URL structure for new product launch
-
Hello,
I work for a company (let's call it companyX) that is about to launch a new product, lets call it ProductY. www.CompanyX.com is an old domain with a good domain authority. The market in which ProductY is being launched is extremely competitive.
The marketing department want's to launch ProductY on a new website at www.ProductY.com.
My opinion is that we should instead create a subfolder with product information at www.CompanyX.com/ProductY. By doing this we could leverage on the existing domain authority of CompanyX.comAdditionally for campaigns, and in order to have a more memorable URL we could use ProductY.com with a 301 redirect to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY
What do you think is the best strategy from an SEO point of view?
Cheers

Hi Luca,
there should be no reason to link to ProductY.com if it's an empty web that you redirect to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY, unless you create those backlinks, and if you create them, better to point them directly to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY
If there is some reason why someone naturally could create backlinks to that domain that I'm missing, in that case it could help, and it would transfer link juice to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY
If your company wants to do this for marketing purposes, go ahead, it won't benefit your SEO but it won't either harm it.
Greetings!

Hi Pau,
Thanks for your answer. I will push for going with www.CompanyX.com/ProductY
The second part of my question is related to the fact that Marketing wants an product URL easy to remember, to have in campaigns and marketing material. Therefore my idea was to use an additional domain (let's say productY.com).
ProductY.com would be an empty page with just a 301 redirect to the real product page www.CompanyX.com/ProductY This to transfer link juice to the real product page in case someone backlinks to ProductY.com
Not sure if this could help as well

Hi Luca,
I would go with www.CompanyX.com/ProductY and the reason is same using existing domain authority of CompanyX.com.
Thanks

Hi Luca,
in my opinion the best way to proceed is to use your old domain that has a good domain authority and create a subfolder on it, with internak link/links in the Homepage to it. A new website in a new domain will do nothing in a extremely competitive market.
I don't understand the second part of your question. A new website will stop existing if you redirect it with a 301 redirect to the folder on the old domain, and if it's new, it wont give any authority to the page of your product on the old domain.
What I could suggest you in terms of SEO, is to create that new page in the old domain and proceed with a little quality link building campaign destined to that url (quality press articles could be a good option), and probably a social media campaign also would help directly to the promotion of the product and indirectly to the SEO of the product page.
Hope that helps

Structured Data and Google Rich Cards for products
It appears Google is moving towards the Rich Cards JSON-LD for all data. https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2016/05/introducing-rich-cards.html However on an ecommerce site when I have schema.org microdata structured data inline for a product and then I add the JSON-LD structured data Google treats that as two products on the page even though they are the same. To make the matter more confusing Bing doesn't appear to support JSON-LD. I can go back to the inline structured data only, but that would mean when Rich Cards for products eventually come I won't be ready. What do you recommend I do for long term seo, go back to the old or press forward with JSON-LD?

SEO implication of adding large number of new product pages
If I have an eCommerce website containing 10,000 product pages and then I add 10,000 new product pages using a bulk upload (with limited/basic but unique content), does this pose any SEO risk? I am obviously aware of the risks of adding a large number of low quality content to the website, which is not the case here, however what I am trying to ascertain is whether simply doubling the number of pages in itself causes any risk to our SEO efforts? Does it flag to the Search Engines that something "spammy" is happening (even if its not)

Image URL Change Catastrophe
We have a site with over 3mm pages indexed, and an XML sitemap with over 12mm images (312k indexed at peak). Last week our traffic dropped off a cliff. The only major change we made to the site in that time period was adding a DNS record for all of our images that moved them from a SoftLayer Object Storage domain to a subdomain of our site. The old URLs still work, but we changed all the links from across our site to the new subdomain. The big mistake we made was that we didn't update our XML sitemap to the new URLs until almost a week after the switch (totally forgot that they were served from a process with a different config file). We believe this was the cause of the issue because: The pages that dropped in traffic were the ones where the images moved, while other pages stayed more or less the same. We have some sections of our property where the images are, and have always been, hosted by Amazon and their rankings didn't crater. Same with pages that do not have images in the XML sitemap (like list pages). There wasn't a change in geographic breakdown of our traffic, which we looked at because the timing was around the same time as Pigeon. There were no warnings or messages in Webmaster Tools, to indicate a manual action around something unrelated. The number of images indexed in our sitemap according Webmaster Tools dropped from 312k to 10k over the past week. The gap between the change and the drop was 5 days. It takes Google >10 to crawl our entire site, so the timing seems plausible. Of course, it could be something totally unrelated and just coincidence, but we can't come up with any other plausible theory that makes sense given the timing and pages affected. The XML sitemap was updated last Thursday, and we resubmitted it to Google, but still no real change. Anyone had a similar experience? Any way to expedite the climb back to normal traffic levels? URL for New Product
Hi, We are creating a section on our established existing website to display our new marketplace product & associated category pages. This marketplace will be a section of the site where our users can sell online training courses that they've created. It will be branded on our site as the Marketplace. Is it important to include 'marketplace' in the URL? Or would it be better to include a relevant keyword such as 'training-courses' instead? Or both? I've assumed I shouldn't use both as that would increase the length of the URLs and number of subfolders.

Rel=Canonical URLs?
If I had two pages: PageA about Cats PageB about Dogs If PageA had a link rel=canonical to PageB, but the content is different, how would Google resolve this and what would users see if they searched "Cats" or "Dogs?" If PageA 301 redirected to PageB, (no content in PageA since it's 301 redirected), how would Google resolve this and what would users see if they searched "Cats" or "Dogs?"
