Best Practices for having Social Profiles indexed
-
There has been a lot of talk lately around social profiles potentially improving your brand as well as search.
What I'd like to know is the best practices for getting those social profiles crawled and indexed so they actually provide a good link to my site.
I'm also wondering what the difference between what Linkscape sees and what Google sees and when I'm looking at Open Site Explorer's rankings on one of those social profiles how can I be sure that Google sees it the same way.
I ask this because a lot of these profiles are not well internally linked to. An example is about.me, it's a potentially great link, but it's essentially an island, and even after dropping a couple Twitter links to my profile, Open Site Explorer shows and Page Authority of 1, and it's not even indexed with Google.
What I did last night was put a link to my about.me, flickr and wedding wire in my Connect menu drop down on my site to get that crawled hopefully soon.
Are there other methods of getting those crawled and indexed so it starts passing some juice?
What do you guys do? -
A quick side-question, I have an about me page: http://about.me/ioansaid
Looks nice enough and all that and I guess it's quite friendly and less commercial looking of a link than my company link which is what I have in my twitter profile.
Twitter has much higher authority and all that than About.me as you pointed it out so I thought that having my http://celynnenphotography.co.uk link there would be more beneficial than my about.me page. But perhaps the About.me would generate more clicks? I don't know..
Purely for SEO purposes, am I right in leaving my company's link there or perhaps should I put my About me and hope for more clicks?

Agreed for sure. That is actually what I tell my clients.
And I myself follow the same practice. I'm very involved on Facebook, increasingly involved on Twitter, and do a little on Flickr.
But the About.me site is a very interesting one. There is very little method to interact with other members as of now, but do see a great opportunity to being on there. I was just wondering for sites like these if there was a better way to get them indexed.
Thanks for the response.

Trying to force a search engine into indexing a page is a losing tactic. Having been down the social media profiles path, in my opinion, (and based on our limited research) it's far better to focus your energy on a few high profile social sites (Twitter, face book, linked in) and do so from the non SEO approach. Give great information, interact, and meet interesting people and businesses. The SEO effect will follow.
Having your clients Face book comments shared is far more important than having 250 social profiles. Let's face it, if you can buy 100's of social media profiles for $5.00 how valuable can that really be?
One of our major challenges with clients is convincing them that the easy road in SEO may head up for a while, but always seems to end with a long slow and ugly decline. (a mountain road metaphor)
Go for Quality! Think like there is no Google or Bing and your SEOo will produce better and longer term results.
While I have seen temporary rating boasts with social profiles, unless the account is used as intended, and grown, those ratings disappear pretty fast.

What are the best free/low cost tools you use for SEO?
Hello! I will be giving a talk next month about free/low cost SEO tools and apps and I would like to hear what your favorite/most useful tools are. I know this question has been discussed here before, but this is a topic that is constantly evolving and I am interested in knowing what people currently find to be the best. I'd like to hear about things you really use on a regular basis--there are a lot of things out there that sound cool, but end up not being used. So, what are your go-to free SEO tools? Thank-you,

GA Profile - Change UA code
Hi I have two sites under one account in GA. The two sites have the same UA code but with different suffixes (-1 and -2). I want SEOMoz to only track the -2 site but I am unable to enter the UA code directly. Is there a way to do this, or do I need to set-up a new account in GA? Any help appreciated. Chris

How do I find out which pages are being indexed on my site and which are not?
Hi, I doing my first technical audit on my site. I am learning how to do an audit as i go and am a lost. I know some page won't be indexed but how do I: 1. Check the site for all pages, both indexed and not indexed 2. Run a report to show indexed pages only (i am presuming i can do this via screaming Frog or webmaster tool) 3. I can do a comparison between the two list and work out which pages are not being indexed. I'll then need to figure out way. I'll cross this bridge once i get to it Thanks Ben

404 : Errors in crawl report - all pages are listed with index.html on a WordPress site
Hi Mozers, I have recently submitted a website using moz, which has pulled up a second version of every page on the WordPress site as a 404 error with index.html at the end of the URL. e.g Live page URL - http://www.autostemtechnology.com/applications/civil-blasting/ Report page URL - http://www.autostemtechnology.com/applications/civil-blasting/index.html The permalink structure is set as /%postname%/ For some reason the report has listed every page with index.html at the end of the page URL. I have tried a number of redirects in the .htaccess file but doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions will be strongly appreciated. Thanks

Site Not Indexing & SEOMoz Reporting ZERO On-Page Report Crawls
Any help on this would be MUCH appreciated. One of my sites, aironeairsolutionsinc.com, has recently been rebuilt and the pages tweaked for some basic optimization. Based on my experience, those tweaks (geared toward keywords with relatively low competition locally) usually bump my local sites up into the top 20 or 30 at worst. 3 weeks later, it seems my site is still not indexing with Google. In addition, I AM NOTICING THAT THE ON PAGE REPORTS IN SEO MOZ ARE NOT REGISTERING THAT ANY PAGES ARE BEING CRAWLED. Again, any help from Moz staff would be awesome! :} Thanks, Ricky

Best Online Branding Strategies?
Hi all, The CEO of my company wants me to start branding the company, basically from the ground up. I've been doing a bunch of reading on how to properly do this and only got so far as to be reiterated the same exact jargon everywhere I go: -"Put your logo everywhere" -"Have a clear company motto" -"Use branded keywords in backlinks" -"Include your logo and social links in company-wide email signatures" -"Make sure your brochures match your website, etc. etc. etc." I've not yet seen something I feel is worthy to report back to big boss as far as an good SEO strategy that is impressively branding central. Can anyone refer me to some GREAT articles with a to b instructions on exactly how to implement these branding strategies? The more creative the better. I'd be forever appreciative! Derek
