HELP! How do I get Google to value one page over another (older) page that is ranking?
-
So I have a tactical question and I need mozzers.
I'll use widgets as an example:
1- My company used to sell widgets exclusively and we built thousands of useful, branded unique pages that sell widgets. We have thousands of pages that are ranking for widgets.com/brand-widgets-for-sale. (These pages have been live for almost 2 years)
2- We've shifted our focus to now renting widgets. We have about 100 pages focused on renting the same branded widgets. These pages have unique content and photos and can be found at widgets.com/brand-widgets-for-rent. (These pages have been live for about 2-3 months)
The problem is that when someone searches just for the brand name, the "for sale" pages dramatically outrank the "for rent" pages. Instead, I want them to find the "for rent" page. I don't want to redirect traffic from the "for sale" pages because someone might still be interested in buying (although as a company, we are super focused on renting).
Solutions?
- "nofollow" the "for sale" pages with the idea that Google will stop indexing "for sale" and start valuing "for rent" over it?
- Remove "for sale" from sitemap.
Help!!

Eric
I think there may be three main factors getting "for rent" to rank just brand searches (without "rent" or "buy")
-
Internal architecture - if you link to 'for rent' more often and closer to the homepage more often, compared to 'buy' - you should send more authority to 'for rent' and maybe they will rank better. You can use a tool like Screaming Frog SEO spider to see how your internal linking is. Think if it like trying to optimize for users to internally click through to "for rent" more, and you'll sort of optimize architecture at the same time.
-
External authority to those pages specifically - external links directly to those pages and people searching and clicking on those pages. In other words, link building and external traffic to those pages should help them grow in authority. Not sure if they are the type of page you can build links to directly, but you should be able to build links to pages that link to them - like External site-->article on your blog-->brand "for rent" page.
-
Time - I think to some extent it will take time. Google needs to gain trust in these pages, crawl them multiple times, see users interacting with them etc etc. Set it up for success with the suggestions above, and then give it time!

Thanks Dan for the insight.
Yes, we'd like to capture both "for sale" and "for rent" keywords associated with the brand but the bigger word we want to capture is the brand name alone or the "for rent"=brand. The lowest priority is the "for sale" keywords. Obviously the brand will probably be no. 1 every time, but there's no reason we can't secure a first page spot for just the brand name and have the "for rent" brand page be the one that shows up.
how big is the market:
for some brand names, pretty big, others, not so much, it fluctuateshow competitive:
lots of other companies are vying for the brand name, but there is at least one or two results on the first page that don't belong.search volume:
not enormous but definitely the people we want to come to our site. but again, depending on the brand, the volume could be largetypical user:
probably looking to rent instead of buy -
I think it's important to understand the options and the results they will cause:
- You could "noindex" the for sale page - it will still live on your site, it's just that no one will find it in Google.
- You can rel = canonical "for sale" -> "for rent" but technically you're not supposed to because the content is different. If it worked, it would basically achieve the same thing as the noindex anyway. It's supposed to pass value like a redirect, but I doubt it would since the content is different.
I think the hidden dilemma is in the fact you're trying to capture both "for sale" and "for rent" traffic - what are the keywords driving traffic to the far sale or for rent page? Maybe it's really a matter of getting both pages to rank for their respective keywords/intents and making it cleat to the user front and center on each page they can in fact both buy or rent. So the "for rent" page would clearly state "hey, did you know you can buy this too?"
I don't know how popular the keywords are too - this would help determine the overall strategy - knowing how big the market is, how competitive, the search volume - and what a typical user expects in the industry.
-
May I also add that the old "for sale" pages have an incredible high bounce rate when it's the first page people see.
And as I search further, I wonder if rel=canonical is the way to go. The pages are very similar but have a very different focus. Regardless, I want Google to show the "for rent" page without completely turning off the functionality of the "for sale" page.
Thanks for serving as my sounding board moz. i may just answer this question myself

What should I do if same content ranked twice or more on Google?
I have a Bangla SEO related blog where I have written article like "Domain Selection" "SEO Tools" "MOZ" etc. All the article has been written in Bengali language. I have used wp tag for every post. I have submit xml site map generated by Yoast SEO. However I kept "no index" for category. I know well duplicate content is a major problem for SEO. After publishing my content Google ranked them on 1st page. But my fear is that most of the content twice or more. The keywords are ranked by post, wp post tag and Archive. Now I have a fear of penalty. Please check the screenshot and please suggest me what to do. uRCHf yq7m2 rSLKFLG

