If a page isn't linked to or directly sumitted to a search engine can it get indexed?
-
Hey Guys,
I'm curious if there are ways a page can get indexed even if the page isn't linked to or hasn't been submitted to a search engine.
To my knowledge the following page on our website is not linked to and we definitely didn't submit it to Google - but it's currently indexed:
<cite>takelessons.com/admin.php/adminJobPosition/corp</cite>
Anyone have any ideas as to why or how this could have happened? Hopefully I'm missing something obvious
Thanks,
Jon

You're welcome Jon.
That's a good question. I don't know the official answer on that one, though suspect that Google does check to see if the page exists, mainly because often it will be a valid URL that somebody types in the search box instead of the address bar. If Google don't have that page in their index, they'd at least like to consider adding it.
http://www.google.com/addurl.html is the URL adding page for Google as you'll already know. As well as Google relying on people to use this form, they will also, I suspect, crawl URLs that are entered into a search box. Makes sense to me that Google would at least visit these pages searched on, though can't be sure.

Simon

Thanks for the responses guys!
Are either of you aware of whether or not Google would ever index a page if someone searched for it? For example, say someone did a Google search for the URL I specified above. Would Google ever get curious and then try and crawl it?
Thanks again for taking the time to help out

Hey there Jon.
It seems that it was last indexed almost a month ago on Oct. 21, 2011. I would suggest that you follow Simon's advice on the NoFollow tag.
Additionally, check your GWT to ensure that it is not indexed...If it is, then try to resubmit it to get indexed (I know, I know, it doesn't make sense), but it will send out a message to crawl it. NoFollow, NoIndex tells the spider NOT HERE....Anywho, good luck with that and let us know how it turned out!
Cheers!
P.S. At least it's not indexed in Bing

Hi Jon
This is a strange one, I too haven't found a link to your admin page. There could have been one at some point in the past. Google's bot is rather clever at finding pages on the so-called 'invisible web', so best to request non-indexing of pages that you don't want indexed (covered below).
You're right in thinking that search bots follow links to find and index pages, whether it be an external or internal site link or a sitemap link. They also find pages through actual submissions.
- I'd suggest modifying the Robots tag on your admin page, include a 'NoIndex' just before the NoFollow'.
- Also include a Disallow command in your Robots.txt file for this admin page, and perhaps all pages within the admin section.
- Then, request the URL be removed from Google's index via Google Webmaster Tools ("Site configuration", "Crawler access", "Remove URL").
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

How do I get my pages to go from "Submitted" to "Indexed" in Google Webmaster Tools?
Background: I recently launched a new site and it's performing much better than the old site in terms of bounce rate, page view, pages per session, session duration, and conversions. As suspected, sessions, users, and % new sessions are all down. Which I'm okay with because the the old site had a lot of low quality traffic going to it. The traffic we have now is much more engaged and targeted. Lastly, the site was built using Squarespace and was launched the middle of August. **Question: **When reviewing Google Webmaster Tools' Sitemaps section, I noticed it says 57 web pages Submitted, but only 5 Indexed! The sitemap that's submitted seems to be all there. I'm not sure if this is a Squarespace thing or what. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!

Linking to CMS page ID
Hi all, Is it that detrimental to SEO if you link to the CMS page ID of a URL rather than the text URL of a page even if when you look at the source code Google sees it as a text URL? Thanks! 🙂

Can I canonical the same page?
I have a site where I have 500+ Page listing pages and I would like to rel=canonical them to the master page. Example: http://www.example.com//articles?p=18 OR http://www.example.com/articles?p=65 I plan on adding this to the section from of the page template so it goes to all pages - When I do this, I will also add the canonical to the page I am directing the canonical. Is this a bad thing? Or allowed?

Why aren't review score metadata appearing on the SERP for this page?
The page in question is: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/sony-rx100/sony-rx100A.HTM Review metadata checks out in google's rich metadata tester, but doesn't get displayed on the SERP for "Sony RX100" (see second page).

Have a client that migrated their site; went live with noindex/nofollow and for last two SEOMoz crawls only getting one page crawled. In contrast, G.A. is crawling all pages. Just wait?
Client site is 15 + pages. New site had noindex/nofollow removed prior to last two crawls.

2 links on home page to each category page ..... is page rank being watered down?
I am working on a site that has a home page containing 2 links to each category page. One of the links is a text link and one link is an image link. I think I'm right in thinking that Google will only pay attention to the anchor text/alt text of the first link that it spiders with the anchor text/alt text of the second being ignored. This is not my question however. My question is about the page rank that is passed to each category page..... Because of the double links on the home page, my reckoning is that PR is being divided up twice as many times as necessary. Am I also right in thinking that if Google ignore the 2nd identical link on a page only one lot of this divided up PR will be passed to each category page rather than 2 lots ..... hence horribly watering down the 'link juice' that is being passed to each category page?? Please help me win this argument with a developer and improve the ranking potential of the category pages on the site 🙂

Why would a link shown on OSE appear differently than the page containing the link?
I recently traded links with a site that I will call www.example.com When I used open site explorer to check the link it came back with a different page authority as www.example.com/index.htm yet the link does appear on the www.example.com page. Why would this be?

What Are The Page Linking Options?
Okay, so I'm working with a site that has pretty good domain authority, but the interior pages are not well linked or optimized. So, it ranks for some terms, but everything goes to the home page. So, I'd like to increase the authority of the interior pages. The client is not wild about spreading targeted juice via something like a footer. They also don't like a "Popular Searches" style link list. The objection is that it's not attractive. They currently use cute euphemisms as the linking text, so like "cool stuff" instead of "sheepskin seat covers." In that made up example, they'd like to rank for the latter, but insist on using the former. What about a slide show with alt text/links? Would that increase the authority of those pages in a term-targeted kinda way? Are there other options? Does it matter how prominent those links are, like footers not as good as something higher up the page? They currently use a pull-down kind of thing that still results in some pages having no authority. Do bots use that equally well? Thanks!
