Are Old Backlinks Hurting Or Helping?

I have a ton of old backlinks for products that I no longer carry but I have redirected them to other pages within the site. I was told by an SEO expert that these links are hurting me rather than helping because people click on the links and then leave.
These backlinks are from reputable blogs, news sources etc and my spam score is only 1%.
Are these links really hurting me?

i would hire an seo agency that specialises in building white hat links. they need to work through every link, to say whether its good quality or not. i would recommend getting an excel spreadsheet of the links, and marking next to it, whether its quality or not. a link building company can then advise you on the quality of the links.

There are quite a few factors to consider. Let's start with why redirecting obsolete products can possibly hurt ranking. Most likely the scenario to which the SEO Expert was referring is that search engines may see a large volume of returns to the search results page, followed by clicking other results, as an indication of a result which does not meet users' needs.
In the case described above, it is possible for such redirects to "hurt", but only in the context of a specific query. For example, let's say you used to stock footballs. And now you no longer carry any of those. And you've redirected your old football product pages to a sporting goods category page, but where no footballs can be found. Then, yes, this might cause search visitors to return to the SERP and so it could potentially hurt. But if so, then it would be hurting for a search for "footballs". Because if the visitors were searching for something you DO have in stock, then after being redirected they wouldn't immediately return to the SERP. And so, if you no longer stock footballs, why would you worry about losing rank for the search query "footballs".
Now, with that same example, let's say that some of your football pages also ranked very highly for "gifts for athletes". And you redirect to a relevant category. Those visitors are more likely to convert. Same landing page, different search query.
For this reason, in general, it's usually a good idea to redirect the old products to relevant category pages, if you have any. There are exceptions, of course. So, the trick is to look at what kinds of terms those specific pages previously ranked for, and whether there is still value in ranking for any of those specific terms. Remember, you don't own an overall "rank" on Google. You rank for specific queries, independently.

Do links like this really help for SEO?
I was doing research with Moz's Link Explorer and one of our competitors had almost 50 links coming from sites like this. Mostly nofollow but we all know that today the nofollow can still help. My question is this: Will links like these help in any shape or matter. The reason I am asking is because Link Explorer is finding them, so I am sure Google will find them as well. Examples of sites: http://www.microlinkinc.com, http://www.cmolink.com The sites that I found via analyzing had DA 35-40 I don't want to share all urls but you get the point. Basically these sites are free keyword analyzing sites, once you put in a keyword they will bring up to 20 sites that rank for that keyword. And my research suggests that these pages stay and are crawl-able since Moz has crawled them. For example Moz says: date first seen 09/12/2018 so almost 6 months has passed but that result that was searched I am assuming has stayed. Would it make sense to search on such sites keywords that you know you are ranking for and then your site would be listed below and stay there for Google to crawl and another nofollow link in our link basket. Is my thinking correct or is it waste of time. Frankly it would take 2sec to run a search for each keyword. Any feedback and thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Davit

Backlink level of domain authority
Hi, we are trying to build on the number of good quality links. One idea we had is to provide testimonials for a number of suppliers websites. Which would include a link from our company name back to our site. Is there a certain level of domain authority we should only do this for? Ways to remove spammy backlinks
Hello everyone, I got hit with an algorithm penalty and need to start removing old backlinks ASAP. Does anyone have any good resources on how best to ask webmasters for removal? PR1 and PR2 backlinks
We're doing some content marketing. I've heard that it is a good idea to target even PR1 and PR2 sites (small DA sites). I'm concerned about these sites disappearing after a few months, as we've found that losing a backlink can sting a bit and be worse than never having it. Though this isn't as big a deal any more. Anyways, can somebody say when a PR1/PR2 backlink would be appropriate to go after? Some of them would be easy and if it's appropriate I'd like to include them. So far they would only pass our standards if they are Above PR0 Look like a white hat, quality site from the outside Have a clean backlink profile Look like they're going to stick around Successful Social Media Accounts a plus What are you guys' criteria for including these sites? Backlink reports in OSE, the good and the bad!
Hi all Mozers, I have a couple of questions re the backlink reports in Open Site Explorer. In the introductory video Rand suggests that you can indentify backlinks that are a) Having a positive effect, and b) Having a negative effect on SEO campaigns. Do you identify such links using the domain/page authority of the linking page? Also, we know we have more links than OSE is reporting, does this mean that the links that are not reported are not helping our SEO campaign? Many thanks in advance, much appreciated. Lee
