Better to place linked-back article or post article and seek multiple links?
-
Which option is better for SEO purposes:
1. Author article for trade journal in return for link back to my home page.
2. Post article on my site and solicit links from multiple sites.
Assume links all have moderate authority.

Thanks, Ed.
I see your point, but I haven't seen a lot of viral activity when I've guest authored on good sites in the past.
So maybe I'll self-publish and try to promote links. If I don't get any links I can always take the article down and submit it.
Any additional thoughts?

This has always been a bit of a point of contention for me too. When you pitch an article then you can usually be pretty sure that it's going to attract one link - from the target. You can get in touch with someone and basically make a little agreement that you are going to write for them personally and that the piece is going to be specifically angled and targeted to make their brand or product look good. So the chances of getting it published in this way is high but you usually need a good relationship or at least an existing relationship with the site owner.
Then there's 'link-worthy' content that you put on your site and market it and hope it attracts links. This is much more speculative in my opinion because it might not be good enough to attract links and attracting links will inevitably take time as it rises to a prominent position in the SERP.
However, you forget that using the first way has the added benefit that the person you write for will want to market the content you wrote just for them to their own partners, suppliers customers and friends etc. So they will 'treat it as link-worthy content' and so long as the link is a 'naked link' so https://nakedlink.com then wherever that article gets sent you'll get a backlink from that source also.
Thew first way is the best IMO because you do all the work of writing, are guaranteed at least one good link and are guaranteed one good relationship that can be leveraged in the future. Then the difficult job of publicising the article is effectively outsourced to whomever you wrote it for because it's then in their interests to get it published on other websites to get more backlinks for them and you. Sometimes they will do a poor job but sometimes a flurry of links will come your way as they market the piece to other sites.
This has worked for us to great effect in the past with success stories and case studies and great pieces of content about other brands we like. Almost like ego-bait. I prefer to also build better relationships with the publishers so I can write again for them in the future if the content does well using different topics and attracting links to different pages on my site with anchor text (but don't overdo this, you'll end up with a penalty)
Sure there is a place for creating link-worthy content on your site and certainly if you're a Moz or a big brand this is the best strategy but for a smaller brand I'd advise creating the relationship, writing something with the target in mind that's personalised and makes them look good and something they will then want to 'trade up the chain' to quote Ryan Holiday - the master media manipulator.
So for smaller blogs it's number one and then when you're confident of a stellar article that's going to rank in 1-3 position then you can go for a skyscraper piece or a piece of 'linkworthy content' but it's much MUCH harder for smaller brands to do this and have it work. You may see no results at all.

We're looking at providing SEO for a website that has the majority of its incoming links from websites created solely to provide links. Few have bad spam rankings. How worried should I be about those links?
The majority of incoming links to a prospect's website are from website pages apparently created solely to provide links to the website. Few have high spam scores. The sites linking to the main site have versions of blogs with linked text. They seem to be providing positive SEO value now, but I'm concerned they might get noticed and hurt the main site in the future.

How much time does it take for the links to be forwarded to redirected link?
Hi there,
Link Building | | MoeezLodhi
Thank you for taking out some time for this question; I have changed the permalinks last week for a website.. I forgot to redirect old permalinks to the new one.. So I did 301 redirection, it has been 4-5 days since I did that but the links are not forwarded to the new Permalink so far.
How much time should I wait for the links to be forwarded to the new permalinks? Secondly, I am sure I have done the 301 redirect correctly, as when I go to the old url / permalink it directs me to the new permalink. So I am sure 301 is done correctly. Do I need to submit the sitemap again?0 -
Blog articles on website vs submitting to article submission sites
I had some articles created for a client. The site is on WordPress. I'm wondering if it is best to add the articles to the blog page of the website or if it is better to submit the articles to ezine articles. Or can I submit the same article to both places? Is there a strategy that should be followed generally speaking when creating content for the blog vs article submission sites? The goal is to increase the ranking for target keywords. I realize that the answers could take a lot of different directions. But generally speaking I would like to know, If I have an article where is the best place to add it to achieve better rankings for target keywords? Thanks for the help.

How to link blog posts to web pages
In past I would write blog posts and link to a static web page. The link from the blog post to the static web page would be the same keyword(s) as the web page was optimized around. With the latest Google updates, it seems like the keywords linking to the web page need to be varied, but I'm not sure what the ideal system would be?

Following Penguin, what is the best practice for a web design agency placing a footer link in client sites?
For years we have included a 'Web Design by ...' link in the footer of all client websites designed by us. However, following the Penguin update, it seems that this legitimate practice could now be penalised. Should we be removing those links from our client's sites? There are tens of thousands, all with similar or identical text! For future client sites, should we avoid these footer links altogether? Or maybe limit the link to a single page on each site?

Linking for multiple clients
We own a small web design company that both creates the sites and then does the seo marketing for them once they are created. The business has grown to have over 100 customers. However, as we sell more sites we find our SEO team is somewhat short staffed. So far, the area that suffers the most is the link building aspect of SEO. The sites we build are for dentists and usually only contain 10 to 20 pages. Enough to list the services they offer and where they are located. Here is my question: We need to get the most effective links possible for over 100 sites with just a couple of employees. What would be the most effective links to try for. We cant chase down every stray link for our doctors. And, we don't have time to do in-depth research for each client each month as we are already pushing ourselves to the limit. In time, we will have more employees to help share the SEO load. But for now, where should we be spending our time most effectively? We can usually only budget one or two hours per client each month for linking. Thanks for any advice you can offer.
