hi Ruth, exactly the answer I was looking for, thank you. Great article by the way, we had already implemented a lot of what you covered there.
I guess my only problem would be finding unique content for localised landing pages. Breed specific landing pages (eg 'cocker spaniels for sale') will be fine as I can feature breed descriptions on these and the latest listings. But a little more difficult for the page 'puppies for sale in London' for example. Maybe I could feature some breeder profiles for that area.
Would you also recommend putting a no follow on the search results if we put these landing pages in?

Canonicalizing all these URLs back to your main page will drastically reduce the total number of pages that will drive any kind of traffic. At the very least, I would look at which type of URL is attracting the most organic traffic (location, listing type, breed, etc) and work to make these pages real landing pages for these search terms - other than the listings, what other information could you provide on these pages that would make them more unique? Striving to make the pages more unique from each other will give you more long-tail opportunity than canonizing everything back to the main page.
Ultimately, I recommend you rework your navigation using a combination of facets and filters, in order to reduce duplicate content while still having mid-tail level landing pages. Hannah Smith wrote a great piece for Moz on this a couple of years ago that's still useful today: http://moz.com/blog/information-architecture-faceted-navigation-duplicate-content-oh-my

Hi
Thanks for the quick reply. We used canonicals as a long term fix. We had duplicate content all over. You've get the url that displays every listing on the site that I posted above. Then unique URLs for different types of breed, URLs for listing type (for sale, stud, adoption) and location Etc. Obviously all these different URLs just created loads of duplicate content as one listing could appear in quite a few urls.
So we used canonical on everything to the url that displays all listings. Except for the localised URLs that we left as is. But moz sees these pages as duplicate content, as some listings appear in URLs for two locations depending on the postcode radius and all appear on the URL that displays every listing on the site.
Does tes that make things clearer at all?

Hi Calum,
Going the canonical route is typically meant as a short-term solution when a site is under maintenance - it normally isn't meant to be a long-term fix.
From what I understand, you have a number of localized landing pages for your services set up and they are bringing in traffic to your main page.
You don't want to redirect or create tags back to your home page from all of your local pages as this will create penalties with Google. Your best bet might be to incorporate your local pages into your site structure in a way that would permit them to be easily crawled (and therefore easy to access) rather than redirecting all traffic to your home page.
This is what I think you might be doing when you say "we have everything pointing back to our main URL" - it would be best to create new pages for redirects if this is indeed what you are doing.
Maybe give me some more information on the previous duplicate content, where you started and where you are now and I can create a more specific answer for you.

Proper SEO structure for Franchise/ Franchisee websites
Hi Neighbors, Franchise website design and development can be difficult, there’s no doubt about it. I had to find the right balance between a unique and unified brand identity, and a localized experience that accurately reflects the individual franchisees and their efforts. Due to the many benefits, I have structured the to read _domain.com/location _ domain.com = TLD /location = subfolder (location page) I have also built a customized CMS (e.g. Drupal) and have given each location access to manage their location page (subfolder). To accommodate local SEO optimization, franchisees have complete control in terms of optimizing their location page (subfolder). Title tags, meta description, Alt tags, etc... Will any local optimization performed in the subfolder (location page) be stiffened because it was not done in the TLD but in the subfolder ?

City Pages for Local SEO
Hey Mozzers, I have a local SEO question for you. I am working with a medical professional to SEO their site. I know that when creating city pages, you want to try and make each page as strong as you can, showcasing testimonials from people who live in those towns, for instance. Since my client is in the medical profession, i was going to include a list of parks from that town and say something about how, "we want to encourage good health, etc." However, i began to wonder whether i should just create one, large resource for the surrounding towns having to do with parks, dog parks, and athletic activities and link to it in the top nav. thoughts? Is it ok to redirect users to a market-specific home page based on their previous selection?
I'm working with a real estate client currently that asks users to identify the market they are in prior to showing them properties. The markets are far enough apart that no user would conceivably be browsing within two separate markets. When the user selects their market choice, they are redirected to a market-specific home page whenever they login after the original home page loads. These market-specific pages are ranking currently (page 2-4) for market-related phrases, but before embarking on further optimization I wanted to get a second opinion on whether or not keeping this redirect process is even a good idea or not. Thoughts?

Improve my on-page SEO
Hello, I am a photographer based in the UK, I have recently increased my prices, so SEO has become more important then ever as I need to target additional cities and wedding venues. I am looking for suggestions on ways I can ethically improve my websites on-page SEO and regional landing pages. I am running out of ideas, so any suggestions would be welcome. Do you think search engines will see these regional pages as low quality spammy pages are they not advised! If so how can I target other cities with out paying for PPC. Home page Additional Issues Is the 404 server script any good? I also have an issue, with old deleted wordpress pages, redirecting them even though there are no redirects set up in SEO yoast. I am not sure the server script on the shared hosting for 404 errors is any good, does anyone have any experience with this. For example this page returns the 404 page, however the header status is 200. http://www.robertsail.co.uk/derby-wedding-photographers-2/ If I moved to a dedicated server would this help me out.

Multi-Country Multi-Language content website
Hi Community! I'm starting a website that is going to have content from various countries and in several languages. What is the best URL structure in this case? I was thinking of doing something like: english name of the plant, content in english, content for USA:
Local Website Optimization | | phiber
www.flowerpedia.com/flowers/red-roses spanish name of the plant, content in spanish, content for MX:
mx.flowerpedia.com/es/rosas/rosas-rojas english name of the plant, content in english, content for MX:
mx.flowerpedia.com/roses/red-roses
this content is not the same as flowerpedia/flowers/red-roses Content for Mexico would not exist in languages other than english and spanish. So for example:
mx.flowerpedia.com/jp/flowers/red-roses would not exist and it would redirect
to the english version:
mx.flowerpedia.com/flowers/red-roses What would be the best URL structure in this case?0 -
Search Result Brings Up Home Page
Hi all, I've been looking at some SEO work on our new CMS site that's been up for a few months now and when doing a search for a particular page which I know has good SEO and received a 'B' rating on the MOZ on page grader, our home page shows up and not our relevant page. I don't exactly want to worsen the SEO on our home page so that it doesn't show up, but why would my home page which is fairly generic and covers a large area of the business show up rather than the specific page which I am searching with exact keywords for? For example: If I was searching for 'bananas' my home page for fruits would show up rather than my bananas page which has been tailored around those keywords. Thanks

Hi All, I'm looking to rebrand my current website to a new domain name.
Local Website Optimization | | Mark_Ch
In short the current website has out grown it's potential. The domain name is not memorable nor is it attracting a wider audience.
I will create my new website and 301 redirect the old website to the new, hence pass SEO value. Google Places
Having spoken to Google they tell me that I can simply change the URL in Google Places to the new URL. Articles on my current website
I have a number of rich content articles on my current website, can I simply create my new website and copy & paste these previously written articles? Google+, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
What should I do for accounts associated with the current website? Any other useful information would be much appreciated. Regards Mark0 -
