Finding Broken Back Links
-
Hello there
I am new here but really want to mend my broken website by myself as I enjoy a challenge!
I used to have great rankings but have moved websites a few times (same domain) and the last move was to wordpress. I now have loads of broken links in the SERPS and wondered if there was an easy way to flush google of them as they are getting lots of 404 errors? They really are too many to do a 301 on (I have done the main pages)
Also how do I do a crawl of my website for any internal broken links? Does SEOmoz have something or is there an external program you would recommend?
Thanks
Victoria

I would second the Screaming Frog tool, just used that yesterday and it's great! Might even buy a licence for it now. The free versions great though.

As far as i'm aware google doesn't have a maximum amount of 301's for a website, or, it won't penalise you for having too many. Make sure you keep an up to date sitemap submitted to google. I use Yoast SEO for that
Broken Link Checker is a good plugin to manage broken links from within your site. You can manage them all from a dashboard within wordpress so you don't have to visit each page individually.
Hope that helps.

Hi Victoria
Seeing as you're now on Wordpress, there's a couple of plugins you may find useful.
First is Link Juice Keeper - this will redirect any 404s that are caused by any external sites linking to you. The links are redirected to the root domain to ensure any strength is passed.
Another is Broken Link Checker - as you may have guessed, this will notify you if you have any internal broken links.
Link Juice Keeper might sound appealing, but I don't think you can redirect certain pages to specific locations, I think it all just goes to the root domain (but I could be wrong).
Screaming Frog is another great tool that would let you find broken links.
Hope these help

Link juice and 301 redirects
Hi, I have a page with a lot of links going to it. I want to change the name of the page (thereby changing the URL). I can do a 301 redirect, but does a 301 send the "link juice" to the new page? The page in question is www.aerlawgroup.com/dui.html, and I want to change it to www.aerlawgroup.com/dui-lawyer.html. Thank you in advance for your time.

No crawl code for pages of helpful links vs. no follow code on each link?
Our college website has many "owners" who want pages of "helpful links" resulting in a large number of outbound links. If we add code to the pages to prevent them from being crawled, will that be just as effective as making every individual link no follow?

How to defend against link cloaking
Hi, I own a website where recently a lot of backlinks have been going to my old domain that 301's to my new domain. During the past 2 months I have noticed a massive amount of links pointing to my old domain. When I go to look at the links and go to the page all I see is a search bar which to me this seems like link cloaking. I am not sure what I should do. Obviously I am not doing the link building and someone is targeting anchor specific keywords from multiple domains that all look the same. My question is should I report it myself in google webmaster tools before I get hit with a filter or penalty, or would this force them to penalize me. And if I do get caught up in a penalty I would not know how to fix this since I doubt the webmaster is linking to me out of the kindness of his heart. Any advice? Thanks

Image Link
If I have an image that is well optimiswed for a keyword that the page it is on is ranking for but i put a no follow in the image link - is this going to lose the value of the image on that page. A strange question i know but this image i have on my homepage is optimised around a keyword, the image is also a link but when i changed the link in the image to no follow i seem to have dropped rankings for that keyword. Probably consicidence but i thought i would throw this question out there and get some views?

Weird links in OSE, wondering if NSEO ?
I was looking through our links since the last OSE update and was surprised to found several links which I have no idead how they got there. What made me suspicious is that the anchor text is relevant, but when i'm checking the page I don't see the link anymore (or can't access it, like in the first example). Some of those links : http://www.samsung.com/global/business/telecomm/product/download/SMT-G3210_opensrc_v2.01.tbz?diskuse=1&reakce=116246&clanek_id=11555 http://www.nyse.com/sspexternal/widget/nyse_dna.gg?location1=1&id=31866&sl2=1?id=28523&ncid=12930 http://www.census.gov/housing/povmeas/pov00/povpu00.sas7bdat?acad=20&dpt=10&niv_scol=CM2&annee=2010&form_action=resultat http://www.aarp.org/espanol/estados/texas.html/privmsg.php?mode=post&u=23 http://www.census.gov/procur/www/2010dris/web-briefing/cust-satisfaction-internal-dmd.wpd?p=9836 http://www.ups.com/asia/cn/chsindex.html/board27-das-wohnzimmer/board31-die-couch/search/Environmental_health/Food_safety__illness_and_contamination.aspx http://my.so-net.net.tw/hvgo2000/web/images/03?faq&page=4392 http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/c/l/a/index.html?replyto=104201 I don't even know if those links are real since I can't access many of those pages...

External link optimization
The company I work for sells software online. We have deals learning institutes that allow their students to use our software for next to nothing. These learning institutes, which are usually quite strong domains, link to our sign in area. Nice way to get powerful links hey… or is it? There are a couple of problems with these links: They all link to a subdomain (signin.domain.com) The URLs also contain unique identifiers (so that we know which institute they are coming from). Meaning they all link to different signin URLs. (eg. signin.domain.com/qwerty, signin.domain.com/qwerta, signin.domain.com/qwerts, etc. ) So all these links aren't as effective as they could be (or at all?). In a perfect SEO world these links would all point to the start page, however, due to the fact that our start page is of a commercial set up this would run the risk of communicating the wrong idea to the institutes and their students. So… are there any extremely brilliant pro mozzers that have a savvy idea how set this up in a more SEO friendly way? Thanks in advance!

Should I have a 'more' button for links?
I have a website that has a page for each town. rather than listing all the towns with a link to each, I want to show only the most popular towns and have a 'more' button that shows all of them when you click it. I know that the search engine can always see the full list of links and even though the visitor can't this doesn't go against Google guidelines because there is no deception involved, the more button is quite clear. However, my colleague is concerned that this is 'making life hard' for the search engines and so the pages are less likely to be indexed. I disagree. Is he right to worry about this??
