How to answer a question matching user intent ?
-
Hello,
How do you answer questions (the famous user intent) in your content when moz keyword tool, google related searches or all the other tools on the market don't have any questions to propose ?
For example take the keyword title tag, the questions are, the optimal length, title tag definition etc...
But what about with the keyword Provence bike tours ? what are the questions people have ? It is an informational query but I can't find any questions for it with the different tools out there ?
The only one that I find are "best base for a bike tour in Provence" or "one day bicycle tour in Provence" but this isn't what I offer or do and it will be very hard to integrate in my content other than I do a blog page that answer those questions...
Is there a way to answer for example "biking in Provence" which is a keyword the keyword tool gives me ?
Thank you,
-
Thank you for the info and I will re watch the whiteboard friday as they are very useful, I agree.

Yes of course. Why not? Why should you listen to LSI graph or answer the public if they are just not picking up your niche. If you just google cycling holidays in france (or wherever) there are many many results. I can see cycling for softies and 'the chain gang' which sounds more sporty.
So this is just as I thought it might be in my previous answer. The actual words you use are not the point. If you have a good level of English and write intelligently and at the level of your audience then google will understand what you are trying to say.
My strategy would be to model your clients site structure on some of the top performers in searches for the terms you are interested in.
But getting bogged down in the semantics of keywords is a 5 year-old strategy and is going to get you into trouble with the recent update that penalises sites that try to optimise for keyword variations like having two pages for "Cycling in France" and "French Cycling Tours" These mean the same thing and rankbrain understands they mean the same thing so just choose the one that sounds most natural and relevant and run with it.
Google doesn't rank keywords anymore it ranks topics. So put together a diagram of your topics and what you want to write about (a good place to start is by googling these sites and seeing what topics are present) and then start writing articles that are relevant to your audience.
If you google "cycling vacations in Provence" all the information you need is on that first page. Right there infront of you. I'm not sure why you're trusting LSI graph and these tools when the only tool you need is google itself.
But use you r own intelligence, creativity and intuition to inform what you should be writing about. That's a strategy that never fails. And as google gets smarter and smarter it's only going to reward great content and punish people for trying to game the system.
At the end of the day you are not fighting to understand the algorithm. It's designed and changed and updated in a way that intentionally obscures its intricacies. All you can do is be authentic, helpful, accurate and comprehensive. Then mark it all up with schema and when it's done you can then think about maybe benchmarking what you've got against the number one position and you might realise you're inadvertently using words too much or haven't mentioned important phrases.
But just get the thing researched and written first and see how it does. Research should be the longest part of the process. And that involves reading through each site and each page on those sites for the top five results. That will give you a feel for what is important. Screw LSI graph. Use your own brain to solve the problem - becoming overly reliant on SEO tools can lead into a downward spiral of confusion.
But I URGE you to watch some more whiteboard fridays. All the answers are there.

Hi Ed,
Thank you for your detailed reply. So you are saying to answer questions that I can think off even though I can't find those through related searches or lsi graph ?
Then, how do you answer a question when one of the related searches is Cycling vacations in Provence ? How do you answer that with the where are , what is a, why take ? is it the way to do it ?
Thank you,
-
Hi there,
I think you're being too 'keyword focussed' here. Google doesn't rank keywords anymore it ranks 'topics'. So the first thing I might do would be to remove the local identifier in your research (not on your page). So you might get more info about bike tours. I mean they are going to be fairly and broadly similar wherever they are in the world. If you're talking about a specific location then google will know about it if you make sure that the location is in the URL and in the H1 and mentioned in the copy etc.
But I see your point, Answer The Public and LSI graph have pretty limited choices about bike tours and they are mostly just relating to different parts of the world. So go low tech. Think 'what do my people want to know about bike tours in Provence?'
Answers I can think of off the top of my head might be:
Things to take with you, what to do in an emergency, great villas and wine stops, how long is a good day's biking without fatigue for different ages, families vs couples, what are the best bikes? bike racks for my car if i'm driving? What if I want to fly and hire a bike? Where are the best places to stay.
Google loves comprehensiveness and is like a library so it likes organisation. So I'd be tempted to divide my site into main topics like couples, families, wine enthusiasts, fitness fans, stag parties, whatever are the general groups of people you have. and then include subtopics like the best bikes, ways to travel, places to stay and other elements of the tour to suit each 'customer avatar'
Go low tech, speak to your customers, use your own expertise on the topic. Tools are great but some of the best positions and number one position articles I have were just really comprehensive and well ordered, nicely written and super helpful pieces addressing a topic or group of people. So like a customer avatar.
Then at the end of each page have an FAQ and that will pick up all the long tail keywords and questions that will appear in blue in the SERP and increase your click-through-rate. Rankbrain is smart and you don't need to think about keywords anymore so much.
Just think about organising the content and covering all the bases with FAQ'a and you'll rank just fine. Even with a low domain and page authority. I have 'Veneers Cost' which is one of the most valuable dental terms imaginable in the number one position nationally here in the UK and I wrote the article before I knew a thing about SEO. I went around my dentists and asked them all what they thought and gave a no BS assessment that helps people find out how much veneers cost and makes useful comparisons rather than tries to get them in for a consultation. Watch Rand's WBF on searcher task accomplishment. That might help you. Good luck!

