Google Products / Google Shopping
-
My client has a site with products a lot of which are so similar in function that for usability reasons we have combined some products on the same pages.
We want to get into Google Shopping, but on the face of it the Google feed seems to want unique urls per product.
I guess we could have products on the same page then have single pages as well, though that could generate duplicate content.
We could also try pointing several products to 1 URL, does anyone know if this would work?
Or can anyone suggest any work arounds?

Thanks for taking the time to answer guys...
"take the time out to highlight the slightly different features of each product and put each of them on a different page."
I would if I could the differences are minor, sometimes only about the product size.
I am more concerned about user experience, adding them on different pages will overwhelm the site with very similar products.
Each page typically has 4 product variations I know its not ideal but is there any reason why I cannot pick one of the variations and leave the other 3 out?

I'd give each product a unique URL and its own content, but for displaying the products some shopping carts offer a Bundle or Grouped Product option.
Also, you could just group products under a Category page to show to non-Google Shopping traffic, and use Related Items links to promote similar products on each individual Product Page

I am not keen on using the canonical tag as an upfront solution. I would say to take the time out to highlight the slightly different features of each product and put each of them on a different page. If you find that difficult to do, then you can noindex the pages you that are duplicates and nofollow all internal links to these pages. Finally, I would highlight the difference of each product in the title of the product or Google Shopping will have a very hard differentiating these products.

Sounds to me like you could give each product it's own URL for that purpose, then to avoid the duplicate content issue just rel=canonical those pages back to the page where they actualy live.
I haven't had to do this yet myself though, so I'm sure someone will jump in and say for sure

Google Site Warnings via Phone?
I received a voicemail earlier stating that "there are two issues with your company's current Google listing that we need to discuss with the business owner. it is very important that we talk as soon as possible. press 1 to speak with an agent immediately. press 8 if you have already verified your account information or if you are no longer in business and want to be removed from this list. thank you" that's it. no contact number, no reference to what listing or what type of listing (organic, places, etc.) Checked GWT, GA, and the Gmail - there are no warnings or messages in any of those accounts. Has anyone else experienced this?

Get Google To Crawl More Pages Faster on my Site
We opened our database of about 10 million businesses to be crawled by Google. Since Wednesday, Google has crawled and indexed about 2,000 pages. Google is crawling us at about 1,000 pages a day now. We need to substantially increase this amount. Is it possible to get Google to crawl our sites at a quicker rate?

Ideal SEO / Social Media Employee Skillset
I’ve been wondering recently what makes a good SEO / Social Media employee. It seems to me that SEO and Social Media are in the process of merging into a single role. What are your thoughts on the skills that this new world SEO / Social Media employee would need? Or do you think these roles should ideally remain separate and that a “traditional” SEO is more what is needed? My own role has been moving much more towards social media recently and I was wondering if this was a common trend!

Will Google ever begin penalising bad English/grammar in regards to rankings and SEO?
Considering Google seem to be on a great crusade with all their algorithm updates to raise the overall "quality" of content on the Internet, i'm a bit concerned with their seeming lack of action towards penalising sites that contain terrible English. I'm sure you've all noticed this when you attempt to do some proper research via Google and come across an article that "looks" to be what you're after, then you click through and realise it's obviously been either put together in a rush by someone not paying attention or putting much effort in, or been outsourced for cheap labour to another country whose workers aren't (close to being) native speakers. It's getting really old trying to make sense of articles that have completely incorrect grammar, entirely missing words, verb tenses that don't make any sense, randomly over-extravagant adjectives thrown in just as padding, etc. etc. No offense to all those from non-native speaking countries who are attempting to make a few bucks online, but this for me is becoming by far more of an issue in terms of "quality" of information online as opposed to some of the other search issues that are being given higher priority, and it just seems strange that Google have been so blasé about it up to this point - especially given so many of these articles and pages are nothing more than outsourced filler for cheap traffic. I understand it's probably hard to code in something so advanced, but it would go a long way towards making the web a better place in my opinion. Anyone else feeling the same way? Thoughts?

Google Trends - what did you do?
So is it me or did Google make some crazy changes - The "trends" are no longer anchored to appropriate articles etc... Why do you think they would remove something so useful to us? http://www.google.com/trends/ - check it out for yourself. tumblr_m5jh04D65G1ry8grko1_1280.png

Schedule for Panda / Farmer Update rollout for non English sites?
Hey Mozzers, I just read about the global rollout of googles Panda/Farmer Update for English queries, e.g. at searchengineland. Has anyone read something about when google is planning to roll out the update for non-English speaking countries, i.e. queries in other languages? I googled a bit but couldn't find anything, not even speculations. Cheers, Frank
