Http urls on a new https website
-
Hi,
If a site is quite new and setup as https from the beginning why would http variations exist?
There are 301 redirects in place from the http to the https variation and also canonical tags pointing back to the http variation? This seems contradictory to me.
I'm not sure why the http variations exist at all but they have gone to the trouble of redirecting these to the https variation indicating that it is the variation of choice but at the same time using a canonical tag that indicates the http variation is the original/main url?
Thanks

As Logan pointed out, the most likely cause of this is because of the canonical tags pointing to the HTTP variation. I'd probably suggest carrying out the following:
Download a tool like Screaming Frog SEO Spider and crawl your full website - https://www.screamingfrog.co.uk/seo-spider - Once the crawl has run, export the data and check both the URLs and the Canonicals across all pages to ensure only HTTPS variants appear.
If you find http variants, then it's likely that the redirect rules you have in place aren't working. This is a global rewrite rule that can be applied to force the https:// version to show at all times, so you shouldn't need to make the changes once by one. I'd also make sure that if you're linking to any pages internally, that you're linking to them using a relative path, or straight to the https:// version. If your canonicals are causing issues, just ensure they're always choosing the HTTPS version and you shouldn't have any issues!
Finally, in GSC, just make sure you've got the HTTPS version of the site setup and that your sitemap includes only HTTPS URLs.
Hope this helps!

Hi M V,
Any updates on this, or are you able to share the site? How's it going?

Hi,
It's difficult to tell without seeing the site, but the likely problem is related to those canonical tags. A canonical tag that doesn't point to the preferred version of a URL can cause indexation problems, but not resolving URL issues.
There could also be some pages that don't have that 301 redirect applied, therefore leaving some pages to resolve at HTTP.

I want to shift my website to a new domain name, with my brand name. Would Lose rankings
hi, Currently i have a 18 year old domain name "www.jaipurdentists.com". I wish to shift to a new domain name "www.thaperdental.com". primarily because of two reasons: 1. I have a same name competitor with domain "www.thaperdentalclinic.com", the site gets benefited because of the brand name domain. 2. The new domain name "www.thaperdental.com" is better to remember and pronounce. Even if I redirect all web-pages, properly to the corresponding web-pages on new site. Should I go ahead with this? will it result in drop in rankings!

Can you keep you old HTTP xml sitemape when moving to HTTPS site wide?
Hi Mozers, I want to keep the HTTP xml sitemape live on my http site to keep track of indexation during the HTTPS migration. I'm not sure if this is doable since once our tech. team forces the redirects every http page will become https. Any ideas? Thanks

Migrating Http Site to Https Version
Hello, This coming weekend we will be changing our http sites to https versions. I have a very quick question regarding Google Search Console. Because the migration is happening over a weekend, we want to get as much as possible setup beforehand. Is there any risk to adding the new properties to the search console without the sites being live yet? I want to deliver the Search Console verify files to our IT team in advance for them to add to the site, and then once I get the okay that the migration went successfully, I would go into the Search Console and click on the Verify button to get the sites verified and of course, then fetch as Google to help speed up indexing a bit and ensure there are no errors. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated! Amiee

Changing URLs for SEO
Hi, Currently we have a page, /business, but we have shifted our strategy to optimize for this page for the keyword "enterprise" instead of "business". The page authority of this page is 18 and our domain authority is 35. I've already updated content and title tags to more of an enterprise focus. Would it be wise to move the page to /enterprise and create a 301 redirect from /business to /enterprise? Or is this too risky from an SEO standpoint? Thanks!

Backslash in URL
my main URL is www.americanmusical.com, SEOMOZ shows I have a duplicate page title on www.americanmusical.com/. I have the think the backslash is causing other issues. I noticed when I first go to my site it is without the /, but if I navigate to the home page, the URL has the / in it. Any ideas on if this is a problem or how to handle it?

Blank Canonical URL
So my devs have the canonical URL loaded up on pages automatically, and in most cases this gets done correctly. However we ran across a bug that left some of these blank like so: Does anyone know what effect that would have? I am trying to provide a priority for this so I can say "FIX IT NOW" or "Fix it after the other 'FIX IT NOW' type of items". Let me know if you have any ideas. I just want to be sure I am not telling google that all of these pages are like the home page. Thanks!

New URL structure caused a HUGE drop?
I have started working with a client who did an upgrade on their e-commerce sive in May of last year. It totally changed the URL structure and they didn't redirect old URLs or do any of the things they should have. Not unexpectedly they they went from about 300 visitors a day to 0 for then rose up to maybe 50 and have remained there ever since. There were some major onsite issues including about 15000 internal links that 302 back to the site. In any case I have fixed most of the onsite problems and worked on a little better categorization + content optimization, etc. We have only been working on this for about 30 days and organic traffic is up and they are ranking for much better keywords, but I expected a little quicker rise. Here is a screenshot out of GA of their descent. Its pretty rapid. I dont think it makes sense to redirect their old URLs at this point since most of them have been deindexed for 10+ months. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get back to their previous level. The domain actually has decent authority and link profile, etc. Is this just going to be a slow climb back? Any thoughts? Starting a new product, should we use new domain or subdomain
I'm working with a company that has a high page rank on it's main domain and is looking to launch a new business / product offering. They are evaluating either creating a subdomain or launching a brand new domain. In either case, their current site will link contextually to the new site. Is there one method that would be better for SEO than the other? The new business / product is related to the main offering, but may appeal to different / new customers. The new business / product does need it's own homepage and will have a different conversion funnel than the existing business.