Any Product to Offer Users to Embed Pictures with Backlink
Wistia (video hosting) has an embed feature, which can be set up to include a backlink. In other words, a user could embed a video on their site, but would automatically create a back link to the original page where it is posted. Is there a product to do similar with pictures, where I could give users options to easily take the pictures from my website, but it would include a back link to my site when they do use such picture?

Question about New Client with Manual Actions / Partial Matches in GWT
We just signed on a new client and are gaining access to their Analytics, GWT, etc... In GWT, we quickly went to "Manual Actions" as the client stated they've been slipping in rankings the past couple months from 1 to 4 to 8 and have been staying at around 7/8 for 15 of their main keywords. Without getting into the specifics of their keyword rankings, I'm curious to know when they may have received the Partial Matches Manual Action from Google. I checked Messages and saw nothing about the Manual Actions update. Can anyone lend some advice as we are most likely going to have to put together a Disavow text file and begin sending requests to take down links. Thank you in advance. Hope this was clear enough, but let me know if you need more info. Patrick uOGsyKh.jpg

URL Question and Advice on Site Architecture
Good morning one and all, i have a specific question pertaining to my Domain Migration Website URL structure. I have a computer repair business that I am re branding and my question at this point is centrally focused on how to best handle my URL naming structure that will best suite my needs for my the Search Engines and also my customers UX while not looking SPAMMY I am a web developer and SEO and I am building a SILO Site Architecture in WordPress using Pages (not Posts) so no discussion is need on the Permalink structure. I am attaching several Images below of Screen Shots of the new site that I have designed so that you may look at them and see the Silo Architecture Layout in action for the most part. OK, here we go. Looking at the Silo Mast Head, we can see that the following Main Menu items each represent a specific Silo Theme Silo Theme # 1 - COMPUTER REPAIR Silo Theme # 2 - VIRUS REMOVAL Silo Theme # 3 - PHONE REPAIR Silo Theme # 4 - NETWORKING Silo Theme # 5 - DATA RECOVERY My specific question is, if /computer-repair/ is a main silo theme (WP -Parent Page) and /laptop-repair/ is a (Child Page) of Computer Repair is the following example below (the actual URL string) going to 'trigger' a SPAM signal to either the user or GOOGLE or both?? URL String: http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/computer-repair/laptop-repair/ Here's another example with the VIRUS REMOVAL SILO http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal/malware-removal/ Seeing how computer repair is the main silo theme that cannot be changed in the URL Structure (it can) but I wont change it seeing how COMPUTER REPAIR is the single largest keyword phrase used by individuals when they are looking for computer repair. Secondly, - LAPTOP REPAIR is also a Keyword Phrase that that has HIGH search queries that I am trying to rank for and that too (ideally) should also not changed! How do I deal with this situation? Or, am I seeing this in a overly paranoid way? I currently have the site allowing only my IP Address so I am afraid that the screen shots below is all that I can do on this in lieu of actually visiting the Site Currently, I have my URL Structure where Wilmington NC immediately follows the targeted keyword phrase for the Silo Theme like below http://www.pcmedicsoncall.com/virus-removal-wilmington-nc/malware-removal/ The example above, - including the location after the keyword phrase does look much more attractive and breaks it up so it does not read SPAMMY and it will help with SEO but yet another problem exists using the location after the keyword phrase which I explain in detail Below. On top of doing a complete re-branding Domain Change I am actually going to be relocating myself and my business to Charlotte, NC at the end of the summer so I have serious doubts if using Wilmington NC within the URL structure would be a wise idea considering that I will be relocating and an internal 301 Redirect on a Newly Migrated site 2-3 months after the initial site migration and site setup may have some negative impact and confuse Google and compound the situation thus much further despite the fact that it would immediately help me bounce back up with my rankings after the migration process. Thoughts a suggestions on both explained scenarios please? I have asked this specif question once already but obviously people do not read my very detailed and well thought out questions. This can also be viewed here>http://www.seomoz.org/q/need-very-urgent-advice-on-wedsite-migration-questions-please#reply_150847> Thank you Sincerely, Marshall Thompson SEOMOZ-PC-MEDICS-ON-CALL-1.jpg SEOMOZ-PC-MEDICS-ON-CALL1.jpg

