Wordpress Tags and Catagories
-
I am looking for data in regards to Wordpress and blog tags and categories. Wordpress has these identifies in there tool, but I see them being used less and less. Wordpress also creates annoying pages and duplicate content errors when using tags. Should I remove these tags and categories to improve SEO?
I am also wondering if anyone has noticed a difference in user experience and traffic when changing these.

Hi Eric,
Without having too much info to work from, it does sound like you're on the right track here. If the tags aren't really serving a purpose there's no reason to have them junking up your site with duplicates.
If those tags are removed correctly they won't generate 404s because nothing should be linking to them. The only way you might end up with an internal 404 through removing them is if you've linked directly to them in your content.
It's always a good idea to crawl your site with something like Screaming Frog's SEO Spider after the removal to make sure.
The other thing to double-check is your referral traffic in Google Analytics and your backlink profile. Between these two you can confirm that you don't have any links pointing to a tag page that's actually sending real traffic. It's unlikely but still worth checking!

Hi Chris,
To follow-up on an old post of yours, I'm faced with hundreds of random WordPress tags that our social media person created during the past couple of years. Most of these serve no purpose and do not support a consistent site-wide theme. In my opinion, these just seem to dilute keyword emphasis and make it difficult for Google to know what our site is actually about.
I am seeing dozens of our /tag/ pages in the search results so I know they've been indexed. Last week I blocked the tags from Google using the no index feature within the Yoast plugin for WordPress, however, I'm reluctant to go in and just delete a bunch of tags for fear of generating hundreds of 404 error pages.
Any words of wisdom are appreciated.
Thanks.
Eric

There is very little traffic to those category pages and I think deleting them would be best. Thank you for helping out.

Not specifically, no; I think the benefit in this case is simply reducing the number of pages that may have duplicate content. Do you have a means of checking what traffic to those category pages looks like? GA, perhaps?

I think he answered it really well. Did you know of any data or examples that support deleting tags and its effect on SEO?
Thank you,
Joey

Hi Joey! Did Chris answer your question?

Hi Joey,
There are 2 ways you can go about this and it really just depends on the context of your site - ultimately the decision comes down to user experience.
Option A - Remove the tags As you said, you can simply remove the tags and be done with it all. It's a clean and simple solution that removes that duplication quickly.
If those tags don't really serve any purpose, this is going to be the best route. If you've only got a small number of blog and/or they're all around the same basic topic, there's no need to be dealing with those tag pages and chewing up precious crawl budget. Analytics is your friend on this one - are people actually visiting those tag pages?
Option B - Tidy up and have faith in the search engines This option is far more time-intensive but necessary if those tags are actually serving a purpose. In this instance, do the usual tidying up like making sure you're only displaying snippets of each post, you don't have redundant tag pages (e.g. tags for Onsite SEO, SEO Onsite Elements and Onsite) etc and I generally suggest avoiding or at least cutting down on pagination where you can as well. There's no need to have only 10 snippets per tag page if you're got ~100 posts in each - all this does is frustrate mobile users and give you 10 pages for that tag while taking up that crawl budget as well.
Search engines do a pretty good job these days of understanding how these pages come about and what purpose they serve so as long as they're not blatantly spammy and are tidy enough, you're generally going to be safe. You could block them via robots.txt if you're really worried about it though I personally don't bother.

Duplicate Title Tags/Meta Tags for Website with Multiple Locations
I currently have an insurance website that has over 40 offices in Ontario. The site also provides online quoting.
On-Page Optimization | | MainstreamMktg
In some of our programming, we have implemented variables in the URLS that will allow the quotes to go to the specific city offices - the issue I am having is that the quote in itself is the same quote form (same title, same meta) because it's technically one page on the website. We did it this way to avoid having to update 40 forms if a field on the form were to change. Is there any way I can relieve my site of this duplicate title tag/meta tag issue? Any insight would be really appreciated - thanks so much!0 -
Keywords on Title Tag and Meta Description?
I have question regarding the use of keywords on title tag and meta description. I will take my website as example... Title Tag: Web Design Company & Digital Marketing Agency in Jakarta Meta Description: Coriate is a full-service website design & Internet marketing firm in Indonesia. We offer the best web solutions and SEO service in the industry. My questions: Is it good? Because I followed Blue Fountain Media. They don't use same keyword on title tag and meta description. You can see on title tag I use "web design" while on meta description I use "website design". Or should I use "web design" on meta description too? Blue Fountain Media doesn't use their company name on title tag. But when I search "Blue Fountain Media" on Google, it only showed their company name. How? Their title tag was "Website Design Company & Digital Marketing Agency in NYC | BFM". Is it necessary to use H1? Because as you can see on my company website Coriate there's no H1.

Title Tag duplication.
Hi Guys/Gals, We do a lot of work in a very competitive space (personal injury) and are having an internal debate on the best way to implement title tags for new sites. We understand that keywords, title tags, etc., don't possess the power they once did, but we have yet to see conclusive proof of this in our space. The vast majority of competitors still rank very well for keyword focused content, title tags, etc., while having average link profiles and little content. We write a lot of content for our clients and want to know if someone can offer their opinion on the question that follows this example: "Top 5 Injuries Caused by T-Bone Collisions | Indiana Accident Lawyer" Would it seem repetitive or manipulative to construct title tags as shown, always placing "Indiana Accident Attorney" or "Indianapolis Accident Lawyer," or similar of at the end of each title tag? Thanks, gang!

Canonical tags
In previous we had issues with capital letters in page urls. So we made a 301 redirection to lower case page url. But I read there that it's not good idea to use 301 redirection, better solution for that canonical tag. So we placed canonical url tak to lower case page url... So after week, in google webmaster tools I see around 60k os dublicate pages. Why google don't see canonical tag? Thank you

Rel canonical tag question
Im trying to to fix my duplicate content problem with my catagory pages in my shopping cart. I have read about adding a rel canonical tag to the page so it links back to the main catagory page. So if I add a rel canonical tag to the main catagory page it will show up on every other page for that catagory like page 1 page 2 and so on and it will have the tag linking back to the main cat. That should fix it it right? Now that being said I cant seem to add the tag invetween the head tags. I can add it to the body where I can add content. Will the rel canonical tag work outside the head tags? Any other ideas on this fix? I contacted my people that host the cart to see if they have any features to help this will see what they say.

Tag clouds: good for internal linking and increase of keyword relevant pages?
As Matt Cutts explained, tag clouds are OK if you're not engaged in keyword stuffing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYPX_ZmhLqg) - i.e. if you're not putting in 500 tags. I'm currently creating tags for an online-bookseller; just like Amazon this e-commerce-site has potentially a couple of million books. Tag clouds will be added to each book detail page in order to enrich each of these pages with relevant keywords both for search engines and users (get a quick overview over the main topics of the book; navigate the site and find other books associated with each tag). Each of these book-specific tag clouds will hold up to 50 tags max, typically rather in the range of up to 10-20. From an SEO perspective, my question is twofold: 1. Does the site benefit from these tag clouds by improving the internal linking structure? 2. Does the site benefit from creating lots of additional tag-specific-pages (up to 200k different tags) or can these pages become a problem, as they don't contain a lot of rich content as such but rather lists of books associated with each tag? Thanks in advance!
