How much of an issue is JS?
-
Hey folks,
So, I got two pages. Page A has a lot more content but in a tabular format which uses javascript and a Title Tag which is a synonym for our keyword, but not the actual keyword. Page B has less content, and the title tag is the exact keyword phrase we want to rank for. Page A has a bigger backlink profile (though not enormous by any extent).
Page A ranks in 30th. Page B ranks in 7th.
Importance of Title tag? Importance of JS? Both?
Discuss!
Cheers,
Rhys

Hi SwanseaMedicine,
Have a read of this hidden content experiment by Reboot Online: https://www.rebootonline.com/blog/hidden-text-experiment/
It was a very well-run experiment and, in summary, they found that visible content outperformed hidden content.
However, this will change once Google's mobile-first index rolls out (sometime in 2018?) where hidden content will be given full weight (source).
Cheers,
David

Google is all about serving the best experience with the best content. When you put tabbed content on a website, especially if the tabs serve multiple topics, you are watering down that page. Also because a portion of the content starts at hidden, it makes a worse UX experience for a user to directly get to your content (because they have to click).

Hey Michael,
Thanks for your response. The question is, I suppose, why does it not rank as well? Does Google not value it as highly? Or does it struggle to fetch and render it because it's tabbed? It does seem to be the biggest factor, in my opinion, in the difference between the two pages.
Cheers,
Rhys

Without knowing more I would guess the issue is tabbed content does not perform as well as content that is always displayed on a page. Always look to your content first, then worry about things like title tags.

Internal link is creating duplicate content issues and generating 404s from website crawl.
Not sure what the best way to describe it but the site is built with Elementor page builder. We are finding out that a feature that is included with a pop modal window renders an HTML code as so: Click So when crawled I think the crawling is linking itself for some reason so the crawl returns something like this: xyz.com/builder/listing/ - what we want what we don't want xyz.com/builder/listing/ xyz.com/builder/listing/%23elementor-action%3Aaction%3Dpopup%3Aopen%26settings%3DeyJpZCI6Ijc2MCIsInRvZ2dsZSI6ZmFsc2V9/ xyz.com/builder/listing/%23elementor-action%3Aaction%3Dpopup%3Aopen%26settings%3DeyJpZCI6Ijc2MCIsInRvZ2dsZSI6ZmFsc2V9//%23elementor-action%3Aaction%3Dpopup%3Aopen%26settings%3DeyJpZCI6Ijc2MCIsInRvZ2dsZSI6ZmFsc2V9/ so you'll notice how that string in the HREF is appended each time and it loops a couple times. Could I 301 this issue, what's the best way to go about handling something like this? It's causing duplicate meta descriptions/content errors for some listing pages we have. I did add a rel='nofollow' to the anchor tag with JavaScript but not sure if that'll help.

Issues with Google Search Console and rekeyed SSL certificate
Hi, Another newbie question please. I've recently changed the name of my business so bought a new domain and rekeyed the SSL certificate to the new domain. Let's say the old domain was called https://123.com and the new one is https://abc.com. I've set up a 301 redirect on 123.com to forward to abc.com and I've added the new domain to Google Search Console and verified it, however can't seem to use the Change of Address tool to move from the old domain to the new domain. I think its because my preferred property (https://123.com) technically no longer exists since I rekeyed the SSL certificate from the old site to the new one so the old site no longer has an SSL certificate. When I go to the old https domain it doesn't load, nor does it seem to forward to the new site. It just times out. Am I correct in assuming that since I rekeyed the SSL certificate, that my original preferred property on Google (https://123.com) no longer exists? And if so, is there a way to use the Change of Address tool or do I simply need to remove the old site from Google and go through a period where my (new) site builds it's ranking from scratch? Thanks in advance folks!

Magento Rewrite Issue
Moz's Crawler has thrown up a bunch of crawl issue for my site. The site is a magento based site and I recently updated the themes so some routes may have have become redundant. Moz has identified 289 pages with Temporary Redirect. I thought magento managed the redirects if I set the "Auto-redirect to Base URL" to Yes(301 Moved permanently). But this is enabled on my store and I still get the errors. The only thing I could think of was to add a Robots.txt and handle the redirection of these links from here. But handling redirection for 289 links is no mean task. I was looking for any ideas that could fix this without me manually doing this .

Content: How Much and What Kind for top Keyword Rankings?
Aside from well optimized meta tags, alt tags, captions I could use some help figuring out: What's the recommended number of words (original of course) on page? What should be the keyword % ? We've recently engaged an SEO company to provide an audit, and hired another for comparison and guess what ... 2 different viewpoints. I consider this to be the worst $3 grand we've ever spent! I look forward to your opinions

Impact issues when switching from .com to uk
Buon Giorno from wetherby UK 5 degrees C and rivers bursting their banks everywhere 😞 This site http://www.sandtoft.com/ has requested a switch in url forwardfing in that they want the following to happen: When u enter the .com url it forwards to the .co.uk domain (the opposite from what it is today ie when you eneter .co.uk it switches to the .com url) So my question is please... "Will changing the .com url to .co.uk via forwarding affect SERPS in any significant manner" My view is the impact will be a minor dip in the serps followed by a recovery. Any insights welcome 🙂

Looking to hire someone to help on my website. On page issues with subpages outranking homepage
Hello, I have a site that has been doing good for quite a while now. But lately I'm running into issues with on page seo. I have ranked well for long periods of time, but changes like adding content or moving stuff around has bumped me out of the rankings. I would prefer not to publicly disclose the site. My main keyword I rank for is "word1 word2". I notice if I do a site: search for "word1 word2" homepage is #1, site search for just word1 it's #1 as well, but the word2 returns a category listing above the homepage. I noticed this happen right as I fell back from the rankings. I am looking to hire an SEO profession to help me out with on page issues. I've come to admit that I just don't understand something about this and I need help from someone who has a lot of experience with this. I was hoping to find recommendations by people here for a company I could hire for this. I would want to pay no more than $1,000. I hope that budget is high enough to get a skilled individual/company working with me. I'm not sure where to search for online to get a skilled on page seo professional, so I thought a personal recommendation from someone here would possibly be able to help. Thanks
