Will a Media Wiki guides section affect my sites SEO?
-
Hello,
I currently run a Wordpress site that has a large guides section. I've reached the point where a lot of the larget guides need to be split into smaller posts which then link to each other. As we all know, long guides are not always user friendly.
I've taken this oppurtunity to revamp the guides section and I am considering using Media Wiki to turn the Wordpress posts in to a full Wiki Knowledge Base. However this raises some questions for me..
1. Will doing this impact my sites SEO?
2. Does Media Wiki use internal nofollow links?
3. Are there dangers of duplicate content?
4. Do you have any experience using Media Wiki, and what are your thoughts?
I'd appreciate your views on this problem.
Thanks
Joe

I do, I run a pretty large wiki (2400 articles, over 1000 users) and I can definitely vouch for it. Out of the box it uses canonical tags as well (for redirect pages), knows which pages it should index and which it shouldn't (edit & login pages for instance are noindexed) and Google can handle an out of the box install pretty well.
If needed you can even use one of the meta plugins to optimize your descriptions, titles and noindex/nofollow certain pages or even namespaces. (I wrote the AdvancedMeta plugin, but there's plenty of others).

Did you decide to use Media Wiki, or to take another path for your knowledge base? Q&A has become a lot more active since you first asked your question, so if you have follow-up questions, you might start a new thread with any further questions you have, and you'll probably see more of a response.

Great, thanks Kris. I've been reading up since my post and you're right about internal links being dofollow.
Do you have any experience using Media Wiki?

you may see some initial drop as google figures out where your content went and how its being repurposed (even with smart 301ing you are still chunking up the content)
HOWEVER, wiki-style internal linking has proven to be very effective! I mean... all those rich anchors, links in the content instead of the nav.. these are all nice signals.
Im fairly certain wiki comes outta the box with dofollow for internal links and nofollow for externals however you can change all of this stuff with settings and plugins.
All in all I'd say if you are willing to commit the time its going to be a net gain both for your rankings (over time) and more importantly for your users.

SEO Optimization for Sales Page
Hi, I am new to eCommerce. Traditionally I have run a couple of semi-successful websites relying largely on Adsense revenue and affiliate income. So I have a bit of experience with on page and off page SEO. This time around I am creating a membership site and also sell eBooks as bundles that non members can buy. My question is, should I SEO optimize the sales page for my eBook or use another content page that links to the sales page. For example, if I am selling an ebook on Dog Training and targeting the main KW "Dog Training Tips", should my sales page be optimized for "Dog Training Tips"? The reason I ask is because typically Sales pages do not provide a lot of useful information but are more geared around selling the product. The other option would be to create a helpful information page targeted for "Dog Training Tips" and lead users to my sales page through contextual links, banners, popups (I hate popups), etc. This would be the approach for the other LSI keywords anyways. Any thought would be appreciated.

Paying someone for SEO help?
Moz has been very helpful but since my site was hit by Google Panda and I am getting very little organic traffic, I am thinking about having someone who really knows SEO take a look and give me some help. However, I have no idea how to find someone reputable. Any advice for hiring someone for SEO help (on a budget?)

SEO for EMD
Hi, I bought ForSaleInAZ.com for my real estate website. Google Keyword Tool estimate 301k local searches for that term. I would like to capitalize on this by building this site with good content. My question to you, besides the search being the URL, what is the best practice to specifically promote the "For Sale In AZ" phrase? Should it be in the Page Title, Meta Description, Content H1 & H2 tags, Image tag? Or, is it being in the URL good enough...so all I have to do is build good content? I understand not to over do it but I could use your advice. Can you please give me some suggestions/ guidelines to follow specifically to my EMD? SEO Expertise Level: I am comfortable and have the decent understanding but, by no means, an expert! Thanks, Carl

Moving a site as a folder of existing one
We have the following case: Site A with domain authority 65 and 2,750 linking root domains (139K total links) and Site B with domain authority 68 and 1,336 linking root domains (38K total links) There's a suggestion to move Site A as a folder of Site B so it becomes something like this: domainB.com/domainA using 301 redirects for the existing domain A. We'd like to better understand what such move will result in. I imagine at first Site A will drop in rankings, but after that will it be better for it to be under Site B domain? Also, moving all the pages a step behind in the URL path may slightly affect their rankings. What do you think? Would you move Site A or leave it as a separate domain? I understand there can't be an exact estimation what will happen, but I'll appreciate your thoughts.

References and SEO?
Hi Everyone, I am really new to the SEO world (having come from paid search), so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I noticed in Webmaster Tools that the top 25 keywords or so that Google thinks my site is about are keywords pulled from our references pages. Our site has a ton of authoritative content, most of which have corresponding reference pages with overlapping sources. Is this a problem? I am a little concerned that the keywords Google thinks are the most relevant to my site are really the least relevant. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! nina
