Influence The Google Knowledge Box/Knowledge Graph

Hi guys,
Not sure what the correct terminology is, i think its called the knowledge box. Screenshot:
Anyway i'm referring to the box which sometimes appears above organic listings which either explains the definition of a something like the case above or provides information regarding searchers query.
I was wondering if anyone knows how to get the knowledge box appearing when its not being displayed for a query it should be or influence what is contained in the box?
Has anyone seen any good write ups about this?

That is a pretty good example you have there of a slightly ... unexpected ... knowledge box!
The knowledge box can draw data from a number of places, as Ron mentions schema markup and google plus pages are used as are other online sources like wikipedia (which is the source in your example) and freebase listings. Dr Pete has written a number of posts about this which might help (here, here and here for example) and another good article on 'hacking' the knowledge graph here.
The particular case you mention is a definition box and is driven from wikipedia and might be pretty difficult to change, if you are looking to influence knowledge graph data about a company or an entity the above links should help.

The knowledge graph is driven by schema. I would go to schema.org. Learn it, live it, love it ;). If you are on the word press platform there are several plug ins that will help you set up your schema for you. If you have not read this link it does a good job explaining why this resource wad created and what Google's goals are: http://www.google.com/insidesearch/features/search/knowledge.html
The other source of this information is the Google+ Page for the company. I strongly recommend that you fill this out completely. I would strongly recommend your client upload relevant pictures with good alternative text for each shot. This information can get replicated to the knowledge graph as well.

Homepage disappeared from Google
Hello, Since 2 weeks, our website is losing positions in Google. After years on the first page, we dropped for our main keyword to the 3rd page. Seems that all the positions we lost, were ranking with the homepage. Now, we are on the 3rd page but with a less important page. How is it possible that only the homepage disappeared? Google WMT/search console: Thousands of "Links to your site" even only one back-link from a website.

Google and PDF indexing
It was recently brought to my attention that one of the PDFs on our site wasn't showing up when looking for a particular phrase within the document. The user was trying to search only within our site. Once I removed the site restriction - I noticed that there was another site using the exact same PDF. It appears Google is indexing that PDF but not ours. The name, title, and content are the same. Is there any way to get around this? I find it interesting as we use GSA and within GSA it shows up for the phrase. I have to imagine Google is saying that it already has the PDF and therefore is ignoring our PDF. Any tricks to get around this? BTW - both sites rightfully should have the PDF. One is a client site and they are allowed to host the PDFs created for them. However, I'd like Mathematica to also be listed. Does having all client websites on same server/same Google Analytics red flag Google?
If you have several clients, and they are all on the same server, and also under ONE Google Analytics account, will that negatively impact with Google? They all have different content and addresses, some have the same template, but with different images.

Why is this site not indexed by Google?
Hi all and thanks for your help in advance. I've been asked to take a look at a site, http://www.yourdairygold.ie as it currently does not appear for its brand name, Your Dairygold on Google Ireland even though it's been live for a few months now. I've checked all the usual issues such as robots.txt (doesn't have one) and the robots meta tag (doesn't have them). The even stranger thing is that the site does rank on Yahoo! and Bing. Google Webmaster Tools shows that Googlebot is crawling around 150 pages a day but the total number of pages indexed is zero. It does appear if you carry out a site: search on Google however. The site is very poorly optimised in terms of title tags, unnecessary redirects etc which I'm working on now but I wondered if you guys had any further insights. Thanks again for your help.

Google News URL Structure
Hi there folks I am looking for some guidance on Google News URLs. We are restructuring the site. A main traffic driver will be the traffic we get from Google News. Most large publishers use: www.site.com/news/12345/this-is-the-title/ Others use www.example.com/news/celebrity/12345/this-is-the-title/ etc. www.example.com/news/celebrity-news/12345/this-is-the-title/ www.example.com/celebrity-news/12345/this-is-the-title/ (Celebrity is a channel on Google News so should we try and follow that format?) www.example.com/news/celebrity-news/this-is-the-title/12345/ www.example.com/news/celebrity-news/this-is-the-title-12345/ (unique ID no at the end and part of the title URL) www.example.com/news/celebrity-news/celebrity-name/this-is-the-title-12345/ Others include the date. So as you can see there are so many combinations and there doesnt seem to be any unity across news sites for this format. Have you any advice on how to structure these URLs? Particularly if we want to been seen as an authority on the following topics: fashion, hair, beauty, and celebrity news - in particular "celebrity name" So should the celebrity news section be www.example.com/news/celebrity-news/celebrity-name/this-is-the-title-12345/ or what? This is for a completely new site build. Thanks Barry

Sitelink demotion from Google Webmaster
HI Everybody, When I search Vallnord on Google one of the sitelinks takes you to a site that does not exists. In order to avoid this sitelink to appear I Demoted that URL using Google Webmaster. Any idea how much time will this take in order to see the results? Regards, G.

Does Google prefer Wordpress Blogs?
In creating a regular brochure website such as one for a dentist or doctor, do you see any SEO benefit to having it based in a Wordpress blog? I do see the SEO benefit of having an actual blog on the site and continually updating that, but simply using the Wordpress platform as a CMS - does that give the site any benefit? If there is a benefit, is there a way to duplicate that advantage without going through the trouble of creating a Wordpress template for the site? Maybe just publishing a sitemap.xml, and feed, etc?