Altering Breadcrumbs based on User Path to Product URL
Hi, Our products are listed in multiple categories, and as the URLs are path dependent (example.com/fruit/apples/granny-smith/, example.com/fruit/green-fruit/granny-smith/ and so forth) we canonicalise to the 'default' URL (in this case example.com/fruit/apples/granny-smith/). For mainly crawling bandwidth issues I'm looking to change all product URL's to path neutral so there is only ever one URL per product (example.com/granny-smith/), but still list the product in multiple categories. If a user comes directly to example.com/granny-smith/ then the breadcrumbs will use the default path "Fruit > Apples", however if the user navigated to the product via another category then I'd like the breadcrumbs to reflect this. I'm not worried about cloaking as it's not based on user-agent and it's very logical why it's being done so I don't expect a penalty. My question is - how do you recommend this is achieved from a technical standpoint? Many sites use path neutral product URL's (Ikea, PCWorld etc) but none alter the breadcrumbs depending upon path. Our site is mostly behind a CDN so it has to be a client side solution. I currently view the options as: Store Path to product in a cookie and/or browsers local-cache Attach the Path details after a # in the URL and use Javascript to alter breadcrumbs onload with JQuery When a user clicks to a product from a listing page, use AJAX to pull in the product info but leave the rest of the page (including the breadcrumbs) as-is, updating the URL accordingly Do you think any of these wouldn't work? Do you have a preference on which one is best? Is there another method you'd recommend? We also have "Next/Previous" functionality (links to the previous and next product URLs) on the page so I suspect we'd need to attach the path after a # and make another round trip to the server onload to update the previous and next links. Finally, does anyone know of any sites that do update the breadcrumbs depending upon path? Thanks in advance for your time FashionLux

Canonical Tag - Question
Hey, I will give a thumbs up and best answer to whoever answers my question correctly. The Canonical Tag is supposed to solve Duplication which is fine. My questions are: Does the Canonical Tag make the PR / Link Juice flow differently? If I have john.long.com/home and john.long.com but put a Canonical Tag on john.long.com/home reading john.long.com then what does this do? Does it flow the Link Equity back to john.long.com? Can you use the Canonical Tag to change PR flow in any means? If I had john.long.com/washing-machines and john.long.com/kids-toys... If I put a Canonical Tag on john.long.com/kids-toys reading john.long.com/washing-machines then would the PR from /kids-toys flow to /washing-machines or would Google just ignore this? (The pages are completely different in this example and content is completely different). Thank you.

Question about 301 redirect for trailing / ?
I am cleaning up a fairly large site. Some pages have a trailing slash on the end some don't. Some of the existing backlinks built used a trailing slash in the url and some didn't. We aren't concerned with picking a particular one but just want to get one set and stick to it from now on. I am wondering, would I clean this up within the same redirect in the htaccess file that takes care of the www and non www? example RewriteEngine On
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | PEnterprises
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com$1 [L,R=301] I currently use that to redirect the www. to the non www as you can see. However here is what I was confused about. Would this code be enough to redirect ALL pages with a / to the ones without? or would I also need to add another code (so there is 2) to my htaccess like below? RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com$1 [L,R=301] RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.com/ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com$1 [L,R=301] That way, now, even the non www pages with a trailing slash will redirect to the non www without the trailing slash. Hopefully you understand what I am getting at. I just want to redirect EVERYTHING to the non www WITHOUT a / Thank you Jake0 -
Exact match domain marketing?
Hi All, I've managed to secure a couple of exact match domains that are closely related to my main site but I'm a bit unsure of how to make best use of them. My plan is to generate revenue by ranking high for the exact match terms, moving the visitor onto the main site to take their details and payment. Naturally I want this satelite site to be very similar so that I can keep the brand continuety going and maintain a smooth transition to the main site. My main concerns however are: Will I get punished for using the same Navigation menu, logo and code as my main site? The navigation menu will link to pages on the main site, and this satelite site will most likely only consist of an index page and about 5 - 10 individual content pages. 2)I want the branding on this satelite site to be the same as my main site. Will I be punished for the difference in branding vs domain name? I know the SE's are unlikely to pick it up because the logo is an image but is there a risk of human editing? I want to link from the main site to the satelite site to give it a bit of a boost and to get through a possible sandbox. If the satelite has numerous links to the main site and the main site is linking to the satelite site will there be any benefit? Never tried to create a site like this so a bit nervous about impacting the main site. Thank in advance.
