Subdomain vs Subdirectory - Specific Case: A big blog in a subdomain
-
Hi.
First of all, I love MOZ and learned a lot about SEO by reading articles here. Thanks for all the knowledge that i received here.
I read all the articles about "Subdomain vs Subdirectory" in the MOZ community and I have no doubt that subdirectories are the best option for a blog.
But, the company that I work now has a blog with more than 17.000 articles, 1.000 categories and tags, hosted on a subdomain structure.
The website has a Domain Authority of 78 (I am working to improve these numbers) and the blog subdomain has the same (78). We had 2.7 million hits per month in the blog and 4.5 million hits per month in the site.
I am advising the company to change the blog structure to subfolders inside the domain, but I'm finding resistance to the idea, because the amount of work involved in this change is enormous and there is still the fear of losing traffic.
My questions are:
Is there any risk of losing traffic with the amount of articles we have?
What do we probably get if we change the blog structure to subfolders? Could we have increased authority for the domain? More Traffic?
How can I explain to my superiors that we would probably have increase traffic for our keywords?
Is there any way to prove or test the gains from this change before we run it?
Thanks in Advance.

One of the advantages of migrating a blog into a site's structure is outside of the realm of SEO, but can be helpful in making a case to do this. I have migrated several blogs into sections of existing e-commerce sites, as "resource centers". These were not pure migrations, but rather restructuring of the content into pages whcih co-exist with merchandising on the e-commerce site. Here, the advantage is that once a visitor is attracted to a content page on the site, they are more effectively converted into an e-commerce prospect. This is especially true if the blog articles are restructured to include merchandising elements. But even if not, if the only difference is that the visitor is now on a site whose navigation structure includes all of the e-commerce merchandising, they are more likely to convert on such a site. So, the benefit is more about converting customers than attracting visitors.
One way I've tested this is to pick a relatively valuable single page, and migrate just that to an on-site page, with a one-to-one redirect. You will have to wait past an initial period where both of your pages may co-exist in the SERPs. But once the old blog page drops out and the new page comes in, then you can test the longer-term impact. Again, the number of visitors may actually be smaller, but you might more than compensate for that by converting more of those visitors.

If I redirect a subdomain, does this affect the parent domain?
Hi I have a company for example: abc.com and they have a subdomain def.abc.com with a lot of errors. These errors i believe affect the parent domain abc.com. So my company would like to redirect the subdomain to another domain altogther ex: xyz.com Can i redirect the subdomain def.abc.com to another website domain? Would this affect the parent domain in a good or bad way? Or should i be using an external links to point to a new domain for the subdomain? Trying to think what's best for SEO and the parent domain. Thanks!

Subdomained White-Label Sites
Wanted to pass along a specific use-case that I'm thinking through in the technical setup for a client. Site: http://www.abc.com is an ecommerce company that offers the ability to white-label a site so an affiliate can join and get access to the site, and ultimately get a cut of whatever is sold through that affiliate. So I join the site and get access to scott.xyz.com and can handle my business through that. From a technical standpoint, this is the proposed technical setup of the site. Canonical URLS will be set to www.xyz.com Pages on scott.xyz.com will be set to noindex, while the main www.xyz.com will be set to be indexed Webmaster Tools for scott.xyz.com will be set to have preferred domain of www.xyz.com scott.xyz.com will have separate robots.txt instructing to block crawl Questions Am I missing any steps in properly setting up the technical background of the subdomain sites? The use of subdomains isn't something that I am able to move away from. Will any links in to scott.xyz.com pass juice and authority to www.xyz.com, or does the noindex/nocrawl block that from happening? Is there anything else that I am missing? Thanks!

Do I have a Panda filter on a specific segment?
Our site gets a decent level of search traffic and doesn't have any site-wide penalty issues, but one of our sections looks like it might be under some form of filter. Unfortunately for us, they're our buy pages! Check out http://www.carwow.co.uk/deals/Volkswagen/Golf it's unique content and I've built white hat links into it, including about 5 from university websites (.ac.uk domains DA70+). If you search something like "volkswagen golf deals" the pages on page 1 have weak thin content and pretty much no links. That content section wasn't always unique, in fact the vast majority of it may well be classed as dupe content as there's no Trim data and they look like this: http://www.carwow.co.uk/deals/Fiat/Punto While we never had much volume, the traffic on all /deals/ pages appears to drop significantly around the time of the May Panda update (4.0). We're planning on completely re-launching these pages with a new design, unique trim content and a paragraph (c.200 words) about the model. Am I right in assuming that there's a Panda filter on the /deals/ segment so regardless of what I do to one deals page it won't rank well, and we have to re-do the whole section?

Wordpress - Dynamic pages vs static pages
Hi, Our site has over 48,000 indexed links, with a good mix of pages, posts and dynamic pages. For the purposes of SEO and the recent talk of "fresh content" - would it be better to keep dynamic pages as they are or manually create static pages/ subpages. The one noticable downside with dynamic pages is that they arent picked up by any sitemap plugins, you need to manually create a separate sitemap just for these dynamic links. Any thoughts??

Website, webshop and blog. Subfolders or subdomains?
Hello fellow mozzers, I've seen a lot of discussion and confusion about whether you should use subfolders or subdomains when you have a website, a blog and a webshop.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | WesleySmits
Of course with subfolders the PageRank will be more effective since it's all in one domain. On the other hand subdomains will be a better user experience since you can focus on just the webshop or just the blog. Was wondering how you guys/girls think what would be the best way to handle this.0 -
Internal links to blog posts
I am linking manually to blog posts in my site from my Home page. Our site isn't set up with an auto "Recent Posts" that shows on Home. Should I use the exact blog post title as the anchor text or do I need to create something that is not an exact match to the title of the post?

Social Media - big ranks it seems from it
Hi there, one of our big competitors is ranking first for a huge key term. We were wondering how they did it, so i went through normal processes: Age of domain - reasonable. Unique content - a little but the ranking page has pretty much none - meaning panda update isn't applying here, Back-links - nothing special really, not enough to be above everyone in my opinion. Then i had a look at social media shares, over 2,000 mainly as facebook shares. So i went on their facebook profile and it does not seem like they are spamming content on there. Are these shares from users sharing the link? if so can i find out how many per post? i imagine there is a team setup to share this content when it is published on their facebook page? It just seems so very unfair they are ranking number one like this, the content in their site is poor, it's not a relevant domain either. So much for panda update eh? Any thoughts appreciated.

What are the Best Practices for moving a blog from subdomain to domain/subcategory?
Howdy SEOmoz fans! (couldn't resist). I'm moving a wordpress blog from blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog. Trying to do it right the first time and cover all my bases. Issues I'm trying to handle correctly, in varying degrees of importance: External LInks Internal Links Google Friendly Traffic Routing in a dynamic environment (wordpress, 301, .htaccess, etc.) Thanks so much for any and all input!
