Site (Subdomain) Removal from Webmaster Tools
-
We have two subdomains that have been verified in Google Webmaster Tools. These subdomains were used by 3rd parties which we no longer have an affiliation with (the subdomains no longer serve a purpose).
We have been receiving an error message from Google: "Googlebot can't access your site. Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 1 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 100.00%". I originally investigated using Webmaster Tools' URL Removal Tool to remove the subdomain, but there are no indexed pages. Is this a case of simply 'deleting' the site from the Manage Site tab in the Webmaster Tools interface?

If the site has been already removed by Google then you're fine but i would still put a robots.txt block on it, since you don't know who turned it off. They probably pointed it away from your subdomain in their domain registrar account, which means they could repoint it again anytime if they wanted and the site would resolve again and get indexed again.

Hi Cary
From what you say it suggests to me the subdomains have gone / dead / been removed.
Therefore you only need to remove it from WMT and ensure only the correct people have access to your WMT / GA etc as I outlined above.
All the best

Hi nigel555,
I was thinking along these lines, but I was concerned it was too simplistic of an approach. I was sure I was missing something.
How do you feel about the approach outlined above by Irving?
-
Thanks for the help Irving.
So you think we should block the subdomains with robots.txt files and then use the URL removal tool to remove the "sites" from Google's index.
I have done a site: search looking for indexed URLs from the subdomains, but the searches were empty. Do you think I should still use the URL removal tool?
-
Hi Cary, you are getting that message as the subdomain cannot be reached by Google.
On the Google Webmaster 'Home page' click the dropdown on the right - there should be 3 options.
First click 'Add or remove users' to ensure and deal with users you no longer want.
Then click 'Delete site' to remove the subdomain (make sure you delete the right one!)
Other things you may want to consider:
Check your main site has the right users accessing it.
Did you have Google Analytics on the subdomians - that data will still be there. You may want to consider who has access to that in future.
Check if the affiliates had any access to email, documents, regular reports or other tool you may want to lock down on.
All the best

it sounds like they are no longer resolving? since they are subdomains to your site i would block them with robots.txt (making sure you don't accidentally block your main site) and request removal in WMT and get them both completely deindexed.
I would keep them verified in WMT so that you can see there is nothing being done with them by a third party, because you are responsible for your subdomain content since it's technically under your control.

Trying to mark as fixed multiple errors on webmaster tools
We have 44,249 errors and I have set up for most of the URLs a 301 redirect. I know exactly which links are correctly redirected my problem is I don't want to mark as fixed each one individually. Is there a way to upload a URL list to webmaster tools and it automatically marks as fixed based on the list.

Bulk URL Removal in Webmaster Tools
One of Wordpress sites was hacked (for about 10 hours), and Google picked up 4000+ urls in the index. The site is fixed, but I'm stuck with all those urls in the index. All the urls of of the form: walkerorthodontics.com/index.php?online-payday-cash-loan.htmloncewe The only bulk removal option I could find was to remove an entire folder, but I can't do that, as it would only leave the homepage and kill off everything else. For some crazy reason, the removal tools doesn't support wildcards, so that obvious solution is right out. So, how do it get rid of 4000 results? And no, waiting around for them to 404 out of the index isn't an option.

Site hacked in Jan. Redeveloped new site. Still not ranking. Should we change domain?
Our top ranking site in the UK was hacked at the end of 2014. http://www.ultimatefloorsanding.co.uk/ The site was the subject of a manual spam action from Google. After several unsuccessful attempts to clean it up, using Securi.net and reinstating old versions of the site, changing passwords etc. we took the decision to redevelop the site. We also changed hosting provider as we had received absolutely no support from them whatsoever in resolving the issue. So far we have: Removed the old website files off the server Developed a new website having implemented 301's for all the old URL's (except the spam ones) Submitted a reconsideration request for the manual spam action, which was accepted. Disavowed all the spammy inbound links through Webmaster Tools Implemented custom URL parameters through Google to not index the SPAM URLs ( which were using parameters) Our organic traffic is down by 63% compared to last year, and we are not ranking for most of our target keywords any longer. Is there anything that I am missing in the actions I have taken so far? We were advised that at this stage changing domain and starting again might be the way to go. However the current domain has been used by us since 2007, so it would be a big call. Any advice is appreciated, thanks. Sue - http://www.ultimatefloorsanding.co.uk/

2 sites versus a subdomain: Which is better?
I have a client that sponsors a couple of events during the year. They currently have pages within a single website for these events but are interested in creating a separate website so they can brand the events differently. I'm not sure this is the most effective way to do it for fear of losing the "google juice" already there for these pages. Here's what I'm thinking is a better strategy: 1) Host the content both on the main domain and the sub-domain2) Make sure there is a tag on each page of the sub-domain version that points to the main version. That will give them the branding they are seeking while pushing all juice across to the main domain. What are your thoughts?

Will sitemap generated in Yoast for a combined wordpress/magento site map entire site ?
Hi For an ecommerce site thats been developed via a combination of wordpress and magento and has yoast installed, will the sitemap (& other yoast features) map (& apply to) the entire site or just wordpress aspects ? In other words does one need to do anything else to have a full sitemap for a combined magento/wordpress site or will Yoast cover it all ? This link seems to suggest should be fine but seeing if anyone else encountered this and had problems or if straightforward ? http://fishpig.co.uk/wordpress-integration/docs/plugins.html cheers dan

Difference between SEOMOZ and Webmaster Tools information
Hello, There is an issue that confuses me and I thought perhaps you will be able to help me shed some light on it. I have a website which shows 2,549 crawled pages on SEOMOZ and 24,542 pages on webmaster tools! Obviously there is some technical issue with the site, but my question is: why the vast difference between what the SEOMOZ crawl report and webmaster tools report show? Thanks! Guy Cizner

Will removing the main nav from the homepage penalize the site?
I have a client who offers residential and commercial services. We are dividing up the site into two sections that distinguish between these services and the clients. On the homepage, we ask site visitors to first choose from the Commercial or Residential services. I don't want to have any main navigation options on the homepage because they will change depending on whether you select the commercial option or the residential. Will this hurt the site in terms of SEO? Are there any suggestions of how to structure the home nav so it is not confusing to the visitor, but won't hurt the optimization of the site? Thank you.

.CA site same as .com site - are both necessary?
Dear Friend, We representa a major national brand in the auto care industry, and they have locations in both US and Canada. There is a primary content site at .com that we have duplicated at .ca. We are hosting the .ca site on a separate IP on a server in Canada - but by in large it is the same site. (there are some minor changes we made to change US English to Canadian English - though minor. When we search Google.ca we generally see strong search results for the .com site, but rarely, if ever any evidence of rankings for the .ca site. The .com site was launched several years ago about 18 months before the .ca site. Why doesn't Google.ca show the .ca site? Is this an issue of duplicate content, and Google.ca simply shows the .com version which it knew about first? Are we wasting our time, money and efforts having both? Thanks, Tim ps. this isn't about location. We use a separate site to locate local shops, and have coordinated that well with Google Places, and when looking for local auto care - we do well in both US and Canada. The sites described above are largetl content sites.
