Why Does This Website Rank?
-
Hi,
I was looking over some mobile phone deals today and after search for Blackberry Torch Deals in Google UK I came across this site - http://www.phoneslimited.co.uk/Blackberry/9800+Torch.html
When I hit the page I was amazed it was ranking #1 because it literally just lists affiliate link after affiliate link.
The page has next to no unique content and keyword density is non existent.
In fact, the whole on page seo is just whack.
So why does it rank so well? The site seems to rank well for a variety of similar keywords?
I think we could learn a lot breaking it down

There are a lot of different reasons why they chose this way to place the blog (software, hosting-limits, easiest out-of-the-box setup, etc..) It does not do too much "damage" though. Having a sub-folder is the best-practise but using sub-domain is the second best. It would be "harmful" if they used another domain, which is not the case.
-
Just looking at this again.
They have their blog setup at http://blog.phoneslimited.co.uk instead of phoneslimited.co.uk/blog.
Why would they do that? It seems the blog posts do a lot of internal linking for the main site but i thought this was discouraged?
-
A lot of those links are internal, but theres still quite a lot coming from article diredctories and press release sites.
I was just amazed to see a site like that surviving panda when its just reams of ads.
-
Ya, the back-links are a little excessive, wonder who they are really competing against. Without spending time on it I'm betting there is another competitor that is also doing a massive back-linking campaign.
As Cyle stated, look at the different tools SEOmoz offers to do a full analysis of it if you plan to compete.
-
Yeah not counting the links to the domain, the page alone has many from articles, PR sites, and they've done social media stuff for it as ping.fm is in the list. Again that's link building having been done for the individual product page, then of course you get all the backlinks to the domain itself, i.e. the homepage which passes link juice internally.
The question should be more like, why wouldn't they rank?!
-
Being able to do a competitive analysis is absolutely crucial for a SEO, so with that said I rather point you in the right direction and let you dig into it than just give you some answers. Post back what you find and we will give you feedback on your findings.
When doing a competitive analysis you want to look at two things off page SEO and on page SEO you will want to know all the big ranking factors for them both. I personally like to start with analyzing off page first because in my experience this is the biggest contributor to high rankings. Use SEOmoz's keyword difficulty tool to analyze the results for the phrase and start digging into it. Here is a link to the keyword difficulty tool with your search phrase in it. I know this is probably not the answer you want, but I feel like this will benefit you more in the long run than just a quick answer.

Because of the 5,937 incoming links compared to the 6 the next highest link has.

How to manage/divide growth in traffic and conversions on both our website and our listing AppStores
Our product is an b2b webapp. How can we balance the marketing/link building and traffic to 2 main assets: our website and the app listing pages in partner sites like Shopify/Bigcommerce/3dcart?

Advise about Social Sharing between two loosely affiliated website - (retweets/fb cross sharing)
So basically, I have two websites. One being my Primary website and another which is very Niche/Seasonal. Now the Niche website received a penalty, and was later re-included however google traffic has been extremely limited since being reindexed. (bing never had a problem, still top ranked) I don't directly link back and forth between the two websites because its not worth hurting my primary websites ranking. I'm sure google knows I own both anyway, as they are on the same webmaster tools but the Niche site was kicked for spammy link building & its been an endless process removing them all. Anyway, with that being my concern. Would it be acceptable to cross share facebook posts, retweet and do things like that on occasion? My primary reason for asking is because the Niche website has a very large social following, so I would like to share post/tweets from my Primary site when its relevant and vice versa. Appreciate any suggestions/comments. Thanks!

Merchant´s data feed for affiliates is the same content as their own website...
Hi Some advice appreciated. Started working on a site and found out that they are giving their unique content to their affiliates (an XML feed so appearing on another domain). In this case, if they want to provide the data like that, how can we protect ourselves? Should we use author tags in our html, is that necessary? Is there any fix other than "stop doing that and give them different content"? Thanks

Best way to start affiliate marketing a new mens magazine website?
I have just started up a new mens magazine website featuring articles, videos, sports news and photos to help drive traffic to the website. I write all the articles myself and do the social media updates in my spare time. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to start doing affiliate marketing for a new website? I was inspired to do this by successful internet marketers who make a passive income off their websites. So far I have added Amazon and William Hill as affiliate links as I think my target market will be looking for these types of product links. Also, for anyone who has experience in this, how long it taken for your blog to become successful and make money? Many thanks, Alex

My new site experienced a sudden drop in Google rankings
We launched a new affiliate site at the beginning of April this year dealing in reviews, vouchers and price comparison for a niche product. We had a pretty good start, with some of our target keywords ranking #8 #10 #7 but this week they have suddenly dropped off dramatically - like 36 or 42 places. We haven't made any changes to the site apart from publishing new content pieces, such as news posts and reviews - does anyone know why this would suddenly happen? Thanks