Newly designed page ranks in Google but then disappears - at a loss as to why.
Hi all, I wondered if you could help me at all please? We run a site called getinspired365.com (which is not optimised) and in the last 2 weeks have tried to optimise some new pages that we have added. For example, we have optimised this page - http://getinspired365.com/lifes-a-bit-like-mountaineering-never-look-down This page was added to Google's index via webmaster tools. When I then did a search for the full quote it came back 2nd in Google's search. If I did a search for half the quote (Life is a bit like mountaineering) it also ranked 2nd. We had another quote page that we'd optimised that displayed similar behaviour (it ranked 4th). But then for some reason when I now do the search it doesn't rank in the top 100 results. This, despite, an unoptimised "normal" page ranking 4th for a search such as: Thousands of geniuses live and die undiscovered. So our domain doesn't seem to be penalised as our "normal" pages are ranking. These pages aren't particularly well designed from an SEO standpoint. But our new pages - which are optimised - keep disappearing from Google, despite the fact they still show as indexed. I've rendered the pages and everything appears fine within Google Webmaster Tools. At a bit of a loss as to why they'd drop so significantly? A few pages I could understand but they've all but been removed. Any one seen this before, and any ideas what could be causing the issue? We have a different URL structure for our new pages in that we have the quote appear in the URL. All the content (bar the quote) that you see in the new pages are unique content that we've written ourselves. Could it be that we've over optimised and Google view these pages as spam? Many thanks in advance for all your help.

Will Using Attributes For Landing Pages In Magento Dilute Page Rank?
Hello Mozzers! We have an ecommerce site built on Magento. We would like to use attribute filters in our layered navigation for landing page purposes. Each page will have a unique URL, Meta Title and Meta Description. For example: URL: domain.com/art/abstract (category is Art, attribute is Abstract) Title: Abstract Art For Sale Meta: Blah Blah Blah Currently these attribute pages are not being indexed by google as they are set in google parameters. We would like to edit google parameters to start indexing some of the attribute filters that users search for, so they can be used as landing pages. Does anyone have experience with this? Is this a good idea? What are the consequences? Will this dilute Page Rank? Could this destroy the world? Cheers! MozAddict

Any ideas for easy code to get rankings live?
I'm interested in gathering some further data for my site. What I would like to do is as well as collecting the search Keyword for users coming to my site, I would also like to gather the search engine position for that keyword LIVE - IE what is the current position of that keyword in the SE at the time the user put in their search. This data will be really useful when digging down on my analysis. Does anyone have any simple ideas of how you would go about implimenting this? Many thanks

Need help/insights. Site SEO = OK, Authority BLs = OK, Rank page #1\. How to reach pos #1?
Hi there! Some doubts are confusing my head and need some assistence from you to get on the right track. I'll explain my situation and want to hear from you what do you really recommend for med/long term permanent results. 1 - I have a PR2 (.com.br) domain; 2 - I'm talking about little/med competition micro-niche keywords; 3 - I got all pages I want to, indexed (I have a well SEO constructed website with internal link building); 4 - If a keyword has average competition, I'll already start ranking in page #3 on the SERP's; For a few low competition keywords I start on page #1; 5 - I do a little whitehat link building, 1 or 2 backlinks on authority sites and then like 15 days later I came to page #1, generally on position 9/10; And then I got stucked 🙂 No more authority sites where I can get backlinks... I do some posts on the company twitter/facebook page's, but they are no follow, so I don't really now if this can help. (never see a SERP result). I did some "blackhat" stuff to see if it really work: I can say for sure the "profile backlinks" that we can buy from some sites doesn't work (maybe it's just for me). I can't see it on webmaster tool and neither my ranks changed since I bought a pack of 100 links (the links are working, I see it one by one) to test. Maybe the problem is about the domains, cause my site is .com.br and I'm buying .com profile links. I guess google understand backlinks from .com.br more valuable for my sites. Back to whitehat: I wrote some articles and posted it the right way, of course on .com.br articles sites, got it indexed and can see the backlink on webmaster tool, but no change on SERP's. (maybe this can be a long term result and I'm not seeing it yet). I'm really "scratching my hand" to do some blackhat stuff, but I don't want to lose what I already have done... I heard a lot about scrapebox but doesn't fell confortable to spam as hell a lot of blogs. I really want long term permanent results (my sites are totally whitehat/corporate sites). Can you expert guys give me some point to where I need to "walk" now to improve the SERP's? I never reached top #1 and want to try to rank at least one time to understand how this can be made... I'm thinking now to pay someone to rewrite 20 copies of an article and up it on some sites, to see if 20 can improve something. But still no confident, because it will cost like $100 for a good writer do it for me on my language. Maybe I can do better things with 100 bucks. I guess I did the path right: Internal SEO -> got indexed -> backlinking from authorities -> new articles backlinks to me (is it ok at this position or no?) -> (what next ?) I know SEO is a hard/never ending work, but what I'm trying to get cleaned on my head is the path of the work (if a right path really exists). Every word will be apreciated. What do you can suggest to me to try now? (please give me a hint to see SERP's results 🙂 if I feel that something worked, no matter how it can cost to me, but I'll pay for the work happily) Sorry if I'm a little confusing, english isnt' my first language. Thanks.
