Changing my web design
-
When you redo your website, I assume that sometimes it might turn out worse. For example, users might just like your prior design better and thus your prior design might actually have better stats.
My blog doesn't receive a lot of hits. I have about 1500 hits per months. I don't think that i have enough traffic for A/B testing. Is there a work around to see if my new blog design does better or worse?

Hi James,
As a usability expert and both a web designer & internet marketer, the topic of usability and the effectiveness of your website engaging and creating a memorable web experience with your audience is one that is always discussed. Whether or not your website is effectively communicating your vision, goals, ideas with your audience is the key to a successful website. To understand this, we must look at the underlying core of the website itself.
Not all websites that feature a sophisticated and classy or well designed User Interface bodes well with either SEO or Usability. In fact many websites may feature a spiffy design but just don't attract the users in a clearly defined manner.
When it comes to A/B testing, as Simon mentioned you can conduct tests at that level but as mentioned it will take much longer. As he mentioned Google's Website Optimizer is a great tool.
Another way you can easily identify weak areas of your website is through Google's Analytics. Now this can be trickier, but you can create various goals and or funnels to identify how users are progressing through your website. With this information we want to look at key areas, bounce rate, exit, time on page, time on site, etc to understand how our users are interacting and engaging.
Let's take this for example, let's say we create a landing page within our website to sell a book. We create the content, banners, images, etc. Now we can set up goals and funnels to see how or even if our users get to this area. Are we directing them clearly? If we are getting a high bounce rate or users are not even getting to this area, then something is seriously wrong with our website. So we look at usability, engagement, and interaction.
This is a basic outline of utilizing Analytics to achieve and idea of what may not be working properly for your website.
Now on to other areas of usability testing. Here are a bunch of different links / resources as well as services that can help in testing your website:
- http://mashable.com/2011/09/30/website-usability-tools/
One last thing, if utilizing social networks, you could ask for feedback. For instance on Facebook, ask fans to provide feedback of your website. Another option would be adding a feedback section on your website and get users to submit what they think. This is different than A/B testing but can be very useful in understanding how your website is perceived. This also creates a high level of user interaction and ensures your users that you are a real business - so Brand Development / Awareness is a supplemental achievement!

Hi James
A good question. 1,500 visits per month is enough for A/B testing, just means that it takes longer to get any useful or conclusive results than say if you had 1,500 visits per day or week.
Check out 'Google Website Optimizer' if you haven't already, is really useful for such testing.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Looking for live web examples of Medical schema
Has anyone seen a hospital system or medical clinic properly employ schema markup to their sites? This seems like very new territory, and we want to do it right by our client. Are there any best practices I need to look out for?

Have you changed 100's of links on your site? Tell me the why's, the how's and what's!
Hello there. If you've changed 100's of links, then I'd like for you to contribute to this thread. I've created a new URL structure for a website with 500+ posts in an effort to make it more user friendly, and more accessible to crawlers. I was just about to pull the trigger, when I started reading up on the subject and found that I might have a few surprises waiting for me around the corner. The status of my site. 500 posts 10 different categories 50+ tags No Backlinks No recent hits (according to Google Analytics) No rankings. I'm going to keep roughly 75% of the posts, and put them in different (new) categories to strengthen SEO for the topic which I'd like to rank multiple categories for, and also sorted a list with content which I'd like to 410. Created new structure created new categories Compiled list of old URLs, and new URLs New H1, Meta Title & Descriptions New tags It looks simple on paper, but I've got problems executing it. **Question 1. **What do I need to keep in mind when deleting posts, categories, and tags - besides 410, Google URL removal? Question 2. What do I do with all the old posts that I am going to re-direct? Each post has between 10-15 internal links. I've started manually removing each link in old posts before 301'ing them. The reason I'm doing this is control the UX, as well as internal link juice to strengthen main categories. Am I on the right path? On a side note, I've prepared for the 301'ing by changing the H1's, meta data and adding alt text to images. But I can't help but to think that just deleting the old posts, and copying over the content to the new url (with the original dates set) would be a better alternative. Any contribution to this thread would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Changing top level navigation between site sections
We've got an internal proposal to change our top level nav depending on the section of the site. For example, on our homepage it might read: Products, Library, About with relevant links dropping down below. As we have varied products, the drop down underneath it would include the various families. When arriving on the product family page the top-level nav would change to represent more specific offerings. For example: xxx.com 1. Products; 2. Library; 3. About xxx.com/xxx 1. Product family 1; 2. Product family 2; 3. Product family 3; 4. Library; 5. About What are the SEO/UX implications of this? It seems confusing but allows more specific navigation via the main nav depending on the section of the site. Also it seems that an alternating TLN might not be too Google-friendly.

Pushstate and Infinite Scrolling Article Pages: Is it detrimental to not change URLs as the page is being scrolled?
I've noticed a recent trend of news sites using infinite scrolling on article pages to garner more pageviews and I can assume serve up more ads. Here is an overview. Here is an article from NBC news that uses this technique: http://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/music/grammys-2016-here-s-why-adele-s-performance-was-out-n519186 Studies have shown that this technique has decreased bounce rates by +15% for some sites. My question is: If a site is using the technique without changing URLs as the user scrolls down what overall negative effects does this have? Obviously you wouldn't be getting credit for the extra pageviews but I was wondering if there were any indexation implications with this. Here is an example of article infinite scrolling without changing the URL: http://www.wftv.com/news/national-content/deputies-wife-attacks-husband-because-he-didnt-get-her-a-valentines-day-gift/87691927

How to judge a good website designer?
I am looking into hiring a company to redesign my website. What tips can someone give me about how to judge whether a company is good or not? I am most interested in the website being designed to work well with SEO and crawls. Do I compare the rankings of the websites they have in their portfolio? I'm so petrified that I'm going to make the wrong choice.

Where to find high quality (affordable) web designers?
Hi everyone, I am looking for find high quality web designers that are affordable. I am open to many options. There are several things I have looked into. 1. I have looked for designers via CSS galleries, but I don't really know how to get in touch with designers or find them. Rand recently talked about this in a webinar, but if anyone has specific insights on how to find people this way, please let me know. 2. I have also looked into website design contests from sites such as: DesignCrowd.com 99designs.com CrowdSpring.com DesignContest.com I haven't used these services and I was wondering if anyone has experience with design contests. 3. I have looked into the option of hiring a freelancer on oDesk or a similar freelancer site. I don't really know the cost, how to find a good designer, how to avoid inexperienced but cheap designers and all the other such roadblocks that come along with freelancers. If anyone could provide insight into this, it would be greatly appreciated.

Wordpress Design Pricing
Why on earth did you say you could get a quality template designed and coded for a few hundred bucks? Im a professional designer, I expect to make 75 an hour which is actually low. And you think I should be able to design and code a high quality wordpress site in a few hours. You are killing my business and encouraging people to hire low quality developers or take work out of America. Im very offended by your comments. Why dont you try living on 5 bucks an hour !! You just spit in the face of all good designers.
