Have I Set my joomla site map correctly as google not picking up articles
-
Hi here is my site map http://www.in2town.co.uk/sitemap-xml?sitemap=1
But i am concerned that i have not set my joomla site map correctly. The reason why i think this is, because i have a lot of articles on the site and google are not picking them up in my google webmaster tools.
On my old site google was quick to pick up all the articles.
Can anyone offer me any help on this and let me know if my site map should be set to show all of my articles

Seems to me you might be spending some time doing this:
I think what you want to do is:
- Discover all the old urls that were bringing traffic
- 301 redirect them to the relevant new urls on the updated site using htaccess (assuming you're on apache)
- [optional: submit a sitemap to google with the old urls to encourage the crawler to see that they're now redirected]
- [if not doing step 3, might be worth doing this as the first step] create a sitemap for the new site (I have trouble with xmap so I don't use it, would love to though since it automates things - I know many people like it) try manually creating one with say xenu or integrity
- submit the new sitemap to bing and google
- sit back fingers crossed
- keep tracking 404 errors in gwt to identify urls you've missed that can be added to the 301 list
there are posts on seomoz and elsewhere that cover how to do 301 redirects in htaccess, how to use xenu etc.
good luck!

EDIT: One other thing to remember, (particularly if you've suffered data loss in the past) is backup - search for akeeba backup for joomla, it's free and works brilliantly.

hi, how would i add the old urls to the site. there are lots of urls from the old site that i have had to change.
What i mean by this is, when we changed the site, we asked the hosting company to move all the data over, they made a huge error and because of this we lost thousands of pages of content and thousands of pages of links
If you could explain about adding the old urls and if this is possible.
Buit what i had on the old xmap was, it was showing all the content that i had, which made the sitemap look very long, but by doing this google was adding it and it was showing in my google webmaster tools, but now it is only showing that 13 pages have been listed by google instead of all the content pages that we have.
On the old site by doing this, it showed thousands of content pages listed in google in webmaster tools, but at the moment it is only showing our main sections
With ref to the coronation street, it is because we are adding this over the weekend
any help would be great. It has been a nightmare building the new site after the hosting company lost all of our data

Have you changed the urls from the old site to the new one? If so, I'd be inclined to create a sitemap with everything and submit it to encourage the pages to be crawled.
Some of the categories in the sitemap don't have any content - that looks a bit odd - (e.g. coronation street)
Also, if the URL structure is all new, have you 301'd the old pages?

When will all of Google Maps be the same again?
As many of you are aware that the pigeon update was only applied to the new Google maps resulting in very different search results for Google local business. When you search for a business on old Google maps then you get totally different results vs the new Google maps. Some businesses totally disappeared completely from the search results. I have done my research and found out that it's because the new Algo was only applied to the new maps. Also new algo does not apply to other countries. Well the reason I posted this topic is because I have noticed that all the new Google Business listings I am verifying for my clients are all being put under the old Google maps and not the new ones. They come up fine when searching from old maps but not the new ones. I understand Google has not rolled out the pigeon on all data centers but why? Will Google eventually roll out the update to old maps? Since Google is adding businesses to old google maps then what's the point of even adding new listings?

How can I get Google to forget an https version of one page on my site?
Google mysteriously decided to index the broken, https version of one page on my company's site (we have a cert for the site, but this page is not designed to be served over https and the CSS doesn't load). The page already has many incoming links to the http version, and it has a canonical URL with http. I resubmitted it on http with webmaster tools. Is there anything else I could do?

Authority site drastic ranking drop after google https switch. Please Help!
Hi Mozers. Since Google switched to the https version, our company website (http://we.register.it) indexing switched to the https version (https://www.register.it). After that the ranking on Google dropped for almost every keyword. The site is very old and got a great authority and PR 7. It ranked for same keywords for very long time On each page from years there is the correct meta rel canonical. No spam, and WMT is ok. Could you please help? The internal links are all in http, and in https. If you are https are in https (they are all relatives) No changes have been made and the subdomain is in that way from 8 years: the main url has always been http://we.register.it Google started this indexing switch around the 15 October

Need joomla help. site rankings dropped since upgrade
Hi, really having problems here with www.in2town.co.uk our site was always in the top ten for a large number of important keywords and since our upgrade from joomla 1.5 a month ago to joomla 3.0 we have vanished out of a lot of the search engines for important keywords I am concerned that we could be doing something wrong. two of our important keywords is lifestyle magazine and also gastric band hypnotherapy, but we are nowhere to be seen for these keywords. I must be doing something wrong. The site is an old site, we have been around for many years and have always ranked well up until now. We use K2 and i am just wondering if we have set up things wrong. for example under this article it comes under the category of trip advisor http://www.in2town.co.uk/trip-advisor/t ... -term-stay now when you delete the article name and just keep the trip advisor you get a list of the articles and i am wondering if this is damaging my site. http://www.in2town.co.uk/trip-advisor any help in helping me to understand why my site has dropped in rankings would be great.

Time on site
From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office. You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search. So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?
