Is Google applying some customized search results, even when Private Browsing?
-
I am including a screenshot of a very interesting search result I received while InPrivate Browsing in Google using IE9. I was spot-checking some keywords while private browsing and the first one I searched was "presonus studiolive." Then, I searched a completely unrelated term "communion supplies." I am attaching a screenshot of the search results page I then received from Google.
Interesting, no?
I can't even begin to wrap my head around the implications of a search results page that mixes results from two completel unrelated terms.
Thoughts?

I can sometimes search for something like "georgia" and then search for "guitars" and the first SERP will include a couple music stores in Georgia.
And, if I look at the URL in the address window I can see that both "georgia" and "guitars" are present. Google sometimes remembers prior queries and uses them to skew your next search.

Well, if you look at it from Google's perspective, their goal is to present the most relevant results for the user. If Google only returns results on a query by query basis, they have only a limited set of data (your location + the words you typed in) to figure out what would be most relevant to you. But if they look at your search history, they might be able to better determine the intent of your search.
In this case, it looks like Goolge saw that you searched for "presonus studiolive", then on your next search for "communion supplies" it returned a result for a merchant that sells both communion supplies and presonus products, thinking it might be more relevant to you.

Yes, I was aware of the geography "personalization" I just hadn't ever seen a mashed up search result based on my browser history before. I know language is definitely a factor.
What is the value to the end-user in seeing a search results page mixing two unrelated terms? [That's a purely rhetorical question]
Thoughts?
I think this is another indication that we as SEOs [and our clients] can't get bogged down by the rankings of specific keywords. That measurement of SEO success can no longer be tied to the performance of a handful of specific ["vanity"] keywords.

Google will still personalize your results based on geography, browser history, and other factors, even if you are browsing in private mode and signed out of your Google account.

Google Search Console "Change of Address" - Failed Redirection Test
I have a client who has a lot of domain variations, which have all been set up in Google Search Console. I requested that the client use the COA feature in GSC for the domains that are now redirecting to other domains that they own (which are set up in GSC). The problem is that we're not redirecting the homepages to the homepages of the destination domains. So, GSC is giving us this error message: fails redirection test: The old site redirects to www.domain.com/blog, which does not correspond to the new site you chose. Is our only way to use GSC COA for these domains to change the homepage redirect to go to the homepage of the destination domain? We don't really want that since the domain we're redirecting is a "blog.domain1.com" subdomain and we want to redirect it to "domain2.com/blog". Any help appreciated! Thanks,

To index or de-index internal search results pages?
Hi there. My client uses a CMS/E-Commerce platform that is automatically set up to index every single internal search results page on search engines. This was supposedly built as an "SEO Friendly" feature in the sense that it creates hundreds of new indexed pages to send to search engines that reflect various terminology used by existing visitors of the site. In many cases, these pages have proven to outperform our optimized static pages, but there are multiple issues with them: The CMS does not allow us to add any static content to these pages, including titles, headers, metas, or copy on the page The query typed in by the site visitor always becomes part of the Title tag / Meta description on Google. If the customer's internal search query contains any less than ideal terminology that we wouldn't want other users to see, their phrasing is out there for the whole world to see, causing lots and lots of ugly terminology floating around on Google that we can't affect. I am scared to do a blanket de-indexation of all /search/ results pages because we would lose the majority of our rankings and traffic in the short term, while trying to improve the ranks of our optimized static pages. The ideal is to really move up our static pages in Google's index, and when their performance is strong enough, to de-index all of the internal search results pages - but for some reason Google keeps choosing the internal search results page as the "better" page to rank for our targeted keywords. Can anyone advise? Has anyone been in a similar situation? Thanks!

Please, help me to understand these Google results
Hello here, I am eager to know your thoughts on this. If I search on Google for "fur elise violin sheet music", we are on the second page for our sheet music title of "Fur Elise for violin and piano" (look for "virtualsheetmusic.com"). Ok, that's not very good and I still have an hard time to figure out why there are many crappy and NOT really related websites listed before us, but here is the best (weird) part... .... search now for "fur elise violin and piano sheet music" which should narrow the query further down and so increase the chances for us to get on the first page results... and in fact we are on the first page with that query, but for a different page and a different music for a different instrument! If you scroll the first page of the results, you will find our site at the end of the 1st page for our version of "Fur Elise" for "viola and piano" and not for "violin and piano"... What the heck!??! Why's that??? Doesn't make any sense too me... why if the user search for "fur elise violin and piano" Google shows "Fur Elise for viola and piano"???!! I would really appreciate any thoughts on all this. Thank you in advance!

What to do when Demoted Sitelinks appear on search results under my main link?
Hello all, I had some links that i didn't want them to appear under search results (under my main domain) . Using websmaster 'sitelinks' i demoted those links and it has been almost a month and i can see those unwanted links on SERPS. Those pages don't even have high traffic, I am not quite sure why even they appear on Google. Is there anything else i can do to remove them under main domain search results. Thanks Seda
